Jerry Kill press conference - Confidence building as well as academics

"Marcus Jones will not play the rest of the season, he will have surgery soon. He hurt his knee while playing. Things happen in college football. "

Crap

Kudos to Jerry Kill for the victory and keeping the Pig. He is demonstrating some coaching agility by restructuring mid season. The team is displaying resilience. And it looks like they are modifying their plans to meet the challenge of next week. This is the second week in a row where there is some information being conveyed that the coaches are managing the complexity better than in previous conversations with coach Kill.

Now, if we can just prepare the team for the unexpected at State this week.

Thanks Gopher Lady. Nice article.

Thanks GL. Missing practice to be at study hall is never a good thing to read, but I hope they are all getting their stuff done academic wise.

You are a beauty. Come a long way from comparing him to a baboon throwing feces. And this right after the seizure. His basic plan and approach hasn't altered since he got here so don't go acting like Jerry Kill beat Iowa because somehow he followed your infinite wisdom. This is just a step in the process of building a program. Since he really does know what he's doing better than you, being prepared to adapt as he gets to know what the players can do and getting them to buy into his plan is something he's done before. Do you honestly think Jerry Kill has strayed from his principles? Only a short-sighted, arrogant jackass wouldn't be able to see that. Athletics and the military are two places where there is often a tearing down period before you start to come together and that's what's going on, oh wise one.

Also, we very well may lose our remaining games since we are outmanned and there are going to be setbacks. The slimy thing you've done though is that you've set yourself to be able to start ripping him again because obviously he isn't following your counsel any more.

Good notes as I missed the presser today.

Another comment he made was 'I'm surprised you guys haven't asked me about this yet" alluding to the fact that there's a lot more going on....but we're not asking the right questions. This is not a good thing, but better to miss some practices than have guys flunk out, transfer, or lose scholarships.

I believe this guy is really doing things the right way.

+1,000!!!

OOG:

Quite a different position than you offered October 18.

“The AD needs to pull the contract and start a new search. The U deserves better than a staff that promotes itself as turn-around specialists when there is no evidence that this occurred at a significant university.”

Suggesting a coach not one-year into the job is a bold statement. Certainly such a dramatic flip-flop cannot be caused by a single win and a single press conference. Would you be so kind as to contrast your positions and what caused you to assume the most recent? Please annotate with relevant experiences that would cause anyone to give a damn about what you had to say 2-weeks ago (October 18) and why your most recent opinions have any relevancy whatsoever.

Re: OOG. A lot of us older fans have been disappointed decade to decade, hence the cynicism. The Gophers looked awful against New Mexico State and Michigan, pretty awful against Purdue and NDSU, but showed some flashes of the Kill offense and defense against Nebraska. Iowa was the first whole-game, all-team effort many expected but didn't see earlier. OOG is honest in admitting his lack of confidence, but is happy with the way things are going: seems reasonable. The rest of the schedule is tough, but maybe the Gophers will pull one more out (Illinois?). Anyway, Kill's system seems to be settling in and that is good news.

All I said now is simple: congratulations Coach for a good game, ya tosser!

If I start ripping him again, and I might, it should be for just cause in my elitist opinion. If the guy starts acting simian again, well, so be it. I'll just file it under 'Kill will be Kill'. I always will find it entertaining that the executive of the team needs to play the 4 star sergeant. That isn't following his principles, it is not allowing his sergeants to follow his principles, by bypassing them. Then, later on, he expresses that they haven't done their jobs. Well, it follows that when you are micromanaging, you are not communicating your message to the right people to help them prepare the team. It only follows that he couldn't resist getting into the tactics so much he forgot to plan for his coherent strategy, to master the unexpected. Far be it that it occurred after the fecal discussion again. Well, he has finally resettled into being the leader instead of the micro-manager, which has nothing at all to do with principles and everything to do with techniques of delegation and control. Funny, when he admitted that his coaches were not well prepared for some of the games during weeks he was on site doing his job, I wonder if you would admit that his penchant for training each player personally distracts him from truly managing strategy and conveying that strategy to coaches effectively during those days of game preparation. I think coach Kill can, will and is often distracted from his responsibilities as he apes around the practice facility.

He had a better prepared team against Iowa, which is no sure guarantee that they will sweep the rest of the table. And since you insist I can only be the a-hole, well, I accept your invitation to play the role with lust, gusto, and resilience. And, since I am only simian, myself, I will thow whatever crap around I can grab, most likely yours, since I am toilet trained.

So frustration means you get a pass for ridiculous over the top hyperbole and can just pretend you never said anything? Because some of the nonsense goes beyond "admitting a lack of confidence".

Haha you probably masturbate to Donkey Kong.

It certainly will be interesting to watch the rest of the season. Confidence goes a long way. They might not win another game this year, but it also wouldn't shock me if they won a couple of games. The biggest thing that Kill said after the game about Gray, "Today he became a quarterback." And I don't think that statement had a lot to do with his play on the field.

OOG, do you actually think that Kill changed his coaching approach drastically before the Iowa game and that is why they won? That's all I'm hearing from you. Kill is doing things the way he has always done things, and you are acting like his coaching staff isn't used to him doing what he is doing and that is hurting their preparations. Absolutely ridiculous.

I like the part where OOG will eat his crusty, neanderthal pooh covered crow in the next 18-30 months. That is, if he manages to make it here that long.

How do you know all of this? Is your son on the team?

The man often acts as a 4 star private. Do you get the reference? Do you get that he is the CEO of his organization and he spends his time in the minutia, taking away his perspective of what areas of practice need to be reinforced and which to discard. The man loves to coach 1 on 1 and give immediate feedback, which is an effective and old school technique. But, that technique fails to train for ambiguous circumstances, like the unplanned for event like an onside kick (see Iowa for its failure to react to that ambiguous situation.)

What turned me on to Jerry Kill? The contract length, frankly, it intrigued me. Although it has nothing to do with his ability to change the program quickly, the length of the contract told me what the U honestly expects it will take seven years to do the job. This was reinforced by Jerry Kill sending players to study hall instead of practice. You can't have team depth if the team can't get to the next football season.

Another strategic imperative of Jerry Kill is his reluctance to introduce anything to the game plan before it is ready. The onside kick was a perfect example of that. I have to give Kill kudos for waiting for it to be demostrable in practice before attempting it in a game. This also reinforces my belief that it takes a full 4 years to fully implement his playbook into the team. If he can't count on 22 seniors to be on the team, a significant segment of plays will never be seen on the field of play with any regularity or complexity.

I have fewer unknowns about Jerry Kill right now. I still have my concerns, but some of the difficulties with his leadeship style have evolved in my mind given some additional reflection about him in the last 2 weeks

If you don't think that is fair to Jerry Kill that I have changed my mind, so what! I don't care if you think it is fair or not. Fairness is quite an ambigous term and often depends on ones' vantage point.

Some things I am not suggesting here:

I don't think the contract is anything favorable or unfavorable to Joel Maturi. It takes more than Joel Maturi to offer a contract at the U. I do think the U did its due dilegence and when they offered more years, they did it to satisfy some unexplained internal needs.

I am not suggesting that this opinion is permenant. It may very well change as more information comes available.

You may yet get your chance. You and DPO are at the head of the list to see it happen. But, after I eat crow, I will buy the first round of beer.

This is one of the better things you've written in some time. I don't agree with some of it (I don't think a true CEO mindset is required for a coach to be successful) but you explain your thoughts in a logical way and without hyperbole. I sincerely doubt anyone is concerned about fairness when it comes to you changing your mind. For most people it's "WTF is going on?" given your previous statements.

No one's opinions should be permanent. Anyone with any intelligence should be willing to subject their opinions to review as often as is feasible/warranted and specifically when situations/facts change. But I think you'll find any changes better received by others if the first position you take doesn't involve outlandish statements based on nothing more than a gut feeling and barely half of one season of football.

You didn't answer me at all.
