Jim Molinari one win away from taking Western Illinois to the NCAA tournament

For those of you that didn't have the pleasure of knowing Coach Mo - he is top notch. Honestly, aside from my Dad and Brother, is the best man I've ever met, and an incredible coach on top of it. I just hope he makes it - it's so tough to recruit there, and he's basically built this team out of nothing.

Monson's in, Niko Medved (one of Coach Mo's assistants here) is with Tim Miles at CSU and they're in, and Coach Mo may be next. Looks like our former coaches landed on their feet!

Go Leathernecks!!!!

Neither LBSU nor Colorado St are in yet. If LBSU doesn't win their conference tourney they are out and if Colorado St loses their first game in the conference tourney they will be sweating bullets on Sunday.

They have to beat SDSU. Nate Wolters 31 pts, 7 rebounds, 6 assists, 40 mins in semifinal win. We didn't need him.

Sorry - I should have said they are most likely in. Not locks, but I think they've earned it.

I wouldn't even say likely in for either. Both are about 50-50.

Gophers have more top 50 wins than both

Yes, lets offer a kid who's only other offers were from ND and SD.

Not this *&^!#*&^!#*&^!#*&^!# again. Do you think he would be the same player here? Starting since you're a freshman and playing 40 minutes would help your development in my mind.

I agree. I remember when he was DePaul's top recruiter. I know it doesn't mean anything but Ray Meyers and I shared the same barber for several years. Truly a gentlemen and always cordial to a die hard Gopher fan.

Go DePaul!

Coach Mo would have been the perfect fit for the "Joel maturyities" on this board, ala Dr Don and his peeps. In retrospect, and in fairness to Dr Don, Coach Mo could not have done much worse than Tubby and would have saved the University a lot of salary money in the process. I hope the new AD brings the necessary culture change in the department that will bring a winning attitude to the fan base, including many disenfranchised members like me who exist on Gopher hole. It is pretty bad when we have to look at our former coaches success and think about what "might have been". It points out the real problem here at Minnesota is with the Culture and not the coach.

Good Luck Coach Mo.....

College basketball needs more guys like Coach Mo. The primary reason he took the job here (a step down) was that Monson allowed him time during the season with his kids who were living in another city, a high priority for him. I hope he makes it, and scares the heck out of a one or two seed.

Definitely pulling for Jim Molinari. I first got the pleasure of covering Coach Mo's teams as a sports reporter (when he took NIU to the NCAA tourney), then getting to know him more on a personal level when he was an assistant at the U. An easy man to like & a first-class individual.

I've really been pulling for SDSU and Nate Wolters to make the NCAA tourney because I think Wolters (like Ben Woodside before him) would shine under the bright lights of the NCAA Tournament, but now that the Jacks are being opposed by Western Illinois, I'm pulling for Coach Mo all the way.

24.3 minutes & played in all 30 games as a freshman with 11 starts

He probably would have been redshirted, but he would be starting right now & playing at a high level in the Big Ten.

SDSU alumnus here, so go Jacks!

As far as all of the talk about whether Wolters would be putting up the numbers that he is on a B1G team, it's irrelevant either way. How about we just leave it that he's a great player and having a stellar career.

Naters gonna Nate.

FYI - for those of you interested in watching, it's on ESPN2 at 8pm tonight. To think he's this close...I'm so excited for him!

Former Gopher guard Wade Hokenson is an assistant on Molinari's staff:

Go Gophers!!
If you want to follow Wade on Twitter, he's great at keeping people posted, and responding to fans, his handle is @Hokenson

This. He passed up a number of "bigger" jobs so he could be as close to his kids as possible. I remember him driving the 6 or so hours home after practice for a kid's bday party, and drive back all night to be here for 7am practice. With all that, I've never seen a harder working guy, his work never suffered. We got 24/7 out of Coach Mo, as does Western Illinois now.

Coach Mo is a nice guy. I met him after one of his radio shows at Applebees and learned that he has family in my home town. We talked for a little bit after that. Best of luck to him!
