Are Tillman and Thornton definitely coming to Minnesota? Are they the only jucos?

They signed LOI so unless they do not qualify they will be here.

Christyn Lewis is a JuCo who is already here as well.

Raymond Cottman is another JuCo who committed, but I don't think he signed yet. Not sure what that means.

I thought he was qualified out of high school, but went to JC to raise his stock. If he qualified out of high school, he doesn't have to complete AA degree.

This thread (previously linked on GopherHole) will help to elucidate the situation for you.

Both Tillman and Thornton were sent home because apparently they took classes before Lackawanna... They only lasted one day in Minnesota... I feel bad for them.

Well that absolutely blows! Can you explain the situation a little more? Did their previous schoolwork throw off their gpas or whatever?

Thanks

What? Took classes where?

Apparently, you have 5 years of college to play 4 years. I heard about it from a third party who knows someone on the team. I think they only have one more year left each of football. Maybe i'm a little wrong about the details but i'm 100% sure they both were sent home a day after they arrived.

Considering the DB depth right now I wouldn't be against having them be one and done guys. At this late juncture, what else would we use the schollies for anyway?

Well that makes sense. I wish they would have caught this during the recruiting process, but at least they caught it.

Among brewster's many weaknesses as a head coach, the notion of going through the process of conducting a thorough 'vetting' of his recruiting targets would appear to be an area for improvement

But brewster does love recruiting

Aside from these two guys (assuming this news is true), please list other cases in which Brewster's "vetting" was insufficient.

(Simply listing the names of players who did not qualify doesn't count, since in most cases Brewster is fully aware that they were borderline, and that's the only reason other schools backed off. In those cases, please include proof that Brewster was surprised that they did not qualify.)

they're still on the roster. i suspect they'll be suiting up in the fall.

Something tells me the online roster is not the first thing to get updated in these situations, especially in the off season. It neither proves nor disproves anything...its all rumor until a press release comes out.

Not too often that I can flex some nerdom :).

per Monter:

Herschel Thornton, a safety and Dwight Tillman, a cornerback, both from Lackawanna (PA) CC, will not be part of the Minnesota football team this fall, The two junior college transfers signed with the Gophers in February and planned to enroll this summer with the hopes of earning a starting spots this fall. GoldenSports.Net caught up with Thornton to learn about the latest on his situation.

Herschel Thornton and Dwight Tillman helped lead Lackawanna to a 5-4 mark last season. They were expected to play with former college teammate Jeff Wills, who started at right tackle and tight end Tiree Eure, who inked with the Gophers in December.

Thornton was on campus Saturday, but received word Monday that he and Tillman will not be part of the Minnesota football team this season and the two left the school.

Thornton said that the two will not be able to become eligible at Minnesota or any Division I school.

“We can’t. We are ineligible. We have to go Division II.”

Thornton and Tillman had both told GoldenSports.Net during the spring game that they were looking forward to arriving at Minnesota and competing for playing time. He said that the news of his ineligibility caught him off-guard.

“Basically, it was totally out of the blue.”

Thornton said that he took classes at Montgomery Community College in the fall of 2006, which started his athletic clock.

“I am pretty much talking to my junior college coach (Mark Duda) try to get him to contact some schools.”

Go Gophers!!

I hate to here that these young men lost out on their opportunities to play and attain degrees from The U and wish them the best in their future endeavors. DII opportunities should be multiple given their talent. Now, with regard to the Secondary for the Gophers, we will be fine; Royston, Watkins and Lewis are flat out, LEGIT! They will have that unit playing at a very high level this year.

It is great that The U uncovered the defect before official report times in the fall when potential violations may have ensued upon discovery.

Hate to temper the enthusiasm but its important to note that this hinges upon some assumptions that are not yet settled. Everything will be ok assuming:
1) Royston recovers quickly and is able to play at the same level following recovery
2) Theret doesn't face any major suspensions and doesn't F-up again

Man this sucks I was pumped about Thornton. He's physical as hell... and we need the depth. We can't cut a break period...in any sport.

All of a sudden I'm really happy at how good Kyle H. looked in the open scrimmage and spring game. Looks like James Manuel and others might have to contribute immediately as well. Let's hope the secondary stays healthy.
