Jim Souhan column: Uh, Kentucky: Y'all were right about Tubby

This is top 15 team with either of the top two ball handlers. Nolen doesn't break his foot and Joseph doesn't quit, Souhan has nothing to write about.

Wow. I'm going to kick up my heels, eat some popcorn and watch the fireworks here.

Not sure why anyone would want to read this article, I glanced at it and decided not to waste my time by reading it or to waste others time by posting it here.

It's almost like this town was just waiting and hoping for a losing streak to commence bitching. Puerto Rico seems so far away.

Dear Jim Souhan,

You are retarded. That is all.

This is going to get ugly...and fast.

Winning cures all. If we don't start winning soon, we'll start to see "fireworks" all right.

Agreed Jon. I read the Title of his article and I said fu*k Souhan. That was all I read.

I also like his shot at Paul Carter not being a leader last year. Totally wrong, and completely unnecessary.

The article is just a representation of a modus operandi of the sports media in generating hits and revenue.

When you are good, they inflate expectation to the point that you are set for failure leading to another controversy. Regardless of succes or failure, they continue to make money. A fool-proof strategy of over-hyping. When you are down, the men of integrity kick hardest in your gut by inflamatory rhetorics based on selective perception. To make money off ya.

Nobody is immune to criticism. Tubby should be no exception. For now, however, the team probably is better off without the harshest interpretations of the events surrounding the team and the coach when other interpretations are just as plausible.

Journalists and wannabes should do whatever they need to do. But, hope some of us can wait till the end of the season for the harshest judgment. Then, plenty of time to render any judgment upon and paint the man with whatever ill will one might have.

Go pantherhawk yourself Souhan. And I didn't even read the article.

I get the feeling he wrote this about 10 minutes after Tubby was hired in sort of madlibs way, just waiting to fill in the details.

I think it's about time the honeymoon ended. He got 3 1/2 years and now people are wondering why his team is no better than it was when he arrived. I feel the scrutiny is fair considering he draws the biggest check that says State of Minnesota. He brought this on to himself with his comments after the last two losses.

That said, winning cures everything. I'm indifferent about him staying, other than it could cost us Andre Hollins if he bolts. He might be the best out of state recruit we've had in a long time and a top 30 McDonalds recruit if he was committed to Kansas or UNC.

From what I have read on the hole, excuses are for losers.

from what i have read on the hole, tubby gets a free pass. but from who? the media is killing him right now. 90% of new threads recently are more negative towards him than positive.

some don't like dealing with facts.

+1. Souhan usually pisses me off, but mostly all of what he said I agreed with. He didn't go out of his way to take jabs at Tubby in all honesty. He just made fair points that of course are going to piss of faithful gopher basketball fans. We wouldn't be in this predicament if Cobbs or Devoe wouldn't have transferred. He recruited them, so it's his problem that they ultimately ended up leaving. He should have recruited players he knew were going to want to stay and wouldn't be whiny babies. But he did, and it bit him in the ass. Same goes for royce. Took a big risk, bit him in the ass. His tenure has been a disappointment for what we thought we were going to end up getting, there is no doubt about it.

Souhan writes a negative article about Tubby, what else is new?

Why bother posting the link?

Do you care what this guy says? Honestly, he's toxic trash, so why even acknowledge the existence of his "work"?

team not better then it was 3 1/2 years ago...how can you write that and even take yourself seriously...

Tubby is not immune from criticism but get real...the team is far better with him as HC then most everyone else the Gophers could get to be hC...

Unless you are dreaming of the days of Monson that is...

Exactly. Should we be upset with the way this year has gone? Yes. But let's not forget that our expectations for this year were much higher than they ever have been, especially after PR. The best year under Monson, '04-05, was so much fun because we won with a hard-working group of guys with the lowest of expectations.

I think Tubby deserves his share of criticism at this point. I'm sick of watching teams like Wisconsin out-perform us. But, this team is better than, and has more potential than, it ever did under Monson.

nothing wrong with what Souhan wrote. just the overlly sensitive crowd on the Hole can't take anything negative every being said or written. and the fact that it comes from the hated by this board Souhan makes it even a more sensitive issue for them.

Hmm. 16-8 not better than 9-22? Hmm.

Comparison

Tubby was 263-83 (76%) in 10 years at UK. He left in 2007. UK is 94-37 (72%) since he left.

Gophers were 162-159 (50.5%) in the 10 years PRIOR TO Tubby coming to town. Gophers are 79-47 (63%) since he arrived.

The % are rounded.

FOT: "The % are rounded."

So is my belly!!!

From a somewhat "outsiders" opinion (Iowa fan living in MN) the Tubby "situation" is somewhat analogous to when Tom Davis came to Iowa. In that, the first few years, Davis did well with George Raveling's leftover recruits. However, slowly the level of basketball recruit went down at Iowa, yet Davis stubbornly did not change his uptempo style of play. I kind of see what Souhan is getting at, in that, at Kentucky Tubby had good initial years due to left over recruits, but then never kept getting that level of athlete. It remains to be seen if he can consistently get highest caliber of recruits and perhaps adjust his coaching style to fit his personnel.

Tubby was 132-43 his first 5 years at UK and had #1 ranked team in 1998.
Tubby was 131-40 his last 5 years at UK and had #1 ranked team in 2003.

UK recruited 5 McDonalds A-A recruits between 1990 and 1997 (before Tubby).
UK recruited 7 McDonalds A-A recruits between 1998 and 2007 (when Tubby left).

UK signed #1 class in 1992 and had 4 (of 8) classes ranked Top 20 or better from 1990-97.
UK signed #1 class in 2004 and had 7 (of 10) classes ranked Top 20 or better from 1998-2007.

I bet you are glad you all ran Dr. Tom Davis off, huh?
