Iowa taking down Purdue?

Gopherfan75 - you really add a lot to this board with your in-depth analysis. Since you can't dispute anything I said your sarcasitic responses are quite lame.

Well basically Iowa has not accomplished anything in recent years or showed too many signs to make me think they can jump from 10th place to the top half of the Big Ten. It's pretty simple, Iowa loses too often to finish in the top 5 or 6.

Hawksfan81. Everything can be settled in pi$$ing contests in unisex toilet stalls at the MetroDome. Go for it.

Gophersfan75 - I don't think it is really that far fetched to think that Iowa can "jump" from 10th to at least 6th next year in the B10. Just off the top of my head, teams like PSU, Northwestern, and Illinois lose a LOT to graduation, so Hawkeyes could very well leap frog them. Therefore, yes, I will keep telling myself that :)

GTFO. Your comments make us all dumber having read them.

At the very least you should know that Illinois is bringing in a top 10 recruiting class.

I like that Basabe guy a lot for the Hawkeyes. The kid can really play. My only issue with him is that whenever the announcers say his name, for some reason my ears and my mind hears 'Wasabi', so I just tend to think of him as the spicy green mustard guy.

CrocShots - I realize that the Illini have a good incoming freshman class, but replacing McCamey and the rest of their senior dominated starting line-up with freshman will not be easy. Also, Bruce Weber as their coach certainly doesn't scare me. Perhaps I should have used MSU as a better example of a team that also loses a lot of senior leadership; however, I have much more respect for Izzo and what he can do with a team. It appears that many of the posters on this site are quite young as they seem to think Iowa has always been bad in hoops. Heck, I'm not an Alford fan, but he even had a team in the NCAA tourney. I just think that when looking at the entire B10 most, if not all, teams lose key senior contributors. While Iowa only graduates Jaryd Cole, who is certainly replaceable. IMO predictions for next years' top teams (in no particular order) would be: O$U, Michigan, and Wisky (although losing Lueur will hurt them and perhaps Taylor goes early to NBA?). After that you can put most teams (other than PSU and Northwestern, who appear to have the most rebuilding to do) in the mix for the "muddled" middle spots.

I think Illinois will be BETTER next year, I really think this senior class has pulled the team down. When you senior captain and leader(McCamey) is a guys who places second on the "I realize he can be great, but why the hell is even on the floor" ballot (Durrell Summers is First) you are going to have major issues. Tisdale, never put on the weight or the strength to be a legit center in the B1G, although I love Mike Davis athleticism for whatever reason he has never been able to put it together(I love thinking about how great Davis and JJ would be together in the front court).

But Illinois younger players have been really really solid, Jereme Richmond is going to be a star next season, they have about 2 or 3 really good guards coming back and a couple of solid bigs that will rebound for them. And frankly the younger Illini players have out played the older. With a solid class coming in I wouldn't be surprise, AT ALL, if the Illini are better next year.

I think you have to count Fran's first season as a success. Beating MSU and Purdue are good steps to rebuilding.

No to mention the 2,000 seat increase in attendance, both season ticket and actual.

Honestly, I have more faith in McCaffery finding a couple under-the-radar quality players to add for next season's team to make them a top-half team than I do in Weber's recruits making a big impact next year & leading them to a top-half finish. Illinois this year was a big disappointment - I think they'll be an even higher risk for being a disappointment without their seniors (DMac, Davis and Tisdale in particular) because quite frankly other than Paul and Richmond, none of their other players look like they're ready to take the bull by the horns. Illinois' freshmen will have to carry them next year if they're going to be an upper half team, and I have doubts that they will be good enough to do that. Iowa on the other hand has an established core group of players returning and if they add a couple good players - and McCaffery has shown an ability to get good under-the-radar players - could be a much better team. The problem for Iowa the past few years is they keep losing one of their best players (if not the best) every year, so they were rebuilding every year - since Lick is gone, I doubt it will happen again. As long as there are no significant transfers, Iowa I think will have a better foundation to build a team off of than Illinois.

To your point Jarryd Cole is only the 9th of 22 freshmen at Iowa since 2000 to stay through their entire careers. And those 13 did not leave early for the NBA. ;)
