Here are my live notes from the presser...
• The crowd is getting bigger this week - must be something big going on (on media turnout)
• Derrick Engel did get banged up, we'll know more as the process goes with his doctor. We'll get an MRI.
• An ACL is the worst thing you could do, until you get an MRI, you don't know. Until I know 100%, I can't comment.
• Kill did not remember when Engel got hurt, they didn't have practice yesterday
• Offensively, WI has been doing the same thing since Ron Dayne and Barry Alvarez was there. They haven't changed, and they're not going to - why would you change? What they're different at, is that they're also in the top 10 in the country on defense. That's what's made them better. I'm not too sure that this is not their best football team.
• His resume at Utah state, that's not an easy place to win. And with Coach Alvarez hiring him, that's credibility right there. They aren't just going to hire anybody.
• Coach Alvarez has been good to me. We played them at NIU. Last year, I was getting on the bus, and didn't feel too good and he pulled up, and didn't have to, and grabbed me and said a couple of things between him and I, but it was good words.
• It's a confidence level, when you have success...we've made some plays, the offensive line has done some good things. We knew from film that we were getting better, but we still weren't making enough good plays. We've played hard, and made a few things happen on defense, the kids are relaxed and having fun, they're just going out and playing right now.
• I'm going to do the same thing, we're doing very well in how we're working together, that's what's best for our football team right now
• Our job is to keep them grounded, and save all that energy until Saturday. They know all about that, our job is to make sure we prepare ourselves. They know we hadn't beaten Nebraska in 50 years, they know all this. This is the 1st time since 1901 since both teams have been 6 games over .500. There is lots and lots of history.
• Does 20 degrees change anything? Kill: It's going to be colder! (laughing) it's going to be a good old fashioned football, Midwest, tailgating, all that makes college football.
• It's getting warmer for me and colder for Coach Claeys, I can't hear anyone that's booing me, I may just put my cot up in there, it's a safe place to be. I'm getting older, I can go to the bathroom when I want.
• Injuries are part of it, you've gotta stay healthy. We can't afford a bunch of injuries. We've got some young guys that are playing, I'm going to tell them, you're sophomores now, you've gone through enough games.
• I know I'm not a special teams guy, because Sid has told me I'm not very good at that (laughing). - Note, Sid did not hear that comment.
• When I came back, everyone had a little bounce in them. You can talk about success, but if they don't win, it doesn't really matter. The confidence level goes up as you have success. The best thing they've done is handle success.
• We're 11/14 on 4th down. 3rd down is going to be a big deal, we can't go 3 and out. We have to sustain drives. We're not going to throw it 40 times.
• You cannot turn the ball over
• We do have some kids that are healthier than they would have been without the bye week
• The more you win, the more people come. I can't worry about that. I do have confidence in the fact that our state is excited. We need to limit their (badgers) tickets!
• Nebraska travels well, and there were some pretty quiet people that left that (TCF Bank) stadium.
• On if this is his biggest game - they're all big. You're only as good as your last game. Penn State, Nebraska were big, now WI is. MSU will be big. You have to approach it that way.
Anytime you play great defense, you'll work your way up real quick. When you play great D, you have the chance to do a lot of things. Wisconsin is an underrated football team, because I think they're as good as they've ever been.
