Jeff Jagodzinski!!!!! Hire Him Now!!

The list could include a lot of people, no particular order, and I am not endorsing any or all of them. These are likely names we'll hear:

Jeff Jagodzinki
Paul Chryst
Kevin Sumlin
Mike Leach
Al Golden
Dan McCarney
Craig Bohl
Jim Leavitt
Dewayne Walker
Leslie Frazier
Scott Linehan
Bob Nielson

There are others I'm likely forgetting.

I don't think we do anything until later in the season if the wheels are really coming off, but I'm glad you have Nielson on the list. There's a lot of precedent for successful DII and I-AA coaches stepping up to I-A and having success. He has been successful everywhere he's been so it's not unreasonable to think he could do it here.

Sumlin and Jagodzinski are clearly the best of the coaches who would likely come here. There are others who may be better but I doubt they would coach a college team.

Personally, I think Sumlin is the #1 guy. He's fairly young, is coaching an up and comming program from a smaller school and is having success. I think a coach like that is what the Gophers need. If Sumlin can get decent talent to Houston, I think he could get even better talent here and judging by the success he's had there I think his coaching skills are good as well.

Jagodzinski is good as well but I question if he's the best guy for the job if he's looking to coach in the NFL. We need a quality coach who wants to be here longterm.

Get better talent here? He doesn't have to go out of the state to get quality recruits. He's picking up recruits that Texas, Texas Tech, and Texas A&M all passed on and want to stay in Texas for college. I think it would be easier to sell Houston to a kid from Texas than it would be to sell Minnesota and the Big Ten.

True to an extent. While geography might help him there, in Minnesota he has a BCS program and a new stadium plus a chance to start. I think he will still be able to recruit TX kids pretty well from up here which is another good reason he'd be a good fit.

I also think he instantly have more credability than Brewster given his success at Houston which will help recruiting.

The Gophers have a lot going for them with the new stadium being in a BCS conference and the fact that there will be playing time available. You insert a good coach with a good history and resume and this program can be a factor in the Big Ten again in a fcouple years.

That's an interesting name. He's not that well thought of in Nebraska, but I've been told he got fired for one game. Still he's done a good job in Fargo, but he's said from the start this is a stepping stone for him. He didn't think he was going to stay longer than the 5 year transition to D-1.

This would also clear the way for Kevin Feeney to try an take over the NDSU program. A lot of people from the area think he's the best coach in the state. Maybe Feeney is the next, next gopher coach.

As for the other names cross for all the NFL guys now. This job isn't going to steal any NFL head coach, DC, OC. Even if it did I don't like the recent track record of NFL coaches in college.

Jeff Jagodzinki is interesting because I don't think anyone will give him a DC, or OC job again so the only way he leaves is for a head coaching job. But like someone said Illinois will most likely make a play for him at the end of the season and I don't see the U getting into a bidding war.

Don't you guys think there are way too many red flags with Jagodzinski?

I believe the gophers currently employ that person.

Wasn't that the same guy who brought Julius Peppers to North Carolina?

I definitely do. He would be a horrible hire.
We need stability. Someone who may possibly both succeed AND be here longer than 2 seasons. Most of those who disagree don't seem to have a firm grasp on exactly how little one or two decent seasons helps a program like ours in the long run.

Replace Sumlin and Houston with Wacker and TCU.

Houston was 46th in the country in defense in 2007. With Sumlin, they were 100th in 2008 and 111th in 2009.

I agree with you RedPoo, he seems like a guy enamored with the NFL and he seems like someone who hasn't gotten along with the people he has worked with.

Agreed, I'm not interested in a coach with a good offense and a terrible defense. Get a strong defense and you don't need as much offense. It's much easier for a good defense to protect a lead than it is for a good offense to protect the lead. When the offense fails, it just means you punt. But when the defense fails, it costs you points.

No to Jags!

My wife is a BC alum so I see the eagles more than most and Coach Jags is not the answer. His only two years at the Heights his QB was Matt Ryan and they lost 5 games his SR season.

He's just another Brewsterish type of coach except that he can't recruit as well. That's why the AD fired him. He realized he should have given the job to the D coordinator Spazziani (who has the job now) and the Jets thing was an easy out.
