Hopkins won their first game of the season tonight, with a 102-87 win over Patrick Henry. After trailing 48-46 at the half, Hopkins outscored Henry by 17 in teh second half. Joe Coleman scored 43 to lead the way for Hopkins. Curious to hear what people think of Coleman as a college prospect. He was in Madison on Wednesday night with Rene Pulley, so I think it's fair to say UW has at least some interest in him. I do not believe he has many offers at this point, and I'm fairly certainly none are from high majors.

He's skilled but undersized. i observed him quite a bit last season and I was impressed with his basketball IQ as well. At this point, he doesn't have a position. But I heard he was switching to guard this season. If he grows another inch, he could be a good sized shooting guard. Very athletic.

Interesting. I have only seen Coleman in a JV game and a couple AAU games, but I would describe his game rather differently. From what I have seen, I would say he is a very good athlete who is successful at this point due to his athleticism more than his skill level. Not to say that he is a poor shooter or ball-handler, but I guess I was of the opinion that he needed to refine his game a bit more to develop into a high major prospect. I'd be curious to hear a few other comments about Coleman.

I would have to agree. He is a very explosive athlete and is great at finishing around the rim. From the last time I saw him his skill-set was solid all around, but he would either have to grow 3-4 inches to play small forward or improve his shooting and ball handling in order to play shooting guard at the high-major level. I've been hearing from a lot of people that his game is really starting to come together and his shooting has really improved. Scoring 43 points may be evidence of that. I will definitely have to see him again soon to see how he has progressed.

I never said he was a good shooter. Certainly undersized for a forward and lacks the ball-handling skillz of a guard. Either he concentrates on switching to shooting guard and develops an outside shot, or he grows four inches.

Because of his ties.....

...i.e., being Dan's brother and playing for Pulley, he would seem to be a nice fit for the Gophs. I was curious about the alleged visit to Madison. He doesn't seem to fit Bo's style of play whatsoever. He will also have to become much more disciplined on defense to play for Tubby. The posters have nailed the things that would hold him back, namely his size. Dan was always "tall" so I wonder if Joe is still going to grow or if he's done? If not, he definitely will have to start now working to become a combo guard. He does have a scorer's mentality and that is sorely needed at the moment, will it still be a need in 2011?

Minnesota had a coach at Hopkins last night watching the game and Coleman definately didn't hurt his chances with the Gophers. An improved jump shot is what they really want to see from him. He was a Gopher ballboy for years and has alot of ties to the gophers and MN has great relationship with Hopkins so if they want him, I would say the odds should be pretty good.

I was incorrect. It was not Joe Coleman sitting with Rene Pulley. It was actually Marcus Paige. My bad.

I was at the Hopkins-Columbia Heights game tonight. Hopkins won by about 20 pts and really wasn't close most of the game. Columbia Heights made a run at the start of the second half but the Royals quickly slammed the door shut on any hopes of an upset. The game was incredibly sloppy especially on Columbia Heights' end, which made it difficult to learn all that much about any player, but I'll give my two cents anyway.

Joe Coleman - Impressive athlete - very strong and a great leaper. Must of had 8 - 10 dunks. Almost all his points came in transition. More toughness and athleticism than his bro but less skill and size. Not great hands. Didn't see him handle the ball much. He got a few touches on the block but didn't show any great post moves. I can't recall him making, or for that matter shooting, a long jump shot. Hard to say if he would make it in the big ten. As was said before, if he is capable of handling and shooting the ball he will be a good D-1 player.

Jacob Thomas - Without a doubt the best player on the floor tonight. Silky smooth jump shot. Able to hit shots spotting up or off the dribble. He can go right or left and finish at the rim. Good size. Above average ball handler. His shot selection could be questioned at times, but is far and away the best player on his team, so it is hard to blame him. Not too much he can't do. It's too bad he couldn't get his grades up because the Gophs could use a shooter like Jacob.

i actually heard that he was in wisconson to check in on uw-green bay and not becky. apparently madison was just a stop for gas. just teasin'! ;)

Weezy, I would agree with you on Coleman I had him 13-20 shooting on my sheet with 6 dunks and 7 layups. 1 of those was a monster 2 hand follow dunk on the break after Thomas got blocked twice. I remember 2 outside shots that didn't go in and didn't look pretty. Interesting that coach Novak went small and put him at the 4. That may have limited the number of outside looks he got.

Riley Dearring saw major minutes and was in double figures with 12 points. The talent is there but his youth showed as well as he forced a couple of shots. He had the chance to guard Thomas for a stretch in the first half and I thought he did a nice job there.

Hard to think Hopkins won't be really really scary next season as they have 5 of the 7 guys from last night's rotation returning next year.

I think the Gophers may have had a coach watching the game too.

You say Paige was sitting "with" Pulley. Was it just coincidence that they were sitting next to each other? Or, does Paige have some connection with Pulley? Paige is a guard from Marion, Iowa. Pulley is an AAU dude from the Twin Cities.

For those at CH last night... Did they really just stop the game with 3 minutes left cuz of a scoreboard problem?

With about a minute and a half left, yes they did stop the game because the clock died. They tried to fix it but all that happened was that the horn would keep blaring.

every player has things they will need to work on to help them in college
