Is Gophers basketball really one of the toughest jobs in the country? | BMTN video

Just pick the right person. T.J. Otzelberger. Did decent at SDSU. Did nothing at UNLV. Brought the right players to Iowa St. They went from 2-22 to the NCAA tournament his first season there. Four straight NCAA tournaments. He had zero track record of high level success before ISU.

Richard Pitino haters can put your head in the sand. The most entertaining Gophers basketball that has happened in the last 25 years was during Pitinos tenure. Look at what he is doing with New Mexico. He knows how to recruit long players that can make shots. Oturu was the big guy needed to get to a sweet 16 and if he didn’t get hurt in the ncaa tourney 2nd round against Michigan state, would have been a sweet 16 team.

I don’t hate Pitino but I was ready for him to be fired. He was given 8 years at the U and it didn’t work out.

Pitino can coach and if he continues to have success at New Mexico he will be back coaching in a power conference maybe as soon as next season.

It didn’t work out in whose expectations? Has the last 4 years been good? We’re Tubbys 7-8 years before that fun to watch? Or the 10 years before that? Tubby had a terribly slow style of play that was like watching paint dry. He would be the only comparable coach in the last 26 years

It was Jordan Murphy that got hurt and instead of losing by only 20 in the tournament without him, they lost to Michigan State the previous month by 24 points with him.

2019
Feb. 9: L, 55-79
March 23: L, 50-70

Watch the game again. Yes Jordan was hurt and was at best 50% but Oturu didn’t play almost the entire 2nd half

I don't even know where to start with this post, but let's start here.

1. If you though Pitino iso ball and a 54-96 over 8 years was entertaining then good lord.

2. Oturu didn't get hurt in the 2019 tourney, that was Jordan Murphy. And we were very unlikely to beat Michigan State that day even if we were at full strength.

Tubby had a much better tenure than Pitino did here, and that isn't really arguable.

And they both played at a snail's pace. Pitino came in here talking about pressing and playing up tempo...that lasted about 2 months.

Watch the game again. He didn’t play most of the 2nd half.

To the only person that really matters. His former boss.

Oturu didn't play because he was getting burned on defense, if I recall correctly. I don't think he was hurt. They put in Omersa and he played with great energy under the bucket on defense.

That’s absolutely not true. Omersa over Oturu? Oturu played in the NBA. You are completely clueless

Tubbys years were night and day better than Pitinos here. Tubby made the tourney 3 times in 6 years, Pitino made it 2 in 8. Tubbys B1G winning percentage was 6.5% hire than Pitino's, which translates to more than 1 extra conference win per year.

I don't evaluate coaches on pace of play. I evaluate them on results. We can debate whether Tubby's tenure was good enough to keep him (i still maintain firing a coach the year they have us in the round of 32 is asinine), but we have been in 2 tourneys in 12 years since his 3 in 6, so right now being in the dance half the time sounds like an upgrade. What should not be up for debate is that Tubby was objectively more successful here than Pitino was.

This might be a sign of how pathetic our basketball program has been that we are arguing about which fired coach was better/worse than the other fired coach from several years ago. Let’s hope Niko can lift us out of this cycle of misery.

Tubbys recruiting was really slumping on at end and he kept chasing out players who had the ability to score

It was a mixed bag on trying to keep him or letting him go.

The problem is they thought they could get one of the premier guys, Pitino was not their first choice

Yes the AD thought he had 2 or 3 great coaches in his back pocket that would come here to replace Tubby. I don't think Richard was even remotely thought about when Tubby was let go. Shaka Smart was a sure thing until he said no way. If Norwood put in half as much effort as picking up coaches as he did women maybe things would have been better.

IIRC Flip Saunders was interested but was told he couldn't have Ryan Saunders on the staff, at least that was the rumor
