So how does Akron come in to Nothwestern's building having never seen the 1-3-1 zone trap that the Cats use and handle it with relative ease? They did lose in the last second, but Cats had so much home cooking it was sickening. By the way, the Gophers have had an ongoing problem with the 1-3-1 since Tubby has been here. Is it coaching?. The players don't comprehend? The type of players we have? Again, just asking?

I agree that we've had struggles with the 1-3-1, but the Gophers did handle it much better in Indianapolis, yes? My recollection is we forced the Wildcats out of the 1-3-1 once we got a couple easy buckets and made a few shots from the perimeter.

+1 Why do some folks focus on the one loss, when we beat them twice??

Ruppert, do you actually watch the games or just remember all the negative things people say on here after losses?

Tubby is 8-5 against Northwestern.

Possibly because beating NW is the expectation...as savagerube says we are only 8-5 against NW under Tubby. Improving on 8-5 records against the likes of Northwestern are what is going to be needed to elevate the team next year and beyond. The question as to why we haven't been better is a great one and one the staff is ultimately going to have to find a solution for.

Well, 9-5 (Tubby's actual record vs. NU, but let's not let facts get in our way) is significantly better than the 6-7 mark we had vs. NU from the 1999-2000 through 2006-07 seasons, which at one time included 6 straight Ls to the Wildcats. Not to mention, the Northwestern program is a lot more competitive in the B1G now than it was then. How soon we forget.

I'm much more concerned about Tubby's nonconference home schedules & his record in B1G home games than I am with his record vs. Northwestern.

Again we hired a coach that was to be far beyond Dan Monson, being better against NW is one of many keys. The thread wasn't titled "8-5 Record Against NW the Biggest and Only Concern".

You're right. I forgot to add in the tournament win from just a few days ago. Duh. I agree with your statement though. 9-5 is pretty darn good considering the Monson years.

No harm, no foul. I figured you might have missed a win in there somewhere.

This is one of the many examples of Tubby being "far beyond" Monson. 6-7 vs. 9-5. What is the concern of the thread?

Who determined Tubby should be "far beyond" Monson? For that matter, what is considered "far beyond" Monson?

haha, if I had to venture a guess somewhere north of .437 (B1G) in Dan Monson's last 5 years. Tubby's first 5 years are .437 (B1G).

I didn't see a lot of "home cooking'" but I did see an atrocious call on the intentionally missed FT with 5 seconds left. Take your pick, the push by the Zips or the obvious tap out of bounce by those same players. They surged in and clearly hit the ball out of bounds which could have been a game changer.

I must say, I wondered what ridiculous question was going to be posed in the OP and I was not disappointed once I clicked on the link to find out.

What would be your strategy to improve against the 1-3-1, which is the question posed in this thread? Let's stay on topic...

That wasn't at all the topic stated in the OP. Ruppert set out a topic about Tubby not being able to gameplan against the 1-3-1, not asking how to improve Tubby's existing strategy against the 1-3-1.

I guess he needed to spell it out, he must view 9-6 as unacceptable. If you find it acceptable state that and move on.

Watched the Northwestern/Akron game and Northwestern didn't use the 1-3-1 very much at all in the 1st half and I don't know that Akron didn't have problems with it, they didn't seem to comfortable in some of their offensive sets and had to scrambel a bit.

You're quite the mind reader, President Kaler. Thanks for setting us straight on how we all should interpret something the same way. And it's 9-5, not 9-6.

You're welcome, this board has some serious issues. If anyone remotely questions the coach there is an army of about 15 people who jump into attack mode and act like they are Donna Smith. On a whole this board is fairly even handed with the current regime but crap gets bogged down when the thought police feel threatened by even the slightest insinuation that Tubby Smith's hasn't met expectations.

This board is full of Tubby apologists. Attack dogs ready to pounce on the next Tubby critic. That's why there aren't many here. Who needs the anger?

Sorry when someone isn't being factual with his/her criticism I feel the need to point it out. But next time I'll ignore the facts for you.

it's hilarious is what it is.

And a few @ssholes that would criticize Tubby if he cured cancer.

By the way, Wolters sucks.

I am sure Wolters wishes he could be you. As far as Tubby goes. Curing cancer has nothing to do with coaching basketball. If he cures cancer I' susre the U of M will hire him for the medical school. Until then, I'll focus on his basketball Big Ten record. Now that is something that sucks.

You're first comment was 100% pejorative, it really set the stage for a good argument based on facts/data

I actually don't see one post in this thread from you with a single fact...
