Johnson to Portal

Bummed but not shocked. I think when she didn’t go in on Wednesday the writing was on the wall. I usually don’t like transfers but I understand this one and hope she finds a place for her.

She won't stay in the portal long, as I'm sure one of the teams that recruited her will quickly pick her up. Johnson was a highly-ranked recruit coming out of Wilmont, Wis., coming in at No. 60 in ESPN's 2024 top-100 rankings. When you're ranked that high there are plenty of teams that will take a chance on you. Hopefully, this was just a bad match as this team can't afford to miss on many top 100 recruits.

The rankings are not perfect. I’m not saying that she’s not a good player in a different system. However, there is an innate bias in the rankings to look at offensive players, without factoring in their defensive skills, or lack thereof. Additionally, a high school player can look really good against the local competition around her, or even because of the chemistry on her team. You also have other players that get completely overlooked because they don’t play for a “known” school or coach.

I agree with your post. I would add that perhaps a player can be overlooked because of a "super star" on their team. Case in point... I watched McKinney play in the 2025 State Tournament... she had a double/double in 2 of 3 games and was two rebounds short of posting a 3rd in the final game. Crump on the other hand, while scoring more points (81/43) had 9 fewer rebounds for the three games.

She should go to St. Thomas and be a star. Help them into post season. I don’t just want one Minnesota team in the tournament next year I want 2.

Wish her the best, sad it didn’t work for her here.
Unfortunately, she didn't fit Coach P's system. She had a year and a half to get there. But, with Woodson, Braun and the 5 tournament starters returning, without a big improvement in the next 6 months, her playing time would be limited. I wish her good luck with her future team.

Yes, important to note that she had a year and a half with the program and didn't earn many minutes. One would think that she could certainly become an adequate defender in that amount of time. So maybe it wasn't just the defense...maybe the talent level or just not a good fit. Wishing her success with whatever new program she chooses.
