Izzo: Dwayne Stephens has been involved in a coaching search

Even if we didn't get Tyus and Reid as a result of hiring this guy, maybe it would at least mean neither would go to MSU. That could be another silver lining, make sure those two end up outside of the conference.

Purdue's football coach Darrell Hazell is African-American.
You're right. Maybe I misheard and whoever asked the question was just talking about basketball, but I swear I heard him ask about football and basketball. If I'm right (which is unlikely), Teague and whoever asked that question erred.

Edit: Found Nadine's notes: "No black B10 FB or Bball coaches - does this enter your mind? Teague - it always does. We hired Quincy Lewis, and want to continue to hire."

Also worth noting: if Teague was in Indy last weekend, could have spoken with Stephens. #Gophers

Michigan State fans perspective on Dwayne Stephens + one bit of Gopher info

There is a donor currently sitting on $20 million who was refusing to donate for the new facility as long as Tubby was coach. Money talks. By the way, it's more than just Tyus Jones that was killing Tubby. There are 3 big time 2014 guys who are out there who Tubby was going to strike out on, one of whom, Reed Travis, was MSU bound as long as Tubby stayed coach (and will be depending on who the Gophs hire) and many in MN say that Travis has the biggest upside of the "big 3" 2014's.

The quoted part I pulled from the thread was posted about 23 minutes. The person who posted the above quote has over 6500 + posts at that site. Just found it interesting. So which one of you tightwads is sitting on $20M?

Travis is a nice player, but I don't know anyone who says he has the most upside of the 3.

I wish it was me so I could do the same thing.

No one that knows what they're talking about. I love Travis' game and would be ecstatic if we get him, but no way in hell does he have the most upside.

Not sure of the original intent, but my guess is they meant Travis is likely a 4 year player which could be more valuable than 1 or 2 years of Tyus and Rashad. Again, that is only my best guess at what they were talking about.

Don't coaches like to have both? Smoking hot two year talent and a baseline of four year leadership?

I'd love all three or any of the three. They are all great talents and we'd be lucky to get any one of them. I was just trying to guess what the MN poster actually meant on the MSU board because no one believes Travis is an overall better prospect than Vaughn and Tyus.

Have you been scouting them? So you would know more? Thought so.

Haha what? More than who? If you've seen all 3 play extensively against good competition (like I have) it is not hard to figure out who has the least upside. Again, I'm a big fan of Travis and really want him on the team, but it's just reality.

If Stephens is the choice and the main recruiter of Jones and Travis, you can sure bet Izzo himself will be on the next flight to MPLS to talk with those two.

He's already made all sorts of trips to the Cities to visit them. Last time Flip picked him up from the airport and drove him to the game.

@gophersnow: Mich St asst Dwayne Stephens' name took flight after @joerexrode tweeted he was looking into a job. MN seems too big for him. Am I wrong?

Go Gophers!!

Explains why the presser has to be on THURSDAY... [okay that was snark]

If Doogie's info about a big announcement coming Thursday is correct ( and it very well might not be ) , what is the reasoning for waiting until then if Stephens or anyone has already been hired ?

I would like Stephens now more after reading the Sparty board

Pompous MSU posters, like our program is not good enough for a rising assistant coach, to Sparty fans a big middle finger.
Wounds Izzo, helps our recruiting of the Big 3 in Minnesota, let's get this guy.

Jerk the media around - pull the wings off flies?

Nice of him to do that for the guy who is recruiting against the U.

The worst was Izzo stepping in and telling Stephens he can't take the job because Tubby Smith is his friend.

I'd agree generally, but it's hard to say when they are 16 years old.

Tyus is so uniquely skilled, but I'd imagine that Travis is a better pure athlete.
