Joey Browner passed away Saturday at the age of 65

Joey Browner was my cathartic tough guy through the '80s, doing things on the football field that a scrawny 5'6" kid could only dream of. Biggest hitter in Vikings history? Undoubtedly the strongest pair of hands--not only this play in the video, but I very vaguely recall him doing something similar to a Buccaneer, either just before crossing the goal line or just after.

At USC, Browner was joined in the DB room by Ronnie Lott, Dennis Smith, and Jeff Fisher (of perpetual 8-8 Titans head coach fame). Marcus Allen was moved to RB because he couldn't get on the field with those DB's in front of him.

Years ago, two friends of mine went to play golf at the Pierz golf course, one of them has a cabin nearby.

The starter tells them that they have someone joining them, and that person turned out to be Joey Browner.

They just kind of nod at each other and wait for the fairway to clear, waiting on the tee. The starter comes out to say that they are going to add a fourth player.

The fourth guy comes out with a Vikings golf bag, Vikings hat and a Joey Browner jersey.

The round is uneventful, but after it was over, my two friends are loading their car and see the fourth player loading their car a couple spots away. So my friend comments "well, that must have been cool for you", and the guy just stares at him.

My friend says "I bet you didn't expect to play with Joey Browner today"

And after a few seconds, the guys eyes go wide and he says "THAT WAS JOEY BROWNER"?

So, Joey Browner and Jeff Siemon passed away on the same day?

One of the earliest memories of my life was watching the Dolphins dominate the Vikings in SB VIII. Siemon was seen repeatedly hanging on for dear life trying to tackle Zonk as he ran roughshod trough the Purple People Eaters.

It was reinforced every time I watched the NFL Films highlight video.

Not the way one wants to get on the cover of SI.

Still a tremendous Viking with a storied career.

Got to meet him twice. Once at a charity golf tournament where he was on a par 3 and he got to hit his tee shot for one of our foursomes balls and again at a Wild game where he was with Henry Boucha. He was a beast on the field. Remember him frequently taking a runner down with one hand RIP Joey 🙏
