Not a great offer list but it sounds like he was highly productive. 139 tackles last year.

“It has always been my dream to play at the highest level in college football,” Celestin said. “Rodney and I have played football together since middle school, and it would be great knowing someone up there if I decided to go.”

“I was sort of surprised when I got a call from Minnesota,” Celestin said. “I really didn’t think they were interested any longer. I know it gets cold of there, and that would be an adjustment. I would love the opportunity to play on the D-I level.”

Go Gophers!!

doesn't even have an evaluation from ESPN, 247 or even Rivals and doesn't even have a scout profile that i could find. lots of times ESPN doesn't have an evaluation for a lot of our 2 stars but even rivals and scout? they rate everybody

Probably will have to bulk up to be an every down player , but looks like he could help on special teams in the mean-time.

Based on his film, seems to have great instincts and good closing speed. Red-Shirt and put on a few pounds and I can see a solid LB. Rivals listed James Manuel at 200lbs. out of High School.

I like this if for no other reason than we r getting another kid out of the state of Georgia. That's a top 5 state talent wise and we need a recruiting presence there. Jones was only a 2 star player out of there from last year and he can play. Hopefully Celestin will pan out as well. According to the local paper the Gophers were on Celestin back in August or September but just didn't keep in touch much until recently. He was an honorable mention all state linebacker in a state with a deep talent pool.

Wonder if his speed is good enough that perhaps we move him back to safety?????

Wondered the same thing. Also, since he is classmates with Rodney Smith who's friendly with Holland- is this a dual purpose move to make it more enticing to Holland?

I think it's really hard to transition from HS LB to college S, it's much easier to add 20 lbs. I'd guess he is around 200 lbs right now, which doesn't make him terribly small (similar to Ray Dixon). It's pretty easy for a 200 lbs 17/18 yr old to become a 225-235 lbs 20 year old.

It is not just straight line speed that keeps kids from playing safety. Coop was one of the fastest guys on the team, but he could not change directions and play in the open field like a safety needs to play. No idea if Celestin is flexible enough to play safety but I would think the odds are that he is not if they had him playing LB in high school.Might be nice to have a tweener to play against teams like Iowa, Wisky, and MSU.

Jonathan Celestin getting late push from Minnesota

On Thursday evening, Mundy’s Mill running back Rodney Smith committed to Minnesota over East Carolina and Southern Mississippi.

Celestin said he would likely accept the offer once he gets back home to talk with his mother.

“It has always been my dream to play at the highest level in college football,” Celestin said. “Rodney and I have played football together since middle school, and it would be great knowing someone up there if I decided to go.”

Psh I did that in one year. Damn dining hall buffet style meals.

Celestin is definitely under the radar, he had no other FBS offers. After watching his highlights I see a LB with good speed and instincts and he hits hard, but he'll have to put on weight. Welcome Jonathan!

I am tired of "under the radar" and bad offer lists. This kid will be on special teams this fall. The cliché "he's a football player" actually fits him. He reminds me of a Michigan State defender. No one is going to make a move on him and get by him. He's the anti Mike Rallis

I hope he redshirts instead of plays.

Go Gophers!!
Quite the grammatical wizard we have on our staff. Although perhaps he was recruiting kids that work in a coal mine, and it was a play on words.

Thanks for mining that nugget! I didn't mind it at all!
