Jerry Kill deserving of B1G Coach Of The Year

This first full class of Jerry Kill players drafted is proof of why his fellow coaches voted him COY.

There is no doubt the coaching staff can develop NFL caliber players. We can expect players drafted every year for as long as he is coach.

I don't think this will go unnoticed by recruits, their families, and their HS coaches like the Huff twins' mom personally delivering them to Coach Kill.

NFL draft, APR, improved recruiting, winning seasons. We have entered a Golden period of Gopher football.
 

Great year no doubt. But not a better job than the guy who won the big ten east with the backup quarterback and then the big ten and national championship with the third string.

If the gophers had won the west I could see the argument. But the gophers were essentially 4th in the conference with a loss to illinois and close victories over purdue and northwestern.
Great year but I don't think he should have been Coach of the Year.
 

Coach Kill's two deeps far outplayed their recruiting rankings. OSU only modestly. By that measure it isn't even close. Kill gets the win.

Cardale wasn't a scrub two star coached up to lead the team to victory. Nobody is going to make a movie about the 2014 Buckeyes.

There's more to it than outplaying your recruiting rankings. How anyone could argue that anybody except Urban not only did the best coaching job in the conference but in the country as well this year is beyond me. OSU had to replace 4 offensive lineman and the progress that that unit made from beginning to end is astonishing. Plenty of helmet schools that recruit at or better than OSU like say Texas for example don't even have a starting QB halfway as good as any of those guys.

Urban did what he's supposed to do. I'm not taking anything away from him by saying it wasn't the most impressive coaching performance. He took talented players and beat equally talented teams. What's interesting to me is when teams loaded with talent eg Florida, Texas, USC (before the scholarship sanctions really bit the last couple years) can be flat terrible some weeks. The offensive linemen all had talent in spades. They are by and large the best of the best on paper.

If Urban is coach of the year then the kid who inherits his dad's business and doesn't run it into the ground is entrepreneur of the year.

Jerry took unheralded players and beat significantly more talented (on paper) players in several games. That's more impressive to me. What's nice is we can all have our opinions and be right in our own minds. Urban didn't win the award. Jerry did.

Urban wasn't even suppose to make the 4 team playoff let alone win it and was even a vegas underdog to Wisconsin in the Big Ten championship. I might also add that OSU was a 6-7 team the year before he took over and literally doubled their win total a year later.
 



The fact they were dogs to Wisconsin actually argues for Urban underperforming as a coach most of last season. The fact they turned it on the last 3 games and played like they're supposed to doesn't mean he's coach of the year. It means he had the team doing what they should have been doing all season. That team was a machine the last 3 games and it was a signt to see. Props to them for having the discipline to play to their ability as a team.

The majority of predictions last preseason had OSU taking the Big Ten and by extension likely making the playoff. Some had MSU which only illustrates their predictions are colored by recent history. On paper OSU recruits >> MSU recruits and we've all heard in aggregrate that matters.

I could (and did) tell you OSU would roll over an overrated Oregon squad. Alabama was clearly down from their usual standard in a down SEC. Florida State was extremely lucky to be there. Jimbo Fisher didn't make the most of his talent either. A different argument for a different day.

"Coach of the Year" seems to mean different things to different people. There may be a definition somewhere as to what the criteria is but to me it should be much more than just how many games you won or lost. It is about the character of the man and the program including academics, values, and instilling those traits into your players. Jerry has done those things as well as anybody. The fact that many college coaches have recognized coach Kill as the coach that they would trust with for their own son speaks volumes. With Jerry you will get better "life skills" that can use the rest of your life. Those are priceless.

I'm in the camp that thinks Meyer deserved it but I can understand why Kill got it. Your knock on Meyer is that he did what he was supposed to do. Honestly when you look back on our season for the most part Kill did exactly what he was supposed to do as well. Looking at who we played and how all their seasons turned out the only game we won that was surprising was the Nebraska game, because it was in Lincoln. At the time the Michigan game was a bit of a surprise but looking at how the season played out it would have been disappointing to have lost to that Michigan team.

We were a nice story and caught people off guard en route to finishing second in our division. OSU ran the table in the conference, won the conference championship and the National Championship....to me Meyer was the easy choice but like I said I can understand why Kill got it.
 

They both have a case and were deserving. It was voted on. No controversy here.

Many times these awards can be popularity contests. I'm sure there are people that don't care for Urban Meyer. Jerry Kill is generally considered very likable among his peers. I'm not sure if there are coaches that hate Meyer, but I can see why he could rub some people the wrong way. There's no doubt this probably plays into it for some.
 

It's just possible the voters know something our resident Urban apologists do not.
