Not an earth-shattering post here at all. But, I stumbled across this quick-hitting feature on a former fringe Gopher target Chris Colvin, who was a 4-star PG out of Chicago Public School League a couple of years ago. I think we backed away because he was an academic risk. He ended up at Iowa State and had a falling out and went to JUCO in Florida, where he's doing well. We have a need at PG, clearly. He'd be eligible right away next year. I wonder if the staff is interested?? Should they be???

Maybe Chris Monter can add something about this kid, or maybe there's some baggage with his ISU departure that would keep us uninterested. Just thought I'd throw it out there.

Reading his reviews I am a fan ... depends on what his issues were at other schools, maybe just didn't like it? I mean, kids transfer all the time. Doesn't necessarily mean they are "bad kids". I think he is a PG we grab if he is interested. Maybe Tubby can be just the right infleunce for him?

Depends on if Tubby wants a true point guard, or would rather work more on replacing the 3 departing big men.

Question: If a JUCO were to play next year (Chris Colvin for example) how many years of eligability does he have left? Just not sure how the JUCO thing works or is it different for each player?

Per Rivals:

A physical lead guard, Colvin has the strength and quickness to get into the lane almost at will. Once inside the interior of the defense, he has the ability to finish as well as set up his shooters. Defensively, he has the tools to be a dominant defender against either guard position. Playing under control and improving the consistency of his long range shot are areas for improvement.

I am of the opinion that we "must" get a Juco point guard for next season. We can't rely on a true freshman and Mav to handle the duties.

I agree to some extent.

Andre I think will be given the PG reigns from day 1.

Possability 1)
Tubby thinks Andre can play 35 minutes per game and won't get hurt with Mav playing spot duty.

Possability 2)
Tubby thinks Mav can be a 15 minute per game player, then he can have Andre on a "shorter leash" (for lack of a better term) and have Mav as his back up

Possability 3)
Tubby doesn't want Andre playing PG for 35 minutes and doesn't want Mav getting any more minutes

If 1 or 2 are true, then there is no need to go get a PG, Juco or otherwise. You go after Walter Pritchard and get some more size and shooting

If 3 is true, then I think you need to go get a back up / starting PG. Either way, he is either starting a Juco PG or Freshman PG.

With this team and state, though, Gophers may be able to do both. Always the possability of more transfers, players getting in trouble, players going Pro, whatever could happen ... could happen.

yeah i don't think we are going to bring in another guard...mav will start the season at point, and depending how andre looks he COULD take over the starting role.

A lot of people don't seem to think Mav will improve, but I think he will be a serviceable PG. Andre will prob be a combo guard, playing some 2 guard and backing up Mav when needed.

If Mav is the starting PG next year, that will be scary.

Not a knock on Mav at all or his abilities or his improvement. But at this point, I don't see how you take a Sophmore who averaged about 5 minutes a game his freshman year and put him at starting PG.

I am sure Tubby will give him a chance at it, but just watching Andre highlights and reading about him, I don't see much of a chance of him not earning that spot.

If no other PG is brought in, it will be interesting to see how it all shapes up ...

This! No way imo we start next season with Mav & a Freshman as our only options. How do you sell that to your upperclassmen? You've got a really solid team next year IF we have a mature PG next season, without one it's a throwaway season.

Exactly. College teams don't win very often without a solid point guard. All of our hopes are being put onto a incoming frosh who isn't even a "true" point guard. No-way, no-how does Mav start next season. I'd love for him to be our third point and maybe by the time he is a senior he is getting major minutes.

If he played somewhere as a frosh and now this year as JuCo, he has 2 years left to play.

"mav" as the starting point guard = epic fail.

Ahanmisi wouldn't be the starting point guard for a good junior college team.

Agreed Chief. I try not to dump on our players, especially young players but at this point Mav doesn't look like he could compete at Howard Pulley, much less the Big-10. Like Ted, I hope Mav can hang in there (perhaps even get a red shirt next year if we bring in a Juco & they stay healthy?) & be a producer a couple-few years from now, but I think of him as a non-factor for next season. Thus, we need a Juco PG as our main man + Hollins as the back up. I have no doubt Hollins is our guy moving forward, but unless the guy's an NBA lottery pick, a Freshman PG is not the answer.

From what I've seen of him it looks like andre has enough dribbling ability to be the primary ballhandler. He's a combo guard with a huge ability to score. He's one of the top recruits we've had in years and your best players need to see the floor regardless of class. I expect him to make a big impact right away and carry primary pg duties. If he has the ability to consistently break his man down off the dribble and get close shots in the lane then he'll be able to learn how to distribute as well.

Actually Stoneridge (CA) Prep was better than most JuCo teams last years. Ahanmisi was their PG starter averaging 20 ppg and feeding many assists to Enes Kanter.

"03 February 2011 Colvin is starting to see his recruitment pick up steam. “The recruiting process at the beginning was slow because coaches really weren’t coming out to see us because we didn’t to do well last year. Now it’s picking up though with a decent amount of coaches coming through for games and practices,” said Colvin who mentions West Virginia, Butler, Iowa, South Florida, Clemson, Illinois and a few other schools as being currently in the mix." http://chicagohoops.hoops247.com/in...-palm-beach-state-college&catid=34:recruiting

The Panthers current winning streak hit 10 in a row as they defeated Indian River (89-78) on Saturday Jan 29 and Northwood JV (105-55) Monday Jan 31 in Elisabeth Erling Gym.

Against Indian River it was a tale of 2 halves as in the first half it was a half court battle that had the teams deadlocked at 32. In the second half Palm Beach pushed the pace more and sprinted out to a double digit lead they never relinquished as they completed the first half of the Southern Conference schedule at a perfect 6-0. Four players scored in double digits for the Panthers as Waverly Austin collected a career high 34 points, and Antonio Johnson, Chris Colvin and Ryan Chambers each scored 12. Austin also had 19 rebounds and Colvin added 8 assists." http://www.palmbeachstate.edu/x16464.xml

" The exodus continues from the Iowa State men’s basketball program. The Cyclones announced that freshman point guard Chris Colvin will transfer on Thursday, bringing the total of transfers this offseason to three. Colvin didn’t return phone calls or an e-mail requesting an interview.
