JUCO Forward Kevin Thomas and Palm Beach State Excelling
Gophers Have Shown Interest In Thomas

Minnesota will have playing time open up in its frontcourt after this season with the loss of three senior forwards. Palm Beach State's Kevin Thomas is an uncommitted sophomore who could potentially help in 2013-14.

For the Minnesota Golden Gophers, the loss of three seniors from their front court at the end of this season will create substantial minutes of immediate playing time that will need to be filled. While the roster will include some promising youth, an impact JUCO or high school power forward ready to contribute from day one would have a nice opportunity and help fill a need at the ‘U’.

The Palm Beach State (Fla.) Panthers are off to a 17-0 start and #6 ranking in the NJCAA Division I national poll. Head coach Butch Estes has a strong, team-oriented group of players led by former NCAA Division I player Jonathan Holton and former Texas Longhorn commit Kevin Thomas.

Highlighting the season thus far was a 68-63 victory earlier this month over Louisville-bound guard Chris Jones and Northwest Florida State College. As has been the norm this year for Palm Beach State, they had a significant advantage on the glass over their opponent, posting a 41% offensive rebounding percentage (OR%) and limiting Northwest Florida State to an OR% of just 18%.

Thomas, a 6’9” sophomore forward, has played a key role in the Panthers’ dominance on the boards and is averaging approximately 4 offensive and 9 total rebounds in 20 minutes per game. I recently sat in on a Panthers’ practice at their home court in Lake Worth, Fla., which was the first time I had seen Kevin in person since his days with Grassroots Canada AAU.

Minnesota has shown interest in Thomas in the past and although there has not been much recruiting activity with him recently, the talented Canadian may be a solid fit considering the Gophers’ current seniors. The regular National Letter of Intent signing period for the 2013-14 season begins April 17, 2013.

Rodney Williams, Trevor Mbakwe and Andre Ingram are each in their final year at the ‘U’ and Minnesota will need other players to step up if the team is going to continue their strength in the areas of offensive rebounding and shot blocking.

Thomas doesn’t have a huge frame, but the strength is there and his ability to rebound, block shots and help others on defense are enough that he’s deserving of strong consideration.

During my visit to campus, I was reminded of the versatility and potential that I saw two years ago. Thomas is long and moves well; he’s able to score inside (finishing with either hand) and the lefty also has a sweet stroke away from the basket. With his ability to score, rebound and defend, as well the continuing improvement of his basketball and leadership skills under Coach Estes, Kevin may prove to be quite a valuable addition to a DI program next season.

The video below is from 2010, but gives the viewer a brief look into some his abilities. Physically, Thomas today may be just a bit taller and his upper body size and strength has improved.

Other Palm Beach State Player Notes:

Jonathan Holton - 6’9” forward transferred in from Rhode Island where he averaged 10 & 8 as a freshman; originally from Miami area; committed to play next season for Richard Pitino and Florida International – very nice addition for FIU; double-double machine at PBS.

Darrick Wood – The highly talented guard and former St. John’s commit was at PBS this semester, but did not play. Per discussion with Coach Estes, Wood has now left PBS and the school has given him his release.

Carrington Ward – 6’2” freshman guard from Philadelphia put up big scoring numbers in high school and is scoring well at PBS. Through the 14 games, Ward was averaging 14 points with an effective field goal percentage of 65% (including 18/36 3FG).

Demetric Austin – 6’7” freshman from the DC area has a strong, big build that can move people in the paint. Nice combo of size and skill.

nice analysis. i like the video. though it doesn't really show him rebounding the ball. looks athletic, but not beefy, seems like a good complement to walker and ee.

Would love to add Thomas, looks exactly like the kind of player Tubby goes after for the PF position. Are we even looking at him though? Seems odd that JB would do a big write up like this and we aren't even recruiting him.

about as athletic Russo but 2 less years of eligibility. JB "forgot" to mention he only the 4th leading scorer on the team at under 9 ppg. THESCOUT!

Things are quiet with the Gophers & Thomas right now, but we're in December with the signing period still a few months away.

I'd agree the Gophers seem very keen on Schilling, but he's got an impressive number of schools looking at him and a guy like Thomas is someone I could see the staff revisiting in the future.

Assuming Kevin handles things in the classroom, he can be a nice addition for someone. In terms of Minnesota's needs and some of his abilities, I think the fit is there.

Many ways to look at the different classes at Minnesota also.. adding a JUCO w/two years left means there's another player in the group that graduates after 2014-15 (Dre Hollins, Coleman, Eliason, Osenieks, Walker).. how big of a concern is that? I think you try to make your team as good as it can be next year, but six seniors is a lot. How about 2014 recruiting? For a guy like Reid Travis, would adding Schilling cripple Reid's interest in MN?

Many different perspectives and recruiting can be a very fluid process, but getting a bit off topic.

Summary of Thomas: I like his game and think he could help Minnesota next season; there's been interest, but nothing is going re: recruiting him at the moment.

Would still rather have Thomas. Wonder if the Gophers are seriously considering offering him.

Thanks for the info GW. As long as the general topic is recruiting (OK, maybe I'm hijacking) I'm curious about freshman PG Keith Carter out of Saint Louis U. (2012 Proviso East HS) He just announced he is transferring, Majerus (RIP) gushed about the kid. He's a Chicago-land kid from a great program, a very good student and I like point guards, so I would think he'd be a good fit. We need a banger but I also like the Idea of another point guard as well. What do you think? Thanks in advance.

Gophers wont be offering any scholarships for a PG for the 2013 class, they are in need of bigs and have 2 scholarships to offer, but will only going to offer 1 to save the other for next years class, besides, if he is transferring he has to sit out a year, so he likely will go JUCO route, which mean he would be eligible for the 2014 class, which is the same class as Tyus Jones, so I am sure they would have tyus as more of a priority but if they fail, they might consider him as a backup plan, but its way too early to speculate on Carter now, he could end up anywhere in the country, its best to wait to see what schools are showing interest first.

While the Gophers bringing in another guy who can play point guard next year wouldn't be a bad idea, I think Keith Carter makes sense at a mid major - don't see him as a Gopher.

Some interesting comments from Carter re: his reason for transferring. Not going to get deep into my personal opinion on it, but a couple of things... 1) I think he committed to Loyola (Ill.) originally, but very soon after his verbal he opened things up again... 2) regarding why he is transferring, Carter talked about the desire to redshirt because he wasn't ready to go after an injury, but played 20+ minutes a week ago.

Since he had played a couple of games early in the season before going out with injury, he couldn't redshirt. As for a medical hardship waiver, one requirement is that you remain incapable of playing through the end of the season...

PS - Jordair Jett is putting together a nice season so far. #RepMN

PPS - Always interesting to see what kids transfer mid-year.. for a guy like Carter, he could enroll soon at a new school and be on the floor and playing in December of next season... depending on the team's schedule and academic calendar, this could mean missing as few as 8 or 9 games.. but probably closer to 11-12.

What was the reason Thomas didn't attend Texas after commiting there? Grades?
