Is 6-4 good? In 2025, success needs more context than just win total; "There’s a lot of really good football teams in the country that are 6-4"

There is a huge difference between 6-6 and 8-4 other than two more wins or loses.

Right now we are not a good 6-4 squad. Losing the next two to teams with a combined BIG record of 4-10 would be certainly confirm that. A good 6-4 team would beat both NU and Wisky.

I don’t think that will be the case if MN barely eeks out wins these next two weeks. Say they play ugly, trail at half in both, get outgained by NW (I can’t imagine it against Wisc, sorry), win one in OT and another late like they did against Purdue. Maybe Wisconsin or NW shoot themselves in the foot, turn it over late, etc. I think you’d have a LOT of people here complaining it’s the worst 8-4 team in history, the record doesn’t tell the full story, they benefited from a soft schedule, etc.
That's true, but for most 8/9 wins was the high mark if they won the games they were supposed to. or the games people thought they were supposed to. When you use the eye test, they are an average team and we'll see what that gets us. However, 8-4 would at least hold some to be excited about the future with good development, portal, and any coaching tweaks.

Would you rather win ugly or lose pretty?
Agree, 8-4/6-3 would be soft? It likely puts us tied with Iowa and Illinois for 6th in the Conference. Top1/3 by record. You can only play your schedule. In this scenario, there would be one game that we'd kick ourselves for, California. With all the flaws that this team has and have been pointed out, 8-4/6-3 would not be soft.

For the record, I don't see us going 2-0 and if we are 7-5 or 6-6, it really just confirms that we are an average team. I'd rather be average at 8-4 than 6-6.

Definitely a win is a win.
However as far as the program goes, you want to see improvement game to game, year to year. The most frustrating thing about this season has been the lack of improvement, especially for people who want this team to take another step, like the folks on this board. It’s possible that the team will go 8-4, which would show improvement on the surface, but I doubt many here think that this years team is close to last years in quality. I don’t see one phase where this years team is as good or better than last.
Minnesota and Indiana have recruited very similar classes the last 3 years as far as the rating services go, how did they blow by us (and most others) so fast? How has this coach CC been lingering in FCS if he was this good?
By the talk of how young the team is I would expect noticeable improvement next season, or maybe even the next 3 games. Almost a season under the belt of the “young” players, we should be seeing improvement by now.
One more thing that has been bothering me, with all the guys who moved on to the next level last year, shouldn’t we have been better?
Just kind of a vent/ramble this morning. Have a great day ladies and gentlemen.

Almost every team in college football (except a handful of the very best) is going to drop a game or two that they "should" have won. Yet when it happens fans just can't get over it and it colors a lot.

That absolutely happened in 2021 when the Gophers lost to Bowling Green (and, to a lesser extent, the loss to Illinois who had a losing record). Despite those losses, I still consider 2021 to be Fleck's second best season.

Anyone still want to tell us how good the Gophers are??

6-4 is a good record given the schedule we played. I myself am OK with the record to date and hope that we finish 8-4. My feelings go more to how we were absolutely pulverized, like a JV squad, by Ohio State, Oregon and Iowa, and how several toss-up games required a near miracle at the end to secure a win. We seem to be very lucky to have attained 6-4 snd are only a few plays away from 3-7. Iowa is also 6-4 but is only a few plays away from 9-1. Sometimes the same record can feel very different.
This is exactly what concerns me going forward
