Judd Zulgad column: Coach's patience wears thin with Ralph Sampson III's approach

Your presuming hustle is not something inherent, just like jumping. How come everyone who is 6'7" does not rebound like Dennis Rodman? It should be easy. Ralph should be used in a way to take advantage of what he does have.

Hustling is not something inherent. It is a decision players make. It hurts more to expend all of your energy and get banged up. Some players (Trevor) are willing to do that to themselves to help the team, Ralph has not shown that willingness.

Rodney Williams is 6'7''...he also leads our team in rebounds...he tries harder than Sampson. Hustle is the great equalizer in sports, that is the only explanation for Wisconsin basketball under Bo Ryan.

Physical play recipe:

-Begin preparation 3 years prior to serving
-Start with two parts strength
-Add two parts desire
-Add one part guts- use "Miles Tarver Extra Lean" brand
-Mix thoroughly

The Miles Tarver rule: Never dribble. Never shoot anything you didn't rebound first. Also known as: The J'son Stamper rule.

Ralph is a good player but he's not a banger. He can play better in the middle when teams use a zone. He's a pretty good passer, can hit the jumper but Tubby is right.. sometimes he should just take it to the basket and get to the free throw line where is sure to hit them both. In the real up and down games though you should go 4 guards with Rodney.

Tubby wants him to start lifting weights???? Now?
Baffling isn't it? Reminds me of his comment after the 2nd(?) Michigan game last year suggesting Blake should initiate more contact when shooting. Perhaps not untrue, but again, untimely.

Ralph is physically stronger than he was as a freshman. I am sure he's lifting weights. But if you have the demeanor of a mouse no amount of weight lifting willl fix it.

I am beginning to wonder if someone had to promise someone's dad a starters spot unless injured to get him to commit here. Eliason has outplayed him a handfull of times now.

You are a fool if you think Eliason outplayed Ralph last night. Eliason gave up multiple second chance rebounds last night and was continually scored on underneath. You're the same fool that thought Iverson was better than Ralph. Put down your hater-ade chump. Meanwhile , Ralph recorded his 191st block last evening to tie DJ for third on the all time list.

Wow, I used to try very hard to look the other way when it came to Ralph. However, the Iowa game was the last straw for me. I have NEVER.... and I mean NEVER seen such a lack of effort from a senior Division 1 athelete in my life. If Ralph shows any sign of interest in that game the Gophs win going away. Pathetic. Also, consider me a fool then. I'd take Eliason, in a heartbeat over Sampson any day of the week. Ever wonder why Iverson left? Gee, try sitting on the bench behind a guy that doesn't seem interested in being there.

terrible take

Stamper can dribble and shot a jumper... not sure where you got that.

All these bad things you say about EE you can say about Ralph too. Who *&^!#*&^!#*&^!#*&^!#ing cares if he blocks more shots, EE forces more misses. Besides, blocks don't mean *&^!#*&^!#*&^!#*&^!# if the other team gets the ball back. Zeller destroyed Sampson, only got 6 points on EE by making some of the most ridiculous shots I've ever seen. If I needed a post defender, EE would be the guy on this team I'd go with.

Please review the tape and box sscore from last night before any further comments. Blocks , rebounds and poiints are recorded because they are important and are a quantitative way to determine one's impact on the game. Zeller scored three baskets on Ralph and one was a break away as a result of poor floor balance. I love the way you make things up and rely on subjectivity to prove your point.

He made 3 on Ralph, 3 on EE and the fast break; I kept track. The difference is, Ralph didn't make it difficult.
Also, in 20 minutes against PSU EE had 4 points, 6 rebounds, and 1 block. In 20 minutes Ralph had 4 points, 5 rebounds, 3 assists, and 5 blocks. Ralph's only got the edge in blocks and assists, the blocks not being THAT big cause we never got the ball of them. I still say, despite not having as many blocks, it was clear EE was altering more shots. I know people in the game chat agreed with me when I said that so I'm not the only one that thinks this. Ralph also gives up second chance rebounds, stop being subjective acting like he doesn't. He gets out-muscled by some guards on the boards.

Name me one senior on a good division 1 team who doesnt get benched to send a message to him, when he is not playing hard. I watch a lot of basketball. I've seen Izo do it. I have seen Bo Ryan do it. I've seen coach K do it. It doesn't mean the bench player is better its a "motivation move".

Coach K did a full line sub (tubby style) against Clemson too. It wasn't because the 5 bench players were better, his starters needed some motivation.
