Is Maturi the worst Gopher AD?

Was it Lindsay Lohan in the car with him?

What an embarrassment for the University of Georgia, but then again, nothing surprises me anymore.

Back on topic. Joel Maturi is not perfect, but he's a good man and has done a lot of good things for the U of M. He's in a no-win situation with a lot of people here. He's certainly taking quite a bit of heat for the current state of the football (hiring an inexperienced coach to lead a Big Ten program) and men's basketball (mostly the off-court stuff) programs, but I'd bet my bottom dollar if Brew and Tubby end up being successful here, Maturi will get zero credit.

You could probably say this about 90% of all major-college AD's though. When it goes bad, it's the AD's fault, when it goes well, the coach is great. Joel is not in a unique spot. Ultimately, when a school manages to be successful in both major sports, the AD does get some credit (see Florida, OSU, Texas, etc.). To answer the question, is Maturi the worst AD the Gophers have had. Certainly not. But that doesn't mean he's good at his job.

Wasn't going to get sucked into another Maturi thread but some irrational and even ignorant posts are hard to ignore. First, if you feel the need to pick the worst Gopher A.D. ever, you don't have to look any further than Paul Giel. He might be a Gopher icon, but he also was involved in all sorts of disasters as athletic director.

IMO, the biggest was the move to the Metrodome. At best, Giel was naive in thinking that this move would result in a return to Gopher glory. At worst, he was the point man in a cynical campaign in duping the public and betraying the U in favor of downtown money interests. Regardless, this decision might have been the single worse thing to happen to Gopher football. If that wasn't enough, how about the twin hirings of Joe Salem and John Gutekunst? It was those coaches that really established and cemented the mediocrity that has been so hard to rise above. In between was the hiring of Lou Holtz. It was applauded at the time, but the guy conned Giel into being used while the little SOB bided his time waiting for a better opportunity. A lot of Gopher fans first got their cynicism because of Holtz. Brewster might end up being a mistake also, but the jury is still out, and it's possible he still will pull it off. Anyway, it's a hiring that pales to Giel's screw-ups in football.

Giel also has his moments in basketball. He hired Bill Musselman who was the coach of a team that participated in one of the ugliest incidents in college basketball history. The same coach also had well over a 100 NCAA violations when he fled the U before the sanctions came down. As much of a slimeball as Calipari is, the U had one way before him. There was also a hell of a basketball team in the late 70's that had a season wiped out due to violations involving Mychal Thompson. Giel was A.D. then and, if my memory is right, he fought the original ruling which caused us to lose the season. Giel was also A.D. when Dutcher brought in Mitch Lee which led to the incident in Madison. This was the same Mitch Lee Giel let back on the team after a sexual assault trial. Mitch was found innocent but maybe showing up at a game afterward with a champagne glass shaved into his hair was a warning sign that shouldn't have been ignored. As one of Giel's last major acts, he also hired Clem. Again, good move at the time, but who knows when Clem actually started cheating? It was some time under Giel's watch. Giel's moves in basketball weren't as outright dumb as the football moves in that they did result in some fun years. However, all three coaches he hired left the U after a major scandal. It makes waffling on Munson and then getting Tubby look pretty good. It also makes decisions on poor Royce and on Mbakwe look pretty understandable and fair given our history.

Maturi isn't the greatest A.D. ever, but he hardly deserves the bashing he gets here. We've got a long history of mediocrity combined with population, climate perceptions, and cultural and political factors that make this a damn near impossible job. All in all, Maturi has done a decent job with some real accomplishments in navigating all this.

By the way, women's rowing is a convenient target and hard to defend. But, in reality, if you're going to blame it for football failures, you're sort of off base. Women's rowing exists because of Title IX which was overall a damn good idea. If you want to get rid of it, then you have to look at sports like wrestling, baseball, or men's swimming, or track and field. These are all sports the U is successful in and which traditionally have been part of college sports. Yes, there are other minor men's sports but they don't have the numbers to be as big a factor. They also have monied boosters which is another thing Maturi has to handle, and I would guess it's more important to keep those people happy instead of some disgruntled anonymous guy on GH.

Good post.

I've been a Gopher fan since the 60s and in my opinion he's the worst AD the Gophers have had and I'm judging him on how he's run the basketball and football programs. Even you Maturi lovers have to see how Brewster's hiring has turned into a disaster. Time for Maturi to go.

If anyone in GopherHole thinks that the AD who replaces Maturi is going to be able turn things around in the revenue sports at the U you are sadly ignorant about the U's history. You are failing to understand that many of the decision makers in the Administration and on the Board of Regents are people who couldn't care less about big time college sports. This has been demonstrated time and time again over the last 40 years. They are the type of people who put as much value on a good women's rowing team as they do a good football team.

When it comes time to select a new AD to replace Maturi there is a better than even chance that you won't like him any better than you like Joel. I have lived with a less than mediocre Gopher football program for most of my life and now that Nebraska is in the Big 10 I never expect to live to see them win another Big 10 Championship or Rose Bowl. It is extremely depressing for me to think about that. You guys better prepare yourself because the chances are very good that you will never see either one happen in your ENTIRE lifetimes. And it won't matter in the least to the large majority of people in Minnesota because they just don't care all that much about sports at the U.

They will start caring when the Vikes depart.

I don't know if it's fair or not but about 75% of AD's job approval rating are going to come from revenue sports(including Men's Hockey in Minnesota case). If a school is winning in those sports the AD is going to have a good job approval rating, if not then he is going to be in some trouble. The other 25% comes from avoiding NCAA run ins, non-revenue sports success, graduation rates, keeping students clear of the law, fundraising, profit/loss, etc.

Right now Maturi is basically a lame duck AD just waiting for the next President to bring in his replacement, but he still has to deal with a failing football program, a basketball coach that is a candidate for every job, the greatest brand in college hockey losing value, and building a ballpark that has been promise for about a decade. And that's just the internal stuff, when you toss in the external like B10 expansion, division, B10 hockey, the BTN, I think you can say Maturi is a very busy man.

So my point is that would I call him a great AD, no there are only about 5 great AD's out there, would call him a terrible AD not even close. At the end of the day he is a good AD that during his tenure has accomplished a lot and very possibly could accomplish a lot more.

So far as I know, Tubby has never been a candidate for another job since he came to Minnesota in 2007. Media articles speculate that he is but all have proven to be inaccurate.

How many ADs that aren't at (Texas, Notre Dame, Michigan, Florida) get every decision right? And how many football hires at sub-par football Div 1 schools get the football coach choice wrong? Expecting a perfect hire every time is ludicrous. Okay, we can all agree that Brewster wasn't the best choice. But it isn't like Bob Stoops or Urban Meyer were lining up to coach here.

In my mind, two things make Maturi a success:

1. Successfully shepherding a new stadium. In the 21st century, this might be the toughest thing to do of all. Who else in the college world has built a new stadium recently?

2. Hiring Tubby Smith. Being able to bring a coach with a national championship in his resumé, with the level of integrity that Tubby has, is amazing. Our basketball program was veering into obscurity. It will never be obscure with Tubby at the helm.

my 2 cents...

He got us a new football field and Tubby Smith. No, he's not the worst AD ever!

Agreed...

I haven't read through this thread but landing Tubby, that by itself is amazing. Brewster obviously sucks, but sh*t happens...

Don't forget the divisions in football. Minnesota playing for the pig, jug and axe every year plus Nebraska. Wisconsin fans get to wake up on Saturday and watch their team play Indiana and Purdue every year.

Didn't Giel also hire that drunken stiff Doug Woog with his "Minnesota players only" garbage, that resulted in a decade-plus drought of national championships in hockey, including a loss to freaking HARVARD in a national title game? Yeah, Giel was much worse - at least if you're going to hire cheating sleazeballs like Holtz, Clem and Musselman, you might want to have a national title or two to show for it.

Actually though the worst AD at the U would have to be Chris Voelz.

I think Joel Maturi is a very good AD.

However the AD is usually remembered by his or her worst hire(s) not the best one(s).

CM Newton at Kentucky (for EG) hired 2 different basketball coaches who won NCAA titles but also hired a terrible football coach (or two). UK fans remember him (Newton) for the latter, not the former.

This may be the most ridiculous thread ever started on this board. Anyone who says seriously that they prefer the metrodome instantly loses any shred of credibility that they may have had.

Wow. Maturi isn't the best or all that great.. But he's a FAR CRY from the worst.

This thread is full of fail.

if joel maturi isn't the worst AD in u of m history, it's close. sure he finished the job on making the new stadium happen and he lucked out on tubby smith (and i stress, lucked into tubby). however, he bungled the firing of dan monson, has allowed the men's hockey program to slide into mediocrity nationally which is pathetic considering our resources for that sport, picked tim brewster over more qualified candidates, and continues to hang his hat on directors cup standings. good for you joel maturi that you have great non-rev sports, but does anybody really truly care that we're good at those activities? doubtful. when we want to beat our rivals, it's at football, basketball and hockey...not tennis. can't wait to hear from the overly pc crowd that will tell me those sports are just as important to an athletic department as the big three are.:p

he isnt the worst but hes probably damn close. yea he got tubby and a stadium, but when in the course of the past few years ahs he ever stood up and made a decision on something important? never, he plays politics and panders to everyone trying to appease all parties and glosses over important topics because he doesnt want something to stick to him. well too bad buddy, youve got brewster bits all over your face.
