Here are my quick, unedited notes (typing live as Kill talks) from his press conference:
• We've had a busy couple days, getting some haircuts and all. We're trying to get ready for a very, very good football team, and play much better than we did a year ago.
• Barker won't practice today. It's back where the Achilles is, he turned his ankle. We met today with the trainer and coach staff, it's a time thing. It's certainly a concern, we'll know more on Weds.
• Offensive line - was the best they've played all year, Jon Christenson the redshirt freshman was the most impressive. He did a great job of snapping the ball. They are a very difficult team to prepare for, and to execute like that, he really did a good job. Our guys just played better, faster and with more confidence. Hopefully we can continue to build on that. I was glad for them, young group. Our offensive coaches have done a good job of knowing who we have, and young people.
• We really need Eddie Olson to come back, but he won't practice today either. I was hoping he'd be able to play, but don't think that's the case.
• When you're a QB, won a state championship, been successful, that goes a long way. Nelson will continue to make progress, but there's nothing like game experience. He's done a good job, but as a QB, you're expected to do that. Just like a HC.
• Michigan will be the toughest defense that we've seen yet...and that's no disrespect to anyone else. Not many people have moved the ball very successfully against them.
• On Linebacker depth - Rallis won't practice today, hopefully we can get him back by Weds. All other LB's will practice today.
• Wells is a tough kid. He's gotten stitched up in the thigh, there's not much you can do. I think he'll find a way to try to play. Tuesdays and Weds. Are really tough on you.
• There's nobody like Denard Robinson, he's electrifying. He's worth going to the stadium to go and see. He'll make you miss, he just makes you look bad. You try to keep him in the box, and you try to keep him in there, and not get the football...but they do a great job of finding ways and plays for him. Coming out of HS, Coach Rodriguez didn't care about his size.
• There's no doubt, Denard Robinson will be playing, they just won't let the media know. You try to simulate it in practice (defending him) but there's no way to be able to do that. We'll do everything we can, it's hard to prepare for him. Everyone in the country has that problem. More about your assignments and not giving him running lanes.
• I give Michael Carter the credit for his turnaround. Michael struggled with the tasks he had to do, and he's done what he's asked him to do. I'm happy for him, and hope he continues that. His sequence at corner was impressive, you won't see that often.
• I was the 1st person out of my family to graduate from college. My Dad was a hard man, you did this and that. He'd have a talk with you and knock the heck out of you - so getting away from that, was tough. These are kids we're dealing with. It takes some apples a little longer to turn red than others.
• People don't see what players have done to turn around like Michael, that's what we see everyday.
• If we want to compete, we haven't won a B10 title in 45 years, so you need to look at other programs, and see where you're going. Look at Oregon, they changed theirs quickly, but they had huge investments. We want to compete for a B10 championship. It doesn't happen overnight.
• On St. Baldrick's fundraiser - Connor Cosgrove came to me a month or so, we have had a lot of different private conversations. He said he was working with young people, and wanted to do something, and asked if he could talk to the team about it. I haven't seen Rallis, he's been hiding from me. He's got the same hairstyle as me. It's not about football, it's about a kid like Connor that has gone through so much, and they rally around him. When you have young ladies cut their hair, it's not an easy thing to do, and they look great. He's one that's matured at an early age. He's had to mature. Going to the hospital on his own seeing 3 and 4 year old kids, that's his choice, not something we've told him to do. There's not anybody that's not proud of Connor. He comes in everyday, with a smile on his face. He came in last week to talk to you all, right after chemo. You never know what that did for people yesterday...not just the money raised, but a kid seeing something like that. I know he'll be coming to my office and already talking about how to make it bigger and better next year.
• I think anytime that you're building a program and so forth, they had a good D-Line, but our kids upfront probably got tired of me saying we need to get better. It's a team effort, and when you get the ball down the field early in the game, and take advantage of guys jumping routes. A good mixture is always good.
• The bottom line is, we won, but we're going to do our job, 2nd half was okay - but we didn't make these mistakes in the 1st half, why did we make them in the 2nd half.
• I could walk out on the field today, and we have a lot of kids redshirted right now, that continue to grow and get bigger, our future is good, our recruiting is good, everything is going where we'd like it to go.
• On the small crowd - I can only control what I can control. IT's not like this is the 1st go around. Winning solves a lot of problems, the more we win, TCF Bank will be packed, and we'll have to build onto it. There's a tremendous amount of loyal people. It's our job - it's not our fans fault. We need to put a good product out there. As you win games, that won't be an issue, there's enough passion in this state, and in this room.
