Is Nate Wolters an NBA Player?

There was a lot of buzz about this guy during last season's build up to March Madness. 21ppg and leading his team to the top of the "Summit" and all.

But after closer examination, I noticed he actually had a poor shooting season, especially from 3 point range...He only shot 24% last season from beyond the Arc and 44 % overall....Not exactly NBA material for a shooting or combo guard. But this year, he's off to a better start and has his shooting numbers up to 42 from 3 and 49 overall.

Does anybody see him making a roster and carving out a Fred Hoiberg type career?
 

He's going to get drafted. His success in the NBA is still very much up in the air.
 

Don't listen to me, because I've been wrong before, but I don't think he is. I think he's just a super college player. That said, it would not surprise me if he did get drafted, especially if his team wins a game or two in the NCAA's.
 

Excellent college player, would have been great playing for the Gophers, will have a long, prosperous professional basketball career, not in the NBA however, rather at a high-level in Europe. My $.02.
 

wolters is a good player but i dont think averaging over 20 points a game in the summit makes a guy a lock to play in the nba. how many guys in the big ten could do what wolters is doing? i think the gophers alone have 4 guys for sure that could get the points wolters is getting and our guy sare better defenders imo. wolters deserrves the hype he has received but i will be surprised if he gets drafted

His sophomore year was better than last year (in terms of offensive production). This year he's been insanely good... should get good looks as a 2nd-rounder or undrafted FA by the NBA in the summer.

On the 24% and 44% figures above - you're double-dinging him. His 2FG shooting was quite good (over 51%).

Pretty good size for a PG... his feel for the game and the intangibles are what gives him a chance. He just gets it done.

He is listed on that mock. That said, I don't think he is athletic enough to defend in the NBA. He would be a small 2 or a big 1, but he isn't quick enough to play and defend the 1 at that level. I think he will have a nice post-college career if he is willing to go abroad. His work ethic is undeniable though and he is a very smart player.

I think he would be a better overall player if he was on a better team. He is asked to do everything and play every minute, not many D1 guys are expected to do that
 

I have a feeling he'll play extremely well tonight in front of family and fans....I expect SD ST to cover the 14.5 and maybe even hold a lead at HT before losing by 11.

If he plays...he rolled his ankle last night. Sure glad I bought tickets this morning...

According to SDSU writer @TerryVandrovec, Nate Wolters turned his ankle in practice yesterday. Questionable for tonight's #Gophers game.

J.B. Bauer and Amelia tweeted it today. Also in a game write-up I read somewhere. I hope he plays, I always enjoy watching him. Very composed and well-rounded.
 



That sucks, I was excited to see him play in person tonight.
 

I hope he plays, I was looking forward to seeing the hometown kid.
 

That's pretty sad for him to miss this game of all games if he misses it or is limited...Serious question: Does this make Minnesota HUGE value giving 14.5?
 

Wolters will play minutes in the NBA, he's high on every mock draft board.. will he be good? maybe.

Wolters is 6'4" 190 and can play either guard spot in college. Not an athlete. Has good basketball sense. Strong mid range game. Struggled from 3 last year, but has been a strong shooter from there in other seasons. Kind of reminds me of Maryland's Vasquez. Vasquez is bigger but had the same knocks of lack of athleticsm comming out. Got drafted bottom of first but now is a starter for N Orleans.

Hoiberg might be a better comparison. Was Hoiberg an athlete?

Hoiberg was a decent athlete early in his career but definitely a liability defensively by his last few seasons. He could score tho and often gave the Wolves clutch 3's in their run to the western conf finals in 04. I imagine Wolters would wind up that kind of player.
 

NBA? We'll find that out next year, or maybe a year or two after that. What I do know is he's a fantastic college player. Looking forward to seeing Wolters go up against all the Gophers' athletic guards/wings. Seeing Wolters is one of the few things I've anticipated with this mostly non-descript nonconference home schedule.
 

You think Wolter's is jacked for tonight...??? then Austin and Andre are both just as jacked to shut him down. Wolter's has a frustrating night and struggles to score 14.

Line has moved to 21 in some places since Wolters is questionable. Saying he's a game-time decision as of now.
 

This sucks if he can't play. There's no chance it'll be a competitive game if Wolters doesn't play. Hope he heals in the next few hours.
 


I want Wolters at 100% so when Austin shuts him down, it is full strength versus full strength.
 

I want a 30 point win. I don't care who plays.

In Wolter's "defense" I do not believe his lack of quickness in defending the 1 or 2 will hinder him that much, as the NBA's defensive quality is horrendous. Most good point guards in the NBA will simply turn the corner on a pick n roll due to poor play on behalf of the defender stepping out.

How won't it hinder him? NBA players can be lock-down defenders against inferior athletes but its hard to shut down guys like Derrick Rose and Lebron James because they are so gifted. I won't go off on a long speech about people saying NBA players don't play defense but when you look at other dominant college kids from bigger conferences they have REALLY struggled because they couldn't score on or defend certain positions. Former Badger great Alando Tucker comes to mind and he was an all-american.

NBA players are unbelievably good. They are better than college players in every way except the style they play which is dictated by coaches and having elite players on teams. Why would you not isolate LeBron, Durant, Kobe, etc?
