Did not know he hung up his sneakers. He played one game last year for St. Mary's and now it looks like he is back in the cities finishing up his degree at the U.

I liked Joe. Wished he had never left. Wish him well.

He shouldn't have left because I thought that he would have been a good fit in Pitino's system. It must not have clicked with the coach.

Does he have a year of eligibility left?

From what we read at the time, this staff thought he had a long way to go to become an effective player in this system. Transferring wasn't his one-way decision.

He never had the handle to be effective in this system. His lack of a jumper wouldn't have helped either. He was essentially a much smaller Rodney Williams.

It's not as if they had so much talent the last two years that they couldn't have used him. Was Daquean McNeal, when he was with the team, an upgrade?

20/20 hindsight.

He was a good kid. I wish him well.

This year would have been his fifth year of eligibility after redshirting. Since he only played in one game past year, he would have had a good case to get a 6th year of eligibility as well.

System my ass, good coaches need to adjust their scheme for the talent they have, especially when taking on a new university. Joe had enough strengths to be an effective contributor if he would have stuck around.

Would love to see him join the squad next season, as unlikely as that is.

Pitino likes to run and that's what Joe does well. It was a mistake to let him go.

I don't know Joe's family that well, but from what I had heard, he decided to transfer before pitino was even hired.

Not sure he really enjoyed being a basketball player.

Coleman was talking about leaving before Pitino was hired. Just a guess but if you have a kid that kind of wants to leave anyway and isn't a good fit for what you want, you're not going to beg him to stay. He could be effective but at 6'3" or 6'4" he couldn't shoot and couldn't handle the ball well so he was a limited guy at a spot where Pitino specifically values shooting, length and ball handling

I truly don't understand why people say he would be a good fit for Pitino's system.

It's relative. He was a much better player than Malik Smith (who had one good game-Nebraska) and Daquan McNeil.

If Coleman had decided to leave anyway, I guess it's irrelevant.

I would have taken McNeil over Coleman (minus the criminal nonsense of course). Much better player for Pitino's system.

Malik Smith was definitely on fire that game, but I remember him having some good games before that as well. But he seemingly shot his wad against Nebraska (in a loss unfortunately), and never got his shooting touch back the rest of the season as I recall.

We'll never know, of course. Different players, different coaches, different systems.

I was curious, so I looked up the stats of the two players. McNeil averaged 1.6 pts/game in single digit minutes. Coleman averaged a little under 9 pts/game in over 20 minutes. He's listed as taller and heavier than McNeil.

Too bad neither worked out.

So, he leaves Minnesota and chooses a school which should cater to his strengths. Doesn't have any success there, and we are arguing whether we should have kept him? He sure didn't prove that we missed out.

I think that McNeil had a better handle and was better with man on man defense. Coleman could drive and dunk now and then, but when other teams made him use his off hand...he was toast. You are right though-we will never know.

Mc Neil had promise and he was progressing. He would definitely give this year's team more options, Coleman was built like a pit bull if I remember correctly McNeil had more length and a better jumper. I always thought if Joe only had Dan's height and Vice versa

It makes for an interesting internet discussion. I always liked Coleman's game because he was aggressive (unlike Dan). Others saw upside in McNeil and I thought he was filler.

I always thought Buggs had a big upside. It will be interesting to see if the growth shown in the first two games translates to the B1G.

In hindsight yes Coleman was a better player than Smith. Really he was a better player than Smith objectively. Thing was Smith was supposed to be a shooter that would help spread the floor and be a guy who knew the system which would help. Coleman was a serviceable player and of course would've played for Pitino but he would've limited what they could do on O because of his deficiencies. In a more 'traditional' offense you can get away with a poor shooter/ball handler at the 3 but Pitino wanted 3 ball handlers. Not to mention his size meant they wouldn't have another long guy out there on D. So he really didn't bring anything that Pitino valued to the table physically or skill wise. He was a tough kid and I liked watching him though. I still think if you combine Joe Coleman's mentality with Dan Coleman's skills you have an NBA player

The guy quit basketball after transferring to St. Mary's, why are some of you so certain he would have played for Pitino. Sounds like he lost the desire to play basketball. We didn't miss out on anything.

Been a great walk down memory lane today with Tubby and Joe threads. Anyone else we should reminisce about today while we're hot?

If I may, I vote for RichmondInsider. That was my favorite day on GopherHole. Discuss

Didn't he get hurt right at the start of the season last year though? His reasons may have been injury-related.
