According to a tweet from Matt O'Connell at GI Josh Campion has committed to Minnesota and will enroll in January. Could be another reason why Bjorklund will not get an offer.

Good to see him qualify, I believe he was originally a 2009 recruit, so it took him a little bit but it's good to see this kid qualify. I believe he is a higher end recruit than Bjorklund and the kid has put on 50 lbs (good weight, supposedly).

In 2009, he was 6'5" 265 lbs, and now he is listed at 6'5" 315-320. I would have preferred Campion to Bjorklund. I still think there is a possibility that Bjorklund gets an offer last minute, but we now have a really deep class of OL.

dalostpinoy....

I thought my gf's family were the only philippinos in MN.

Could somebody fill me in on what happened with Josh? I remember when he committed, but lost track after that.

I don't know what really happened, but there was a little controversy on the board last spring when he didn't participate in spring. My scant knowledge of the situation is he was supposed to be a gray shirt (ie sign, but not enroll until January 2010). Did he or did he not enroll I don't know for certain. There was a rumor that he didn't qualify. Someone came on the board and said he did and that he sort of got the shaft. I'm glad he found his way back to the U.

The prevailing theory is that he gray shirted in 2009. He was supposedly rehabbing some injury back home (i believe) and he decided to enroll in January of that year (2010). However, when he was going to enroll there was some issue with his academics. If it was some sort of product of some misunderstanding with the clearinghouse, I don't know. He went to prep school in VA and has seemingly fixed his qualifications issues and will enroll in a month.

But yeah, Gophermeister is correct that there does seem to be a rumor floating around that he got a raw end of the deal from Brew as well, but that seems strange that he would go to Prep School if it wasn't an academic issue.

I am surprised to see he is only a 5.6 three star on Rivals. He was quite studly coming out of HS, ranked a 5.7 three star with interest from Notre Dame and Michigan, among others, before committing early to the U. The OL who go the juco/prep school route often go up in esteem (see Roszell Gayden) not down. I know he had back issues and I think academic issues but I hope there is some gas left in the tank. When he was coming out in 09 I thought he had a chance to be a marquee guy in the class.

If he was a 5.7 3*, that means he would have been a 5.8 4* if he had committed to either Michigan or Notre Dame. ;)

Yeah, it is bizarre. I wonder if it has something to do with him being gone for 2 seasons (rather than 1), I don't know. Rivals also puts a ton of stock into offers and he really doesn't have any quality offers outside of us. A couple days ago he didn't have a ranking at all.

Flunks instead of Dunks!!

I am giving Kill an F if he goes after this guy instead of instate boys that are for sure academically sound! if Bjorkland's, Heifort's or another instate seniors scholarship goes to him it is a shame!!! Shame on you KILL!!!

If it makes you feel better, Campion is an instate kid who was (and still is) considered a significantly better prospect than Joe Bjorklund or Ernie Heifort.

You know you are getting a good one who you beat out Newberry and Wagner for an O-Lineman.

The kid is from Fergus Falls, Northern Gopher.

With Kill's record of academic achievement, I'll assume he is in good standing. This does not mean a "no" to Bjorkland. If Bjorkand deserves a scholarship from this staff, I'm sure one will be in the offing.

A Clearing House issue does not necessarily project as an academic risk. It could be something as simple as a core course being disallowed.

He was being recruited pretty hard out of HS by numerous Big 10 teams even though he committed to MN really early and he was ranked a 5.7 from rivals, was rated a top 50 Offensive tackle by both scout and rivals. He was considered one of our better recruits in 2009.

His stock only seemed drop a little bit according to the services. It looks like he wasn't getting the offers pouring in (probably mostly from non-bcs) because he was dead set on going to MN.

Campion also had back surgery after HS.

Someone I talked to from FG told me that Campion is a hard working kid and deserves a break or two. Maybe his time has arrived.

Mr or Mrs Heifort, I'm sorry, your son is just not going to get his B10 offer. Hopefully he walks on to MN and earns one? Or, hopefully FBS schools start to offer Ernie first.

I for one am thrilled to have this young man heading back to play for his state school.
Welcome back Josh, thanks for staying the course and returning home !

I believe this was the case. It can sometimes be difficult to "cross-walk" high school courses into the NCAA Clearinghouse matrix. Minnesota's graduation standards have moved around a lot over the past decade and the NCAA gets hung up on "labels" over "coursework."

Exactly...that's why Bauducco and Shortell are both rated 5.6 with one offer each, while K. McAvoy is a 5.5 with 7 BCS offers and Matilus is a 5.5 with 3 BCS offers.

I didn't say it was 100% based on offers, but they do put a lot of stock into rivals. There have been a lot of players who were offerred by Ohio St and their rating all of a sudden improved.

As I said, it was a mystery to me why he dropped. I imagine it had something to do with his back injury and maybe they think he wasn't as good as they once did, however, rivals does put a lot of stock into offers (doesn't base it entirely on offers).

Offers have to be recognized, but hardly a defining issue. I believe rivals does study the tapes and measurable s on kids as well.

One more point about Campion, and I really root for him since he is a home boy to me..."Go Otters", is that he is going to be 2 years older with all sorts of eligibility left...sounding real good. He maybe waited an extra year to make sure his back was 100% and there may have been a class issue or two. No idea, just glad he is on board.

Gald to have you back in the fold Josh; give 'em hell!!

According to Matt O'Connell again he was at a prepschool, which I will add probably started the clock on his eligibility. None the less I think he is still a quality addition to the incoming line class. 6? Crazy. Now, how 'bout some DBs, statim.

Going to prep school did not start his eligibility clock. From what I understand he has 5 years to play 4.

Is there any chance he plays next fall? I think he's enrolling for Spring semester.
