Like Spaulding said in post #29...he was denied a mid season raise. They announced his replacement at the same time as his resignation. It was a negotiated thing long before the bowl game. Jerry also said his health just couldn't handle the grind of being a head coach.

New Mexico AD was pissed (ha) at Jerry's QB for abusing their facilities previously. Jerry punished the QB for his actions. The New Mexico AD was out of line. Jerry just made sure everybody knew. Not something his AD at New Mexico St would be upset with Jerry about.

I never heard exactly what the New Mexico AD actually did or heard it confirmed anywhere. Jerry wouldn't even say.
 


ol ‘jer is a ball coach. its who he is, it’s in his blood. he turns boys into men and football is his vehicle. he’s also a fix it guy and when ad’s and other coaches think their programs need fixin’ they call jer’. he’s a humble man who is know for his class as he tells us often. if it was up to him he’d be sippin’ margaritas on the beach in mexico, but a new coach came callin’ that some fixin’ is needed in nashville, so ol’ jer’ is packing up again. since retiring from football at minnesota, ol’ jer’ has demanded loyalty from the ad’s and coaches at kansas st, southern illinois, rutgers, va tech, tcu, new mexico st, and now vandy. but this is never about jer’, it’s about the boys who need mentoring.
 

He's "become" a petulant man-child. As he ages, the damages to his brain from the epilepsy accelerate the normal breakdown of cognitive and emotional control. He can't keep up the facade that we all carefully cultivate.

When it used to take years for people to know the "real Jerry," now it takes months.

I don't recall the exact details but both bowl teams were supposed to have the same access to practice facilities. The host AD denied Jerry access to the indoor facility but granted it to the opponent as well as you know Jerry...some other perceived slights the opponent received benefits for that he did not.

Jerry may have been misinformed or just trying to drum up controversy.

Both parties involved called it a misunderstanding and said relations were in a much better place as of Monday, after they spoke to discuss what was happened and said at the New Mexico Bowl over the weekend.

On Sunday, ESPN reported a rebuttal from University of New Mexico athletic director Eddie Nunez, who told ESPN that New Mexico permitted the use of its facilities to both teams, as it does for the bowl game every year. Nunez told ESPN that New Mexico, “would never stand in the way,” of a participating team’s preparation.

Nunez told ESPN that it was “both misguided and offensive” to insinuate that New Mexico would block the use of its facilities as retaliation for the Pavia incident. Nunez told ESPN that was “a bowl decision” to have police present at UNM’s practice facility on Thursday and that New Mexico does not handle facilities operations or decisions during bowl week other than loaning out its facilities.

Insightful post. Thanks for putting it up.

I think the thing with Kill is that he has always been hyper-competitive but at the same time has this chip on his shoulder that just seems to get bigger and bigger. Some folks play contract bridge. Jerry plays full-contact bridge.

The ever-growing list of resentments combined with likely some loss of brain function has just wiped away the "Aw shucks" country boy charm that when combined with his solid teaching of fundamental football made him a pretty good coach. He's had a string of rough hands dealt to him over the past couple of decades, but he just can't seem to get perspective on that. He's lucky to still be vertical, but whatever gratitude he has shown for that has just gotten lost.
