Simple question, is Mortell good enough to make it in the NFL? What do you guys think.

If he punts like he did in the last game he is. Showed how valuable he was to the Gophers when they pulled him in the Michigan game. I am pretty sure someone will give him a shot.

He has the same career average as Locke but the guys rushing him have less speed and athleticism. I do not know if Locke has a twitter account that is as funny as PM. I hope he makes somebodies roster. No experts thought Marcus Shekels would last this long in the NFL. Go Gophers!

I don't think so, but I'd love to see it. He's definitely a NFL, world class personality.

He'll get a shot. Always hard to tell with punters. Some guys really elevate their games once that's all they are doing. He was pretty inconsistent this year, but when he's on, he's pretty good.

He was selected holder of the year by the committee of 1,involved with the community. Would get by "cheap" for a couple three years, yeah he has a chance.

He needs to improve his consistency. If he kicks like he did yesterday yes, if he kicks like he did against Michigan, no.

I think he is going to have a tough time making it in the NFL. He may have fineness but he really doesn't have a strong leg. His best shot is as a holder.

Won't be drafted but should at least be given a shot by someone. Has shown he is an exceptional holder. Very proficient at pinning teams deep. Can sometimes boom kicks but was too inconsistent this year.

When punting from mid-field and attempting to pin the receiving team deep - YES. When punting from deep in his own territory and needing a booming punt with lots of hang time - NO.

If he can find his form from last year he'll punt in the NFL for years. If he punts like this year, the answer is no. I actually argued with my wife about this because she said he was having a great year and pointed at his average. I agreed he had a good average, but noted that college stats are only punt yards and don't record net yards, which from my untrained and unofficial eye went way down this year. He seemed to have a lot of line drive punts that were very returnable. We agreed to disagree.

One question - I was wondering if he had a year of eligibility left when I saw he had 0 punts in 2012. However, his stats show him playing in two games, having a 5 yd pass and a 7 yd run. Does anyone remember if he was holding all the kicks for whatever two games he played or was he brought in specifically for fakes? Were they fakes or botched holds? Those are his only stats for rushing and passing, so no fakes (or botched punts/holds) by him the last three years after two in his freshman year (I'm assuming he wasn't inserted as a position player for one play each game).

Can't remember last time I saw a roster player being a holder solely.

And you never will, teams can't afford to do that. Multiple players can be holders - usually quarterbacks or another specialist, but not someone solely for that purpose. Long snappers are a different story. Despite all the funny stuff with "Holder of the Year" Peter is nothing special compared to others in terms of holding, although he sounds like a great guy!

It is next to impossible to project which kickers will make it from college to the NFL. Great college kickers never make it to the next level whereas a guy like Blair Walsh who goes 15 for 23 as a senior gets drafted in the 6th round.

If Mortell gets with a good coach and really works on things he could potentially make a roster next year but the odds are probably against him to some degree. I really hope he makes it to the next level to see what he would do from a community service standpoint. His specialist Christmas fundraiser was amazing, imagine what he could do as an NFL player and not just a college player.

Peter's biggest issue is his leg strength. Blair Walsh had a great Junior Year if I recall and an inconsistent Senior Year. The one thing that was consistent was his leg strength. We are still seeing some of that inconsistency today. Peter was excellent at pinning opponents inside the 20 but struggled when he needed to boom a punt for yardage and hang time. If he can improve there, who knows? I agree that he is someone to be celebrated for his off the field work. It would be nice if all of the pro athletes took a similar approach.

I'm a huge Peter Mortell fan, but he was way too inconsistent this year. I doubt he's an NFL punter, I'd love to see him get a chance though.

The Vikings could have used the holder of the year today.

I would certainly invite Peter to camp at this point. He's worth a look.
