Jerry Kill & Tracy Claeys press conference notes - Kill is managing time, recruiting,

and working on a lot of things. Here are the press conference notes. As always, didn't catch everything, but got the general comments.

On a personal note, it was great to have Jerry Kill back. To see him focusing on himself, and see how truly humble he is, makes him such an easy guy to root for.

Jerry Kill:

• Coach Claeys and I have been together for a long time, and we think alike. I've had a different perspective, but I'm going to defer to him to talk about the game.
• It's like anything, I've had things in a different perspective over the past few weeks in the box, I've listened to the people that are a lot smarter than me. I was at every practice last week, I met with the coaching staff on Sunday, what was good about that is for the state of MN and our fans, I stayed up there with Billy Miller, he had coached against NE and never beat him. We just stood up there and watched all the fans, I saw my wife almost get run over.
• As a HC, I had to think about the next week, you're only as good as your last game. But you need to enjoy the few moments that you can.
• I'm managing my time better, last week, I needed to be around the coaches and players, I wasn't dodging the media. I spent a ton of time recruiting, I made sure that our recruits hung in there, which they have. I changed my role. I have an extreme amount of trust in our staff. I'm not going to worry about how we do it. I'm working smarter, and I've got great people. I put a lot of hours in and I worked hard. I need to share the responsibility better. I need to be responsible to you (the media) and make sure I communicate to you. We just redefined our roles. I've had great advice from some of the best in the country, Chuck Pagano from the Colts reached out from me and I'd never heard from the guy. I've listened to a lot of people now, I hadn't the past 30 years which is why I'm in the situation I'm in.
• If it ain't broke, don't try to fix it, I'm not going to try to fix things, my ego isn't that big. I just want to win.
• There's a way to manage things, and I've been in the game 30 years, and you have to change with the times, and I have to be smarter. I've figured it out a little bit.
• I've got two head coaches on our staff, all of us have been through a lot. We've all helped each other out, we're a unique bunch.
• I kind of enjoyed it up there in the press box, you're in up there and can't hear anything. I got to have a Diet Coke, and if you need to go to the bathroom you can because there so many TV timeouts. We aren't going to screw it up right now, I will be in the box vs. Indiana. I'm taking one day at a time.
• I walked in on Friday with my list of things we needed to do - and they had fun with me, they had someone that sat in my chair, but I just sat aside. Those guys are messing me with, and we've had a lot of fun over the last couple weeks. It's nice to go to practice and not have to yell. Adversity helps you find out about things. I didn't really have to say a lot, those kids have picked it up.
• I give all the players credit. Our players are relentless and have done a great job for us, as have the coaches.
• If you're not very smart, you need to have a lot of good people around you, that's what I've done.
• We all talk, there's no agenda, we all coach. You've got to make critical decisions, you're the head coach. Today I visited with the offense, and every idea I had was on the damn board because we've been together for 20 years. I look at it that we have 9 head coaches, all of us are capable and know what they're doing. When I'm not in there, we're just one man down.
• You all know about that than I do - you seem to know everything (laughing). Everyone has seen my parking spot down there, it's been empty. I'll be driving in February. I'm going to be driving that truck to, I'm going to order the damn thing this week.
• A lot of you have reached out to me, and it's more than appreciated.

Tracy Claeys:
• We averaged 7.7 yards or something like that, if you do that, you're going to win a lot of ballgames. We gave up a few big plays on 1st downs, but we were able to keep them to 3 yards or less or so. Those are big parts. How successful you are on 3rd down, is related to how well you do on 1st down.
• On IU's passing offense - Colton is a kid we looked at coming out of HS, he averages 6 yards a carry. They use the pass to set up the run. We'll have to make sure we respect the run, and don't give them a 2 way go. We couldn't get Colton to visit, so we never offered him.
• When you compare talent and how they're going to attack you, you won't have that history with IU like other Big 10 schools.
• We've got high goals set. We're not going to be happy with the 6 wins. If you put all of our players and coaches in a room, and no one wants a 6 win team. Nobody is satisfied with where we're at right now.
• Phillip has been very efficient, he's had so many throws that have been close. We can win with either one, they are both great competitors.
• We don't know if we'll have Rodrick Williams back, that's the only questionable player.
• Coach Kill is the one that's spent most of the time on the phone recruiting.

Thanks, GL. I watched the recording of the Press Conference online and agree with you completely - it's great to see Coach Kill back and it's great to hear him addressing questions. He's just a good dude.

Before it seemed like he had the mentality that it was his doctors and Rebecca's issue to fix his health - seems like he's really making changes now. I don't think many HC's could do this, just take a step back, and do what's best for the team.

Jerry needs a media guy to help coach him on answering questions. His answers are okay, but they need polish. And, like anything, he needs to practice and time is of short supply. Maybe during his hiatus, he will practice taking questions and answering them in the mirror and with a recording of what he says so he can see what he does. Even 15 minutes a week would help.

I always have trouble finding the press conference online. Can someone help?

I get the feeling that the QB situation will stay the same as long as the win streak lasts. I hope Kill returns to the sideline soon. I can't wait to see him get a Gatorade bath.

How long has it been since he has driven?

I honestly can't remember the last time I saw his car parked in his spot. So to be seizure free for 6 months will be a huge accomplishment.

When SVSU was interviewing coaches for it's vacancy, on paper Kill seemed like an afterthought, with no previous college head coaching experience. Then in the interview process, he became the clear-cut choice, head-and-shoulders over some other fine candidates. The president, a pompous ass with a Phd from Ohio State, didn't want Kill because he didn't speak well enough and his grammar and English were unpolished. I hope he never changes...and I'm pretty sure I don't have to worry. lol

- All of that is very good to hear. Sounds like he's on the right path both on the field and to getting his health in a manageable position.

- The thing about the "two Head Coaches" on staff puzzles me. Dan O'Brien was a Head Coach at Concordia St.Paul and Bemidji High School, and yes, I had to look that up.

Bill Miller has an EXTENSIVE record, including two stops now at Minnesota:

2011: Minnesota - Assistant Head Coach/Linebackers
2009: Kansas - Linebackers/Co-Defensive Coordinator
2008: Louisville - Linebackers
2007: Western Michigan - Defensive Coordinator
2005-06: Arizona - Defensive Coordinator
2003-04: Florida - Associate Head Coach/Linebackers
1999-02: Michigan State - Defensive Coordinator
1995-98: Miami (Fla.) - Defensive Coordinator
1989-94: Oklahoma State - Defensive Coordinator
1986-88: Minnesota - Defensive Backs
1983-85: Nevada - Defensive Coordinator
1981-82: Drake - Defensive Backs
1979-80: Oklahoma State - Graduate Assistant
1978: Texas-Arlington - Graduate Assistant

But that doesn't include any Head Coaching experience either. So is he talking about Claeys or is there somebody else.

I agree and disagree - I agree with you that he's not polished, but I couldn't disagree with you more on the latter. He's genuine and isn't trying to be somebody or something he isn't. No, he isn't the most eloquent, but you'd have to be an idiot to not understand the points he's making, and to me, his lack of polish makes him come across as very honest, which makes him that much more unique and likeable.

I know you meant well with this comment, but Coach Kill doesn't come off as the type of guy that really gives a rat's ass what the media thinks. Will that be a downfall? Who knows. I think the diehard fans and the administration have taken to him - the two parties that really matter.

Only my opinion.

I disagree completely. I think Kill is a tremendous speaker. He is a little country but that is his style. He could easily be more polished but I am pretty sure he knows the country twang works for him.

The somebody else would be Limegrover.

Thanks, was skimming for "Head Coach" and must have went right by the "Interim".

Okay that's four. Wonder who Jerry was leaving out?

That's definitely a rhetorical question by the way.

Kill is chosen or asked to speak all over the country. I love hearing him talk. He may not be super polished as a speaker, but he's genuine and honest and always has a great message.

Bill Bellicheck does little more than mumble and grunt his way through press conferences and he's widely thought of as the best coach in the NFL. You're over-thinking it.

That's cause he hates the media. Not because he can't provide polished answers.

I'd rather have the right answers than the right delivery. I don't mind Country Jerry's speaking style one bit.

I also really liked the comment about if its not broke, don't fix it, and "we aren't going to screw it up right now." We have rattled off two big wins for our program since Kill went up to the box. I think that was coincidence, I don't at all think that we are winning because Kill is not running the show down on the field. However, when you find something that is clicking, ride it until it stops. We should stick with the same routine we have gone with these last two weeks so long as we stay hot. Its kind of like when a goalie gets a minor injury in hockey and the backup comes in and posts a pair of shutouts. Even when the starter is back, ride the hot hand for as long as it goes. I don't dispute at all that Kill is and should be the starter, but Budweiser puts it best: its only weird if it doesn't work.

If you have 15 minutes to spare, I highly highly highly recommend every Gopher fan to watch Kill's portion of the press conference, which starts at 17:35 of the video. Kill is pretty emotional at the end there, talking about driving a truck in February, and his answers on what his role will be moving forward is interesting; it seems like he's thinking he should do less and trust assistants more with decisions. It also seems as if he's thinking about staying in the press box indefinitely.

Kill talks like he's from southern Kansas.

That ain't going nowhere.

Thanks, Maximus - couldn't type fast enough, those were the two he mentioned by name.

You are over thinking here.

What you see is what you get with Coach Kill. Jerry doesn't need any help thank you. He is his own person. And he can relate to people. Just listen to what he has to say. It all makes perfect sense.

I disagree completely. I think Kill is a tremendous speaker. He is a little country but that is his style. He could easily be more polished but I am pretty sure he knows the country twang works for him.

Where did I say he's not a good speaker? All I said is that he's not polished, nor the most eloquent, which you acknowledged "he's a little country... He could easily be more polished." I'm the one saying I wouldn't change a thing about him!!!
