The Gophers hoped to get approval to break ground on their proposed $150 million athletics village at next week's Board of Regents meeting. But the school announced Friday that this won't be brought to a vote until the Regents meeting in September.

Senior associate athletics director Chris Werle said this will not affect the scheduled completion date, but merely the groundbreaking date.

Football coach Jerry Kill has repeatedly said he wants shovels in the ground during August, and Athletics Director Norwood Teague said last month that he was confident ground would be broken in August.

Werle said the Gophers still plan to break ground this fall.

Werle said this wasn't the result of a delay in fundraising but did say the university needs time to finish the schematic design and finalize plans for where to build a new track. The current track would be demolished with that land re-purposed for a new indoor football facility.

Technically Kill could take a shovel out and break some ground in August but disappointing to hear things are being delayed some. Still seems inevitable that all of this is going to happen, just a matter of when at this point. That being said I won't feel truly confident about the future of this project until the official approvals are released and construction schedules get put in place. Have seen far to many things go haywire at the U over the years to feel confident in how things are going to play out until official word comes down.

not really. project is still happening. project will still be done on time. some people can needlessly hang wring on this issue if they want to do that to themselves, but i certainly won't be. no reason to.

So would anybody else like to grab a few shovels and start digging? They can work on the plans, but we could start moving around some dirt.
 


With a lawsuit under Title IX pending over demolishing the track, I can understand waiting until that issue is addressed, blame whoever filed the suit for the delay

read a story a while back. believe it was a U of M female cross country or long distance runner, if i recall correctly. said it was her only option to save the track & field teams......as if they were going to freaking disband the track team or something. give me a break. either way, the athletics village project is happening and it will be finished on time. all that matters in the end. go track! :p
 





The one-month delay will be well worth it.

They need the time to complete the technical aspect of the design(s).

Secondly, they want to tackle the track & field issue simultaneously.

The Gopher track & field is pathetic compared to the B1G elite.

The delay itself is inconsequential. The only thing it really means is that Kill's timetable that he has been trumpeting to the media and recruits for breaking ground is not going to happen. But yeah in the grand scheme of things this is a minor bump in the road.

That is exactly the issue. Better make track team happy they are being moved to St. Paul campus.

I assume you mean their facility. The women finished 3rd and the men 6th. Both teams are always competitive and bring home the occasional conference title.

Ummmmm, what did they say, women outlived men by seven years. So, I think you will have plenty of traction should you ever decide to go to one of those retirement mavens I keep hearing about. Heck you can have your own harem. :cool02:
 

It would be interesting to hear how Teague, Pitino and Kill REALLY FEEL about this issue.
