I’m updating the “Field of 76” projection every first of the month until a final Oct. 31 preseason projection. The season starts Nov. 1 with a game in Rome (Notre Dame vs. Villanova).

Minnesota and St. Thomas are among those back in the field (for now), with the Gophers slotting as one of the "last 4 in" and the Tommies projecting as a #15 seed and the last automatic qualifier avoiding the Tuesday-Wednesday Opening Round. Marquette, Virginia Tech, and Doug Gottlieb's Green Bay squad are among newbies to the field.

There remain 10 conferences garnering multiple bids, but the American (adds South Florida) has replaced the WCC, which now includes only Santa Clara after Saint Mary's drops out. Also new to the projection is Virginia replacing Illinois in the Final Four to join mainstays Michigan State, Florida, and Texas.

An * denotes the automatic qualifier in a multiple-bid conference. Teams' place in the field (1 through 76) is determined by current Torvik (T-Rank) rankings.
