Jerry Kill Preseason Press Conference, August 2, 2012

-Thanked everyone for coming on a beautiful afternoon

-The only way you can solve the questions of the team is to answer them on the field in practice

-They sold a strong vision a year ago, and they won’t change that now. The most important things as coaches is the continuity and the vision stays the same, and that everyone is comfortable with themselves.

-Brock Vereen, according to Kill, looks like his brother now after the weight training

-In order to make this a successful year, they have to continue to move the program forward. Nothing’s a quick fix.

-Won’t know about whether the talent level has increased until they get on the field and start working with them. On paper, some of the kids have shown they have talent, but they have to prove that.

-In terms of returning players, all of the players have improved based on the weight training program and offseason workouts. “They have mad themselves better, no question about that.”

-On MarQuis, kill said that he got better from the end of the fall to spring practice, and he has been a leader in the weight room. “He has to be very healthy going into camp, and stay that way.”

-The team has done what the coaches have asked them to do, from community service to academics to changing their body types. Because of that, they are cautiously optimistic about the upcoming season.

-On who will be the second string quarterback, Kill said they were trying to create depth at all positions, and they have done that at quarterback. “You prove yourself on the field, not anywhere else.” Also said if players don’t have any competition, they won’t be very good, and that they have competition at quarterback.

-Wide Receiver is a critical position for the upcoming season, and there will be a lot to watch there. They need dynamic players there that can go up and make a play, and they need to identify who’s going to be those playmakers. “I just know Devin Tufts is going to have a great year.”

-On redshirting decisions, Kill said that all works out as the practice season goes on. In order to compete for a championship long term, you have to make those types of decisions with both short term and long term in mind. “We’re going to do the best we can to redshirt as many we can.” They are maybe in a better position to redshirt more players this year than they were last year.

-Kill believes they have eight or nine offensive linemen that can play, and health will play an important role in who will play. Referenced “Durability and Liability” in regards to those decisions

-Said Philip Nelson had a strained hamstring, but should be ready to go for spring practice, and that everyone should be ready to play.

-On winning last year’s Illinois game to finish the season, Kill said that is a jump-start to the next season. Was glad the seniors were able to leave with a win, and that the strength and conditioning were able to use that to springboard into the offseason.

-They will have a team council meeting today to get input on who will be named team captains, and they will have younger players learning leadership roles that the torch will be passed on to

-Referred to the term “nowhere to hide,” and used that to explain the offseason workouts, as well as the weight room and academics

-On opening on the road and on Thursday night, Kill said he would like to play every game at home, but playing on the road is part of the game, and that playing on a Thursday is exciting because the Gophers will be opening up the college football season, and so he is not opposed to opening on a Thursday

-On his health, said that he felt fantastic. Sid asked if he’s mentally ok, Kill said he’s probably never mentally ok, which drew laughs. Someone from the crowd asked him to return the question to Sid…Kill politely declined, saying he was smarter than that.

-Every player on the roster is important, and cutting down to 105 is a tough thing to do. You hope things work themselves out through injuries, and then there are no reasons to cut players from the roster. Some just have to wait longer than others.

-All 105 players on the roster are counted on throughout the course of the season. Caleb Bak was used as an example, as he was not expected to be a factor on the team, and ended up starting five games. You never give up on a kid…kids mature at a different age.

-Only 10 seniors, so this team is full of youth.

Thanks AllTime. I couldn't get the live link to work so I appreciate your recap. Think we'll give you the DL65 award of the day!!
