Jim Souhan: "Tubby Smith's arrogance is remarkable"

Yup, we sure had a ton of talent last year with three freshmen playing big minutes and no point guard.

In one column he criticizes Tubby for lazy recruiting and lack of talent. Now the problem is there is loads of talent and Tubby doesn't know how to use it.

Souhan proves he has no idea what he's talking about when he suggests Jerry Kill combine the "coaching ability" of Glen Mason with the likability of Jim Wacker. Mason had a terrible Big Ten record and never finished better than a tie for 4th in the Big Ten. 2 of Tubby's seasons at Minnesota have already been as good as anything Mason accomplished in football. Further, 2 of Brewster's years were typical "Mason" years of 3-5 in the conference and a meaningless bowl appearance. It's clear that's no longer accepted in Minnesota...thank god. Both Souhan and Reusse mentioned that Tubby has failed to win a game in the NCAA or...the NIT tournament. Are these guys that out of touch that they think Tubby winning a game or two in the NIT would do anything for his resume or public opinion? I've read that some posters respect Souhan's take on baseball, but the guy clearly knows nothing about football or basketball and embarrasses himself nearly every time he writes about either sport.

Jim has said many times that we here in GopherHole "don't get it". His job is to give his opinion not report. He has said many times that he is not a college basketball fan so his opinion is really no more noteworthy than mine or yours.

I am confident that Mr. Souhan's primary concern is how many hits or reads he gets on the StarTribune website. That tells his bosses how popular he is. He has learned from Reusse that negative columns stir the pot and results in way more "reads" than positive articles do.

Souhan can claim all he writes are his opinions (which they are) but they are really nothing more than efforts to get additional web page reads. He knows few people will read a column about how much Smith gives back to the community. Smith's perceived arrogance is much more volatile.

Jim's comment doesn't surprise me but, like normal, is completely off point.

Rather than castigate Jim; however, I just want to say how proud I am that Tubby is our coach. My son had the pleasure of attending Tubby's camp last summer. Tubby treats each camper with utmost respect and represents my university with class and grace.

I bring my boys to Tubby's Tip Off each year and Tubby acts like each fan is a guest at his home.

Nicely done on taking the high road. No, I'm not being facetious. This is the correct approach, and will keep my BP down.

I should do that more, but instead, I always end up commenting about how I can't believe Souhan even has the guts to comment on college sports.

And this is what Pat Reusse hath wrought. Again, Pat's got the talent to write good columns, but writes lazy, inflammatory pieces because it's easier to stir up the hits with them, and you don't have to put any research or thought into them. With Pat, it's disgusting, because he's wasting his talent. Souhan is a dunce. Plain and simple. He can't write. I've said this before, and I'll say it again, I could do his job better than he does. And I'm not one who normally bloviates about being able to step into the shoes of offensive coordinators, or coaches, or anything else. But Souhan is an objectively awful writer. And he sees Pat writing idiotic bomb-throwing columns, and so we have to endure poorly written, ill-conceived, lazy, intentionally aggravating columns from each on a bi-weekly basis. I'm not clicking the link. I'm not a subscriber to the Star Tribune. And it's mostly because of the weak sports section (and the editorial board, but that's for another forum). Newspaper isn't dying because of the internet. It's dying because the people running the dailies have gotten lazy, and leave people like Souhan in their jobs.

Expectations were so much higher going into the season, the way it turned out was disappointing, the point you are making is obvious, you don't win with inexperienced guards.

I also think the next seasons' success is going to depend on the 3 returning guards more than the three new guards.

Jim Souhan: "Tubby Smith's arrogance is remarkable"

Master of irony but beyond that, Soup is one worthess POS.

It's remarkable? I'd call it more "typical" of a big time coach, rather than "remarkable". Tubby is a humble person in general, and he's a great guy in most respects, but when it comes to coaching basketball, yes, I'd say he's pretty arrogant about running things the way HE wants them done. It's what's gotten him to all his success. I don't think you can be a successful coach for that long without being a tad stubborn and arrogant about how you operate, that's just my opinion though. It just so happens that it kinda bit Tubby in the behind at the end of this year. Wouldn't be shocked to see him come back with a pretty good year next year.

Arrogance is a strong word. There is nothing I'd call "arrogant" about Tubby Smith. He's a pretty humble and gracious man. I think "hubris" is a better term at least in the context of his abilities and skills as a teacher of the game.

Jim Souhan's Ignorance is remarkable.

Only exceeded by his arrogance. If you listen to him and Reusse on the radio, you would think they both retired as hall of fame coaches in every sport. In fact, the only sport they know much about is baseball, which they should since they are shills for the Twins. Reusse used to like BigTen basketball, but nothing is good enough for him now but baseball.

I hope not, the only one of the three I have hopes of ever being a starter is Austin Hollins, if the others are more than deep reserves next year, we will miss the tournament again. You can't be chip's size and not have a good midrage jump shot and play, and maverick may have a future as the "true point guard" (meaning he has no chance of scoring on his own) people seem to want so desperately, but if it is next year we have a big problem, barring two other players turning into offensive stars.

Getting to the point I can't read any of the local writers. I am 99% convinced they like to have a loser here...some how makes them all feel better about themselves when they can rip coaches.

I can't disagree with this. I see more potential for Chip than you do, but I think only Austin has the chance to be an impact player. Then again, if the other two stick around for four years, who knows? I never though Aaron Robinson would do anything, or Jeff Hagen.

Couldn't agree more.

If Tubby is looking at the two guard option to share pg duties it will be Welch and Andre -IMO. Austin and Rodney can duke it out for the three spot (maybe Oto too).

======

Souhan- The Wild continues to be my favorite Minnesota winter sports team. While the Wolves embarrass themselves and the Gopher basketball team underachieves, the Wild are overachieving, given their talent level and injuries. I don't know if Todd Richards is a brilliant tactician, but his guys play for him, which is more important.

How'd that turn out jackass? Stick to hockey and baseball then I will never have to read you again.

Jim's ability to hold a job as a sports columnist in a place with a major college basketball team is remarkable.

I will give Souhan credit here, I think he has given the Gopherhole a new headline to mock and use in replace of "akward win over Indiana proves Gophers not contendors"

Haha. Mackey is still sore over that. He mentioned it on the radio again Monday as they were mocking GH over supposedly wanting Kill to get a contract extension.

PUCK SOUHAN.

I hope Oto make it rain

If I still read Souhan, I might comment, but I have not bothered to read either him or Reusse for quite a while now. Not worth wasting the 2 minutes it takes to read one of their articles.

If there is a team in MN that has no excuse it is the Wild. They have been sold out every year of their existence save this last one and should be a whole lot better talent wise and record wise then they are...Next to the Vikes, they are probably the biggest disappointment the state has.

I guess I don't see anything inaccurate in his column. Granted, he's a *&^!#*&^!#*&^!#*&^!#*&^!#*&^!#bag....but he's also right.

Those with no expectations cant grasp that he is right on most counts. And they wont admit it.
