Jeff Goodman -Big Ten Preview

I just shrug these predictions off now. These are the same people that predicted Purdue would lose to Siena in the 1st round last year. These are the same people that said they would get blown out by Texas A&M in the 2nd round. These are the same people that said they would get destroyed by Duke in the Sweet 16 yet the game was tied with 10 minutes left. Losing Hummel, Kramer, and Grant is tough but they've added some very good Freshman and have a lot more bulk down low to help out JJ. How many times have we seen an All-American one man show carry a team all season? Purdue has 2 such players.

Myron Medcalf from the Strib predicted Purdue to finish 5th in the Big Ten behind the Gophers (which is fine) but when he put out his Top 25 he had Purdue 13th or 14th and the Gophers unranked. Which is it?

Purdue's schedule sets up nicely with a so-so NC slate and then unlike the Gophers, the Big Ten schedule is soft at the beginning with an opportunity to start 4-0 before coming to the Barn in January.

A repeat Big Ten title isn't completely out of the question but they will need some luck and both JJ and Moore need to play out of their minds most of the season.

Dear College Basketball Fans,

Please feel free to doubt Purdue at every turn. Use any excuse to write the Boilermakers off. The moment they start to struggle say the only reason Purdue was any good the past few years was because Robbie Hummel made them. Feel relieved that Chris Kramer is no longer around to defend your best player, and therefore it will be much easier to score on Purdue now. In fact just ignore the idea that Purdue still has two potential 1st team All-American seniors.

Sincerely,

The entire Purdue Basketball Family

These talking heads are just going out on a limb, the coaches poll and AP poll show a lot more respect to the Boilers. I do think losing Hummel brings Purdue back to the pack a little bit but fifth is a stretch. It should be an incredibly fun year of Big Ten basketball though.

Dear Purdue fans. What happened with Hummel sucks. You went into the season with National Title hopes that now appear to be dashed. Clearly understand that sucks. But now you're faced with the prospect of only being a top 15-20 team that many still think can win the toughest conference in America. Buck up. Stop playing the disrespect card because some people don't think you'll win the conference without your best player. Most of us are happy to see a ranking next to our team and injuries are part of the game. The fact that Purdue is still a top 15 team in most people's eyes despite losing your best player and the conferences defensive player of the year last year shows that most people still respect your program and your team. Now stop crying

Thanks oleboy, you saved me some time with your post. MNboiler seems to forgot his team being unable to score more than 45 points against MSU and MN after Robbie went down. It's a big blow to your team.

Why do we have 2 Purdue fans on our board all the time? I don't care if you live in Minnesota and neither does the internet.

I don't feel like going over this again but if you must - YES - I am a Purdue fan, however, I was born and raised here in the Twin Cities as a Gopher fan but just went to school at Purdue. My wife is a U of M alum and my family has had hockey and football season tickets for years. I am a huge fan of the Big Ten in general and choose to follow both teams closely.

Sue me.

Sorry, I just don't understand being a fan of teams that compete against each other. You pick a team and stick with them.

Because this is actually what I like about the basketball board. We have Wisconsin, MSU, Illinois, Purdue, OSU, etc. fans that post here and it isn't like the football board where they get harassed or where they do the harassing. It actually works well and is nice to have the opinions of people not wearing maroon and gold glasses sometimes and makes the conversation that much better considering it seems to happen in a civil way. It is very refreshing to see that, at least before the games start, we can actually talk about college basketball without it being a huge pee contest.

Following a team closely and being a fan are not the same thing. I am a Purdue fan first and foremost.

1. Purdue
2. whoever is playing Notre Dame
3. whoever is playing Indiana
4. Minnesota

That's fine but I don't understand why the Purdue fans need to whine to us about Basketball writers picking their team to finish 4th. I think they need to remove the black and old gold sunglasses and realize why someone would pick them to finish 5th.

To be fair, I kind of asked for Purdue fans to whine in my OP. I do like all the other posters on this board. We've got some very solid contributors without the trash talk.

Picture this: The Gophers have not one, not two, but THREE All-American candidates and are a clear favorite to win the Big Ten and go to the Final 4. Then all of a sudden, the best all around player of those 3 goes down with a season ending injury. Despite still having 2 AA candidates and the entire NC schedule to get acclimated with the loss everyone says the Gophers are nothing more than a middle of the pack team. I've been reading this board for a long time, back before it split and there would be plenty of whining if this were the case.

I'm not saying Purdue should be ranked in the Top 10 or be picked to win the Big Ten. I just think it's a convenient trendy pick to assume Purdue will suffer a huge drop off despite having some very talented newcomers and one of the better young coaches in the country.

If and when this happens to the Gophers, I'll be sure to find a Boilers website and go on there to complain about it.

Question for the Board... Are we all full of $hit and not knowing where and what will happen, I make no predictions, I let the games play out. Gophers rule. Boilers drool. Beer is cool. I am a tool.

Didn't you just make a prediction in the "Predict the Score" thread less than 2 minutes ago? Predictions are fun, what else are we going to talk about in the offseason?

I also enjoy beer.

Yep, I picked the Gophers over Winona State.

The one sure thing is...We do not know the outcome of any game, we guess and sound intelligent. One does not to be intelligent to enjoy beer. After all, life is good if one has enough beer. When my fridge gets to the 1/2 way point, I resupply.

Go for it. I'll even give you the link

or

Yes. Doing that would make a lot of sense.

Look, discussing other teams is fine. But it should be in the context of the Gophers, not about the other team. Remember, this is a Gophers fan board.

Coming on a Gophers board to complain about Purdue being bad-mouthed is about as sensible as suing McDonald's for making your kids fat.

Enough about Purdue. This is a Gopher board...let's talk about the Badgers. I'll eat my hat if the Badgers finish in 6th place in the Big 10. Now I'll grant that my hat is made of bacon, but still...

Seriously, it's kind of nice knowing that each year talking heads are going to assume that the Badgers will fall off because of players graduating and then being surprised when it doesn't happen.

That said, this year is going to be really interesting in the Big 10. I think that the two teams that have the fewest questions are Illinois and Michigan State. Ohio State, Purdue, Minnesota and Wisconsin all have some pretty big questions to answer and I think that each of them could finish anywhere from 1st to 6th in the conference.

Two different polls. Two separate questions. I was asked to predict the conference's order of finish by the Big Ten. But my job was to rank the top 25 teams for the AP's preseason poll.

I had Purdue at No. 3 before the Hummel injury. But I still think the Boilermakers deserve to be ranked right now until they prove otherwise.

I picked the Gophers over Purdue in the Big Ten because I believe they will finish ahead of Purdue at the conclusion of the regular season.

The Gophers will have a lot of opportunities to crack the top 25 during the nonconference season.

1. I wouldn't have said anything if Gold Vision hadn't said anything in the OP, but because he did I decided to responed.

2. What do you expect Purdue fans to do after the loss of Hummel? Pack up the tent and say "Well, that was a fun run while it lasted." Of course we are going being playing the disrespect card. And personally I hope all the people who doubted Purdue after Hummel tore is ACL(again) are eating some serious crow at the end of the season because that means Purdue has won big. BTW didn't Minnesota play the disrespect card last year with the warm-ups that had respect printed on them?

3. Enough with the fact that Purdue played like total and complete crap vs the Gophers last year in the BTT. Purdue was not even close to being that bad, if you truely think they were that bad you need to watch more college basketball.

4. I was also born and raised in Minnesota but I am at Purdue now. When anyone here, at Purdue, asks if I am a Minnesota fan, I proudly say, "Yes, they are my second favorite college team after Purdue." Then explain to them in Minnesota the U is the only D1 school and that everyone is fan of the Gophers it is just a matter of how big of fan somebody is.

5. The reason I do post on this board is three-fold. 1. I enjoy the intelligent posts about college basketball that you don't find at most sites. 2. I want to know how Minnesota fans are feeling about there Gophers. 3. I try to provide some good breakdown of Purdue basketball when asked along with providing tips on what to do when visiting Purdue.

How do you feel about your "#1 MSU vs. #2 Purdue" prediction now?

I think most people still have Purdue in the top 25 but not the top 5 like before. In the Big Ten there most likely will be a fine line between the teams that finish 1-5. You have to admit losing Hummel is a big blow and will cost you a few wins in the Big Ten and a few places in the conference. Do you think people would pick the Heat to win the NBA if Lebron went down for the year? You lost a guy on your team that was second in scoring and rebounding. He was your best 3 point shooter and automatic from the free throw line. Look at the how well Moore played in the four games after Hummel went down. He shot 30% from the field and the team went 2-2. This is a Gopher board we are allowed to whine and get to every year when we hear ESPN tell us Tubby will be leaving. Purdue played like crap against Minnesota in the BTT, the second half of the game at the Barn and in their biggest game of the year vs MSU at home. Leave it up to the players to play the disrespect card.

Purdue looked horrible without Hummel in the BTT and the tourney they only looked ok (IMO)...

You have to understand how good that Purdue thrashing in the BTT felt to us Gopher fans, we just aren't going to forget that quickly. I enjoyed every second of that butt effing bloodbath.

P.S. we are glad to have you Purdue rubes on the board, makes for good banter.

P.S.S. Matt Painter looks like one of Gordon Geicko's pubes.

It's so nice that we have two resident Purdue fans to whine about their rankings and predictions nonstop. Why do we want to hear the same argument every day that Purdue is overlooked? We get it, Purdue has two POTENTIAL All American candidates so you guys think they deserve more respect. Preseason predictions/rankings mean absolutely nothing. Save your whining for bracketology time when it actually matters.

1. Is Purdue be better this year with Robbie Hummel. Yes. But I am still hopeful that many things break the Boilers way this year the athletic department will be raising banner number 23 and maybe 24 up to the Mackey rafter next year.

2. It was #1 Purdue vs #2 MSU.

3. That was before God decided to smite Hummel ACL(again) so I reserve the right to change that predication.

4. I understand that watching the Gopher beat the crap out of the Boilers was very enjoyable for most you but what annoys me is when some act like that is how bad Purdue really was last year.

5. I literally laughed out loud with the Matt Painter/Gordon Gecko comment.

I watched part of Purdue's exhibition - I went in thinking they could still be a top-25 and possibly Sweet 16 team, came out thinking they aren't. Sorry. I don't think it's going to happen for Purdue this year. Painter would have to do a masterful job to get this team back to the Sweet 16.

When they lost Hummel last year, they still had a very good senior leader in Kramer, and they had a quality senior guard in Keaton Grant who moved into the starting lineup. Now the replacement for Hummel is gone (and none of the possible replacements has had the career that Grant had prior to him being put in the starting lineup), plus they have to replace Kramer as well. Purdue this year is IMO like a Ponzi scheme - they look good now because they're rated highly and they haven't played anyone for real so no one has had a close look at the books, but they will collapse when the going gets rough. I think OSU, MSU, Illinois, Minnesota and Wisconsin will all finish ahead of Purdue this year.
