Jerry Kill and Game Clock Management

The one thing is that things don't have to go straight from keeping the foot on the gas and going into a shell. Too many times this team has completely switched from one thing to the other with no in between. I think if they still run their offense but maybe eliminate some of the deeper or more risky routes, they can still be productive. When you change completely you remove any momentum you had and make it almost impossible for the offense to counter if the other team does start making a come back.

However, all that depends on their confidence in Nelson. It could be that they still aren't overly confident that he can make the correct reads. If so, then I understand. It's just that history (Mason) has shown that "insurmountable" leads aren't always insurmountable. If Carter hadn't had the series he had, and Purdue had scored that drive, things could have gotten a little uncomfortable...

Great point reminding us of the oft forgotten middle ground. I still think whne you are utterly dominating a team, you should make them make you change the way you are playing. A feel like a lot of the concerns can be alleviated by just reminding some of the players (especially the freshman quarterback) that we are in a good spot, its ok to throw it away if the pass isn't there, don't fumble the football trying to reach for a few extra yards, but we are going to keep basically the same gameplan going until the other team shows us they can stop it (or until the other team shows us they can score against it if we are on the other side of the football).

I wasn't talking about Purdue specifically. But I did phrase my post poorly. I meant that it leaves them in a position where they have a prayer. I would rather us keep the peddle down and leave them with no hope at the end than allow them to slowly get close to set themselves up for a shot at the miracle quick score, onside kick, another quick score sequence.

I know it's just a difference of opinion. . .

But if you're assuming Purdue is going to be able to do what they want, they have a chance in either scenario.

What I am saying is that you didn't like the prevent and the vanilla play calling in the second half and it would have been possible but miraculous for Purdue to score, get an onside kick and score again. However, it would have also been possible for Coach Kill to come out aggresive in the second half and gotten burned. Nelson could have thrown a pick 6. We could have blitzed at the wrong time and Purdue could have had the score within 14 going into the 4th quarter. That scenario is also possible. It would have been flukey for so much to have gone wrong while being aggresive but probably not anymore flukey than your score and onside kick scenario (with the time left).

Regardless of which strategy you employ, Purdue would have a chance at a miraculous come back. The question is. . .which is more likely?

I hate the Mason-Like Conservative 2nd Halves...

I'd really not care about running the game out as soon as possible if it weren't for how easy Purdue was able to score in the 2nd Half...

Speaking of Clock Management....be sure to turn your clocks back tonight.

I'm turning mine back to 1960-1961

I was there. I always remember after the game we decided to go back to my sister's house through the mountains to avoid the traffic. It was dusk and I looked down into the valley. What I saw was a map of the freeway system were each freeway had above it a smog cloud above it. That's when I realized this was a problem.

Speaking of clock management - what's with running down to 4 seconds left in the first half, and having 2 timeouts in your back pocket ?? Running around spiking the ball instead of using them. Baffling.
