Jones cleared for Spring Practice

It is very Minnesotan to look at the most athletic RB (my opinion) recruit in decades and worry that he won't be any good. Peak Minnesotan, as Matt Humbert would say.

He'll get by on athleticism alone; whether he has Cobb's incredible durability, toughness, and nose for the hole remain to be seen. I'm not concerned he'll flop, that's a very low probability. I think he was actually as underrated as a RB recruit as Michigan's Derrick Green was comically overrated.

With the big blocking WRs we have (woli) and coming in (holland) the simple swing pass to a back like Jones will be exciting, or screens. Out with one weapon (Maxx), in with another.

+1

Your wrong on the weight room he's allowed contact with the weight coach, nutritionist, and tutoring/academic support team. I'm not sure if he can workout with the team in the weight room but he is being supervised.
Thanks for the clarification. That's excellent news! From all I've heard about the attention to detail and sci-fi scope of those programs, he should be bigger, stronger, faster and fresh and ready to go in the spring.

Regarding his pass blocking I have seen a few videos from the Chicago NFTC camp of him pass blocking in RB-LB one on one blitz pickup drills and he was outstanding in them. Looked much better than 5 star Tyy Isaac or high 4 star Ezekiell Elliott

Here is one of them. Clips are at 0:43 and 1:31 and you can see he was named RB MVP and was named overall camp MVP for the RAS camp partly because of his pass blocking.

Can you copy & paste the article? I don't read the Strib or give them clicks.

you're still reading the Strib....

If you're going to whine about they write about your team, and that's your reason for "not" reading the Strib, don't ask it be copy and pasted. Good grief.

Good points. I suppose hungan1 is curious about what the largest newspaper in the Twin Cities is writing, but also is, like me, making a philosophical decision to boycott the sTrib. No harm in him asking, but in attacking him and defending them you seem to be taking sides. I know which one I'm on.

He's just pointing out how ridiculous it is to "boycott" the Strib, yet ask for it to be pasted for his reading pleasure. I dislike Souhan as much as the next guy, but if that turned into a vendetta against the Strib, I won't read their stuff in any way, shape, or form. It doesn't take a Strib lover to see how ridiculous that is.

Boycotting Wal-Mart doesn't mean sending your wife to the store to take advantage of all the sweet rollbacks (I just puked in mouth). If you're going to take a public stand, then stick to your guns....at least within the same sentence. Not a very admirable "stand." I think that's what he's attacking. It's definitely what I'm attacking. Excuse yourselves from all threads related to Strib articles....that simple.

Good Lord my time around here is going to be short....I can see that already.

I agree and for sure the boycott is all about Souhan. I like to read as many things as I can about the teams I follow, so not clicking on the sTrib is somewhat of a sacrifice. All of the other folks there, like 'em or not, have an audience and an impact on the fan base and perception of the program. I'm interested in what's being said. But, I also have not asked for anyone to paste their articles because I frankly don't want anyone going there to copy it. There is probably a darker side of this battle, kinda like pirating software, music, movies, etc. I guess there's some sort of a noble thievery (Robin Hood) bonus to reading things from the sTrib on GH. Not proud of that, but I remain angry at the organization for what it did, even though in the long run it galvanized Kill's program and support, and the number of times Souhan is mentioned as a louse in stories this fall is pretty satisfying.

Is Kill mistaken?

"We’ve got four wide receivers that we’ve redshirted," Kill said. "We’ve got two great running backs [Rodney Smith and Jeff Jones] that are guys that are redshirted. We’ve got some offensive linemen.

Thanks - You seem to be one of a few people here who seems to have the ability to understand the psychotic nature of the this blog when it comes to Gopher football. Are you sure that you are not from The Daily Gopher?

Only taking the side of getting compensated for doing work. If you want to boycott the Strib because your feelings got hurt that they don't write enough fluff pieces about the Gophers that's fine, but then don't want it both ways when they do write something of interest. The Gophers earned the lack of coverage they got in the past, and now they are earning the press they are starting to get.

I'm not one of them but anyone with half a brain knows the real reason why gopherholers boycott the Strib. IMO Souhan shouldve been canned longh before that.

Look, I would be thrilled if Jones turns out to be as good as you THINK he will be. But, until I see him play in a game, I will reserve judgment. The Gophers have had some very good backs in recent years: Barber, Maroney, Tapeh, Pinnix, Thompson, Hamner, just to name a few.

And, to clarify - I'm not saying that he "won't be any good." He'd better be good. I'm just saying that David Cobb has developed into the heart and soul of the Gopher offense, and expecting ANY freshman to fill those shoes is asking an awful lot - especially a freshman who just sat out the last year.

I'll say it again - Cobb is a proven commodity. Jones is not a proven commodity at the college level - not yet. I hope he's the greatest thing since sliced bread (whatever that means) - but I'm not going to assume that until I see some tangible proof.

Fair enough, and I understand your point. Just a jibe at the cursed mentality of the average Minnesota sports fan (in my experience). Eeyore seems optimistic by comparison. As with everything in our lobes we can choose to look at the bad aspects or the positive aspects and be "fanatics" and build excitement for the team, or alternately tear it down.

I don't usually gush this much over players, but I have a bit of a man crush on Jeff Jones...like Cobb before him. I understand his high school competition wasn't top notch and he may have some difficulty adjusting to the college speed and complexities. I understand other highly rated players never really fulfilled their potential or flamed out. Despite this I have this feeling that the only thing that stops Jones is Jones. The athleticism and physicality are special. He seems to have very good field awareness. We'll have to see if his vision is Cobb-like. Maybe he'll be lazy or a head case or get in trouble with the coaches or law. Maybe an asteroid hits earth tomorrow.

Onward and upward.

happy to see a kid from Minneapolis on the gophers.I hope he is successful.

Let me tell you guys, your boycott of the Strib is making HUGE waves over there. HUGE. Round the clock meeting because two guys on Gopherhole aren't clicking links.

Are you guys mad? Do you think you're doing anything? Maybe get shirts that say "I Can't Read"??

If you don't like Souhan...don't click HIS articles. Write an email to the sports editor if you have to. Your boycott does nothing.

You're doing nothing. The only thing you are doing is wasting other people's time when you whine for them to copy and paste an article.

Children.

So much for doing something on principle or for yourself, huh? BTW - your post is doing less than nothing.

Well said.

I'm no fan of the Strib, either. But, it does get old on every thread on an article from that paper, we get posts asking for others to go back and copy and paste these stories for them.

If you're doing it on principle, don't read the article.

I'm not boycotting anything. I just don't think boycotting the Strib is wrong because it "isn't doing anything" as the poster declared. If someone wants to do it on principle I disagree it is a waste of time and childish.

The 'you're' was intended for those that are boycotting and asking for a copy and paste.....That's not principle, it is hypocrisy.

And my post was in response to Dirk Diggler's post saying that folks who boycott aren't accomplishing anything and are childish. I disagree on both fronts.

A good use of time might be to join the sTrib fan club and spend less time reading posts on GH. I'm ok with wasting my time boycotting, which is a concept I'm having a hard time getting my head around.

If there's a poster boy for maturity, it's a guy who has chosen the name of a fictional porn star as his moniker.
