Rough week for college basketball. First Deano, now Tark the Shark. Two staples of the college basketball world since I started following the sport. Somewhere there is a towel with Shark's teethmarks, and it is crying.

I'll miss the Shark. The man who took on the NCAA and won and had some of the most fun teams to ever watch.

His '77 team was my favorite team to watch ever. The passing on breaks was awesome.

Reusse: Greatest night ever in hoops: Tark 103, Duke 73

Jerry Tarkanian died on Wednesday. OK, he was a tad controversial, but his UNLV teams were wonderful to watch compete. This was particularly true on April 2, 1990, when UNLV (and Tark) won its lone NCAA title. It was a privilege to write this game story for the Star Tribune:

DENVER -- The folks in Las Vegas were right all along. The Big Year was here.

The Rebels of Nevada-Las Vegas won the national championship on Monday night with a performance that left the 18,000 witnesses in McNichols Arena stunned, including Michael Krzyzewski of Durham, N.C.

"There is a difference between not playing well and them not letting you play well," Krzyzewski said. "This was one of the great performances I've seen on defense."

This might have been the greatest performance anyone has seen on defense.

The classic one: "The NCAA is so mad at Kentucky they're going to give Cleveland State another year of probation."

It was 24 years ago yesterday the defending champ Rebels went to #2 Arkansas and played Todd Day, Oliver Miller, Lee Mayberry and beat them 112-105. Miss the days when guys stayed 2-3-4 years. Kentucky isn't must-see TV this year.

If Kentucky is on tv somewhere, I go watch reruns of Pawn Stars.

Some of the most enjoyable basketball to watch, ever, were the Tark teams with Larry Grandma-ma Johnson, Hunt, Anthony, Augmon, et al. Those darn pictures with Richie "The Fixer" Perry in the hot tub with Butler, Hunt, and Moses Scurry.

I will never be convinced that UNLV didn't throw that game to Duke. Not ever. It's too bad too. Coach K and the Dukies get a National Title they didn't deserve and UNLV got forever tarnished. Oh well....

The only problem with that quote is the NCAA nailed Kentucky hard after they were caught cheating under Eddie Sutton.

Two of my favorite college basketball coaches have died within a week. Damn.
