Given Leidners overall performance this season and his last 3 games only completing 37% of his passes we have to look for someone else.

I believe his lack of ability and poor decision making limits what Limegrover can call during the games.

This staff would be stupid not to try and find a better option who can immediately contribute.

And as we all know, there are hundreds of JuCo QBs out there ready to play D-1 Football.

Open to it if there is an option, obviously a huge hole. Leidner is gutsy but we need more production.

+1

At the end of the game, when we were behind with 2+ minutes left, notice how we ran, ran, then finally tried to pass on 3rd and long. That was such bad play calling, but I realize that they have no faith in Leidner, and so instead of letting Leidner make a mistake, they would rather run the ball, (even though it also ran out the clock) than have Leidner pass the ball. What is the point of even having a QB when we limit our playbook? Line Cobb back there and just keep running.

Northern Illinois fans complained about Limegrover's conservatism in play-calling, despite the great record he and Kill had there.

I believe and always have, that Kill himself hampers the play calling.... I'm quite convinced Kill does not like the jet sweep action, at all. But to be true, you can only call so many plays your DIII level qb can run effectively..

Nephew of Jim Kelly, that is pretty cool. Let's go get him!

Should UAB fold their program, perhaps Cody Clements could be an option. With a 66.5% completion percentage, he would fit the bill of someone that could be efficient enough to make opposing defenses acknowledge the passing game.

I don't think the JUCO route is the way to go for the QB situation. Yes, there might be a kid out there who would work (by work, I mean be better than in-house options), but it's not likely. Demi Croft looks like he could be tough and perhaps can come in and challenge Mitch right away. That's really all you could ask of almost any JUCO.

While Mitch certainly struggled this year (at times he was good),consistency is what matters. I, for one, think he's going to be much better next year. As a junior, he's been through it all twice, will have more legit targets and should be fully comfortable in the offense. Another month or so of practice for the bowl game and more experience in the spring will bring out the best in Mitch. And no, I'm not wearing maroon colored glasses. I just think there's talent there that will come out.

Let's be honest here. The QB in this system needs to be a leader who can run the football, play fake, and make pretty easy passes when called upon. Do you really believe this kind of player doesn't exist at the JuCo level, or are you just being difficult?

Note that I like Leidner's toughness and passion. I would personally prefer that Leidner just improves his field vision and passing game greatly between now and the start of 2015, rather than the Gophers go the JuCo route, but I think you're being over the top here toward some of our fellow fans.

Haters. Mitch's numbers were terrible. But he won games for us. He was like Tebow for the Broncos.
And he was greatly improved as the season progressed.

I expect there to be competition for the job. And I expect Mitch will improve yet again.

Improved? Really?

That's a cute statistic. That's against 3 top25 teams ... Though NE is actually probably a Top15-caliber team. Let's just ignore the 77% 4tds 0ints in the game against Iowa before that.

In the five games leading up to and including NW, Leidner passed for 3 TDs and 7ints. So, yeah, he improved. Better #s against mostly much better opponents.

I'd be hard pressed to find a handful of high-major starters more inaccurate than Leidner. Most of his passes end up not even being reachable by our receivers. Give us a decent throwing QB, and this could be a top 15 program going forward, IMO.

I think the solution is to bring in some JUCO posters on GH.

Just look at the JUCO QB list. There are very few QBs available.

Kill also mentioned in the past that when JUCO QBs choose a school, they expect to start right away. They will not go somewhere to sit on the bench for their final 2 seasons.

I don't think there are any JUCO QBs available that are good enough to come in and start next year. It will be another year of Leidner, or if someone currently on the roster can beat him out.

What is it about Minnesota that allows people to have such low expectations?

Huh? So we don't want to be able to beat Top 25 teams consistently? Should we just be happy he can have a good game every now and then against bad teams? Awesome, he had a good game against Iowa, too bad he sh!t the bed in every other game. David Cobb ain't coming through that door next year....

And NE a top 15 caliber team? Good Lord, they aren't even a top 30 team, they are totally average.

Given your lack of knowledge of grammar and punctuation, it would be stupid to continue to post here. How many Leidners performed poorly?

The coaching staff seems to way too much in love with Leidner to even consider a Junior College QB

Agree

After two days to think more clear, I agree. Mitch has two years left. The coaching staff wants a QB that can read the defense quickly after the ball is snapped, hand it off or keep it and be a good runner. He definitely is that. We all know that passing has to be better but remember we have redshirt freshmen that Kill almost pulled there shirts this year but didn't. Yes he has to get the ball to them and I believe he will improve in that area. The game starts to slow down after many starts and with the time between now and next season to work on it.. Will he ever be a top passer, probably not, but I expect we will show acceptable improvement. Yes, we can probably find a better passer (he may already be on the team) BUT can he full-fill the running ability that ill requires in his system. Sorry for my knee-jerk reaction right after the game, Mitch.

Mitch is a winner but is not pretty doing it. We don't have a passing offense because we do not have any play makers except Williams and May. There many great quarterbacks that can't pass but their targets make them. If we had a drop back guy who had no legs this year, we would not be 8 and 4. Everyone loves a pure gunslinger but that is not always the answer. We need to keep running and establishing a dominate O line and with people that are going to play next year, give Mitch a little more time and better targets.

Lets all be honest with what the QB situation is here: Mitch was the staffs only option this year. Streveler can run but they clearly don't trust him to throw the ball at all from his one start. DRM clearly wasn't ready to play from all practice reports either. I don't know how in love they are with Mitch but it made all the sense in the world for them to talk him up all summer long and embrace him as their guy. We'll see how in love the staff is with Mitch if another QB starts showing some competency. And the other issue is the staffs QB recruiting. They recruited every QB on the roster and if they don't trust any of them to throw the ball either they need to reevaluate how they recruit QBs or how they coach them. Last in the country or even last in the conference is inexcusable regardless of how much you run the ball

He's been named a 2015 captain as a Jr.

He just lead this team to the best year in Kill's time here, including road wins at Michigan and Nebraska, and a near perfect game against Iowa.

He did so even though he played through a sprained MCL and turf toe

He also ran for 500 yards and 10 TDs this season which regardless of what some fans think, is a priority for this staff's QBs.

He lead the program in offseason conditioning and keeping teammates accountable and was so good at it that Kill described in glowing terms his leadership all last winter and spring. As a sophomore.

I really think you folks need to calm down and be patient with the passing game.

In a perfect world we'd have had depth built up at QB and WR, this simply wasn't reality for a variety of reasons, some possibly on the coaches, some definitely not. Going forward it's hard to convince myself that the coaching staff won't add talent and depth to those positions just like they have at every other position since they've been here.
Look at almost all of our transfers since Kill's arrived. They've nearly all been WRs and QBs. Barker(Baby), Shortell(Scheme fit), Moulton(Grades?), Tufts(Drugs?), Harris(Stole stuff), McDonald(Drugs), Nelson(Wanted guaranteed start), and Harbison(Homesick).
I will assume the staff put their foot down and redshirted all those WR's, and 2 QBs this year to put and end to this and develop guys who can catch and throw the ball.

By the time Mitch is a senior either they'll have things fixed and he improves like you would expect, or he could easily be a redzone changeup run threat if someone else emerges. He'll likely break the all time gopher record for career QB rushing TDs here.

Ignore the stats.

Look at what Mitch demonstrably can and cannot do.

Mitch cannot complete a pass from a three step drop--or anything at that speed.

He just can't.

Many offenses are built around this tempo, but we can't even threaten to do this.

Do you knuckleheads realize what a bonus this is to an opposing defensive coordinator? They can ignore fully 30% of the preparation they'd usually spend on a team!!

For the record, I really love Mitch and enjoy rooting for him.

Good points. My fear through all of this is that every other scholarship QB on our roster is a smaller version of Leidner.

You point out much value in Mitch as QB, Captain, and leader. This staff improves players. Recruiting will improve with success, but facilities need to get better. Future looks bright if ground is broken in spring.

Who they immediately resigned to a multi year deal to lead the team for years to come right? Right?!?!

Facilities are coming, Kill has been in design meetings. Ground will be broken in April/May.
