As usual - will post the official transcript later this afternoon, these are my quick notes:
• I appreciate everybody being here, this afternoon. We're looking forward to senior day, our seniors have gone through a lot over the past 4 and sometimes 5 years. We're excited for Saturday, it's important for us, but more important to them. They're looking forward to getting there on the field. We have some not so healthy bodies, we need to find a way to get more healthy. We're excited to get back to work.
• We've got to make sure when we play on Saturday...when we went to Lincoln, we have a young team that got beat up pretty good, when you look at some kids that played well for you and they look a step or two slow, I saw some fatigue factors in there. You can't tackle or block well unless you have fresh legs. As a HC, I take responsibility for wins and losses, but I think our team was fatigued going into Lincoln.
• Roland has a leg injury and is out, ACL injury. He got an MRI, he got hurt in the walk-through. We have 21 on the injured list.
• MSU hasn't slipped, they just played a lot of good teams. We have our work cut out for us. We're excited for the opportunity to get back out there an play.
• The biggest thing offensively, coming off Lincoln and not playing well, we have beat up guys up front, we have young WR's.
• Ed Olson will practice today, Marek Lenkiewicz has a knee issue, and will not practice today.
• I think our kids played hard all year, we're getting everything out of them that we can. We need to figure out a way to get those legs back.
• I think they are a good team, and Dantonio is a good coach, every game is important (on asked why if he'd rather get their win last week). One way of the other, MSU is going to come in and play good. You know you'll get their best. It won't be any different, or tougher than last weekend when Tom Osborne ran the team out.
• Brendan Beal is out, he's getting an MRI today, for that kid, my prayers and thoughts go out to him. I sat down with him, and talked with him after the game. He's a persistent young man ,we hope for the best, that's all we can do.
• We're going through the same problems we went through at Southern and Northern, would have like to had another win or two in there. It didn't work out, but we still have games to play. The only thing that's different, at Northern IL they have 23 guys that didn't go through spring ball...I've never had this many injuries in a season, that's why I give the guys so much credit.
• We've been able to redshirt a large group of people, and our younger players have turned out to be pretty good. We have a chance at our 2nd true recruiting class. We've been through a lot in the 2 years I've been here.
• Coach Novak has a sign that says "the ones who stay, will be rewarded."
• We still have to get stronger, I wish we didn't have to play so many younger players, hopefully our time will come when we can run out 29 seniors on senior day. I talked to Bo Pelini before the game - he said they had 150 players on the roster, they've been doing it that way for years, they build their program with numbers, they don't turn anybody away, that's why they're where they're at. We got an education on Saturday of where we need to go and what we need to do.
• We've gotten to find out a lot about our younger kids. There's a lot of good players out there right now. You've got to get them in the boat, need to get them on signing day. We are so youthful, and we need to do a good job of what we get. I give it to our kids up front, they're playing their guts out.
• When asked if he would coach until he's 86, he replied - "I won't get the opportunity to, unless I win more games!" That will never happen again. I met him at a convention, and they asked him about retirement 15 years ago. He John Gagliardi said there's only 2 things I don't like about the game, I don't get to control injuries and officials.
• I wasn't going to answer any question about AJ, that's why we did the conference yesterday, but I told the kids we're moving forward. You know coach, you know who I am. All the seniors want to concentrate on playing football, they're a great group of kids that have been great to me. Players leave programs, and things happen. I feel bad about it, I really do. I'm responsible for 115 kids, kids that want to be there, that have gone through a lot, and that's where my focus will be. When I tell them how we're going to practice, they're going to be excited. Playing this game on Thanksgiving weekend, their families are going to be here. I really look for those kids to step up and really, really play hard.
• Just like anything, there's a negative and positive in our world. Yesterday, I got some unique emails from kids that never played on the team, that were thanking me. I think it's part of being part of a team. I had a kid that spoke to us, that talked about his time here at the U, he wasn't the star player, but just being on the team...there's something to be said for that. Darrel's played, and I think the thing you really miss about the game of football is not the football, it's the locker room, the stories, I think people like the opportunity to be a part of something. If I had the opportunity to put a uniform on an MN from where I came from, it would be a big deal.
