I went to a Cubs/Cards game this summer at Wrigley with some buddies. After the game, we went to Slugger's Bar right down Clark St. from home plate. We eventually found ourselves in the piano bar there and the 2 guys were playing dueling Big Ten fight songs. There were 20-30 people from Iowa and probably 10-20 people from Wisconsin. No other schools seemed to be represented. They were going back and forth playing their fight songs, depending on who was tipping the most. Then, in between, they'd insult the other school.

After 5 minutes of this, my buddy - age 50 and a teacher at a local school - can't take it anymore. He goes up and puts $30 in the tip jar and they play the Rauser as the 3 of us sing ... and we see across the way that a few other MN fans joined in. The 20-30 Iowa people pool their money together and outbid him, but then my buddy comes back with $40 from his wallet to get the Rauser played until the finish.

After stuffing the $40 in the jar, he comes back with a scowl on his face and says: "I could handle it when it was Wisconsin. That was tolerable. But not Iowa. I hate those Fu&*%$^s"

I think it was 1984 in the dome. Holtz first year. Iowa comes in with Chuck Long, Ronnie Harmon and the traveling all stars. We were just getting seated when two yahoo's from Iowa sat down behind us. With Beers in there hands they Screamed in my ear Go Hawks! I turned to my friend and said this is going to be a long night. Well the Gophers, found Andre Harris making plays all over the secondary. And with a couple more Go Hawks. As the Gophers stopped them on third down, I stood up turned around and screamed, your going down, tonight. It was not settled until the fourth quarter when Gary Couch a freshman from Davenport scooted 25 yards around the right side for the game winning TD. With that I turned around and said, I told you, you were going down tonight!

The second Iowa Memory comes from 1998. I had three extra tickets for the final game. I invited two friends and one son to the game. One was a former Captain of the Team the other had been a trainer for the team. Ever the optimist, I had been telling them the team is turning it around, come on down and see these guys. The Captain, said he had to get back home for a family get together and he could stay till half. Well I thought it would be a good game Iowa, Hayden Fry's last Big 10 game, his last College Football Game. Neither team was very good. But the Gophers were clicking on every cylinder, and I think it was some like 28-0 at half. I turned to my friend and began to thank him for coming and hoped he had enjoyed the game, and maybe we could do it again sometime. He responded with he appreciated my inviting him and he was staying. What about getting home? This is too much fun. The final score 49-7.

I remember that 1998 game by how upset Iowa fans were by the score. They couldn't believe we'd "run the score up on poor ok' Hayden like that." F that I said. I can't remember what year it was exactly but 94 or 96 a Iowa fan construct a hawkeye glider and went out onto the field with it. Then another year a hawkeye fan jumped onto the field from the south end zone and ran to midfield and back without being caught. I'm sure both are recounting those two life moments in some *&^!#*&^!#*&^!#*&^!#ty bar in Cedar Rapids right now.

A few years ago, a group of friends and I went to the Gophers/Hawks game in Iowa "City". We were tailgating with some other friends (Hawkeye fans) in some random, vacant, unpaved lot. Despite there being a row of portable toilets, most the Iowans were simply urinating next to a garage in the lot (I'm sure that seemed very normal to them - indoor plumbing is probably still elusive in Iowa). Thus, with all the Iowans urinating next to this garage, the ground there was becoming very muddy (there was no grass, just dirt). At one point, a few "ladies" finished urinating by the garage and then proceeded to walk towards our group. One of these "ladies" walked right up to me and took her cowboy boots (which were muddy from all the urine) and wiped them all over my jeans while saying to me "Nice sweatshirt" (I was wearing a Gophers sweatshirt).

You can't make this stuff up!

Didn't you guys have a LB from Ankeny Iowa at one time as well? I think he was a pretty solid player too.

Yea, Hayden laid some eggs back in the 80s during trips up to the dome. I remember Iowa winning the Big10 title in 90 or 91 and losing to MN in a game they had no business losing. Rickey Foggie really played well that day though.

Just a comment related to "who hates Iowa?"... year after year, or even in between... the topic of that chant comes up in their message boards over and over again. It is always mentioned as something "classless" and people are quick to reply how it doesn't bother them. However, it keeps popping up which tells me it really does bug them even if they won't admit it.

Here you go. Check out the yardage and sacks. Plus 4 picks. Hard to not pile it on with the dreadful performance in the Iowa player's send off of Fry.

How and when did the "Who hates Iowa" chant start?

At last year's game in Iowa City my wife managed to get us some seats in a very good spot, right on the 40 yard line, half way up behind the Minnesota bench. These tickets belong to her office and have been in their possession for years (Founder was a starting tackle in 30's) so we were seated in amongst some serious donors and alumni. You don't sit here unless you've made some sizable donations. These people who should know football. Right?

On Iowa's first punt--I think they might have already been up 14-0, the Minnesota player back to receive just let the ball bounce away, but in the process a MN players was pushed back onto the ball, an Iowa player scooped it up and ran into the end zone. The Iowa faithful went nuts. My 11 year-old son asked me what happened, I explained it would be coming back because if you are blocked into the ball it is not considered a turnover.

The gentlemen in front of us turned around and sneered that I was an idiot and that no such rule existed. I calmly informed him I am pretty sure that was indeed a rule--but since the play was under review we'd both find out.

The play was reviewed, and sure enough the ref explained you cannot be blocked into the ball, first and ten for the Gophers. He was met with a massive chorus of "boos".

The woman in back of me went totally ballistic about how the refs were making up rules, the guy in front of me turned around and said--and I quote, "Looks like you got the same script for today as the refs!" I shrugged and said I was pretty sure it had been a rule for a while...but he was having none of it anmd stood up so he's "Booo" could be added to the chorus.

I am always amazed by Gopher fans here who say Hawkeye fans are generally quite knowledgeable. I have found them to be completely ignorant in some off the most basic understandings of the game, and so belligerent, you can't even carry on a conversation with them.

I have lived in Iowa since 1989. I have friends who are die hard Hawkeye Fans, yet on game day their IQ drops to a third of what they are Sunday-Friday. Thank God I also have friends who are Panther fans and Cyclone fans. Otherwise Saturdays would be very lonely.

How and when did the "Who hates Iowa" chant start?

I don't know, but it has been a staple at EVERY game at TCF Bank Stadium dating back to 2009 and I'm sure it goes back farther than that.

We were chanting it on the shuttle buses to the dome maybe 2006.

I know some Hawkeye fans that are very knowledgeable and even keeled for the most part. But you're right, there are some that are completely clueless. I know every fan base has them, but there seems to be more of them down here.

My theory is that, because Iowa football is the biggest thing around, you get a lot of people who aren't overall sports fans who consider themselves Iowa football fans.

Case in point: I know a lady who couldn't care less about anything sports related other than Hawkeye's football. She probably doesn't have a clue who Johnny Manziel, Adrian Peterson, or Albert Pujols are. Yet she has been a season ticket holder for Iowa football for 20 years. They're not all to that extreme, but I have noticed a lot more non-sports fans who are fanatic Iowa football fans than most other places I've been.

The absolute barnyard animal zoo scene in the tailgate lot in 2002. Hawkeye fans started up fire pits right in the middle of the car paths. Biggest bunch of barnyard animals I've ever seen.

Other than somebody throwing a full can of beer at me in 2001 (you just threw out a perfectly good beer), I've had no problems in Iowa City. Many more problems with Iowa fans in the "big city" than in Iowa City.

I remember it from back in school at The U in the mid 2000's at least.

I remember some Iowa fans being convinced that MarQueis Gray's touchdown against them that won the game a couple of years ago shouldn't count because he was holding the ball outside the pylon even though he ran inside the pylon. Funny stuff.

Another Game that comes to me from Joe Salem era. It was 1981. Salem really got into the rivalry. He sported Bib Overalls in Iowa City for a game. The team had lost to Indiana and Illinois. The Gopher defense was on fire. Yes, that day under Salem's defense was the star. Najarian, Fanhorst, Cardelli, Whittus. The Gopher offense did very little and got I think two field goals by Jim Gallery in the first half and held Iowa to 3. The second half saw Iowa take the lead on I think a turnover 10-6. The Gophers get close but manage only a field Goal by Gallery to make 10-9. The game went down to the wire, Hohensee moving the offense close enough for Gallery hit the game winner 12-10. I think it was only game I have seen when the Gophers won without scoring a TD. We beat the Big 10 Co -Champion and Rose Bowl rep that year. It was year to forget in Iowa City.
Washington beat them 28-0.

Went to a Iowa game with my 3 and 4 year old daughters at the time. Some Iowans were behind us and the guy kept spilling beer on one of my girls. My daughter reported this to me and I asked the guy to be more careful. At which time he just sniggered and had an evil grin on his face. He spilled it on me the next time. I got up. Went to the usher. Reported it and pointed him out. He was escorted by Minneapolis finest. His wife went with. Another member of the Iowa party was not happy with this. He starts arguing with the cops and eventually pushed one, who promptly put him in a headlock and escorted him down the tunnel of the Dome, body in tow. My girls and I decided to watch the mayhem from the side of the tunnel to watch all three of the Iowans get arrested for disorderly and striking an policeman. We never got harassed again that game. In fact, the whole group got kind of overly polite to the kids and me. We started giving our Iowa tickets away to friends in later years. I hate Iowa. I hate Hawkeye fans in general. They tolerate crap like this from their fellow fans.

I shrugged and said I was pretty sure it had been a rule for a while...but he was having none of it anmd stood up so he's "Booo" could be added to the chorus...

I have four moments.

1) Our Dome tickets were section 221 front row. We rarely had fans in our section except for Rivalry games. In 2006, an Iowa fan with a walking cast plunked herself down in seat 10, which was a folding chair. Our row mates were late, as usual. When they arrived, she refused to move--"I'm handicapped, ass-holes! Find yourself another seat!" We asked her what row she was supposed to be in, and she said "This one, now leave me alone!" Our friend Patty of course had to get the cops, who told the invalid to move. "Wow, does your City treat the disabled like sh!t. You'll be hearing from my lawyer!". She moved. Patty said--"geez, if she had been nice I would have let her sit there..."

2) Similar to above. Same game, an Iowa punt bounds into the end zone right in front of us. An Iowa player tries to "save" it and the ball lands on the one. Referees blow a touchback. The Iowa fans go bonkers. I explain to my wife next to me that in college football, a punt that crosses or even "scratches" the goal line is an automatic touchback. The overhearing Iowa guys behind start screaming at me that I'm clueless about college football, and that "the fix is on". The ref comes on and says "the ball crossed the goal line and is therefore a touchback, 1st down Minnesota at the 20 yard line". The same guys go apesh!t and start a "f*ck you ref!" chant. Guy two states "I guess they have a different rule book up here in Cheat-Town!" I laughed. Later, Mike Sherels intercepted Drew Tate in the end zone right in front of us and the same guys screamed that Sherels had illegally hid behind the referee on the play and should be ejected. Very knowledgeable.

3) Iowa City, 2005. I'm waiting outside the stadium ladies room for Gopherfaith, minding my own busness, holding our blankets. An Iowa fan runs by and punches me in the chest as hard as he could on the way by, knocking the wind out of me. A lady in Iowa gear does ask me if I'm alright. Another passes by and smirks "you have to hit him higher!" I smiled.

4) 2003, we bought tickets from Iowa and got seats right on the 50, about six rows behind the Minnesota bench. You have to stand the whole game because the view is pretty bad. We did have a couple Minnesota fans around us. A six to eight year old boy to the left of us spend most of the game jumping up and down on his bench screaming "f*ck you Gophers!" and "f*ck you Mulletheads!" I wonder which penitentiary that kid is in right now. The "fans" in that area spend about 90% of their time screaming at the Minnesota players and throwing crap at them.

I hate Iowa because:

I went trout fishing there once, caught a nice 2 pound 16 inch rainbow trout. I started a little campfire to cook it on, took my first bite, and it tasted exactly the same as pig $hit smells.

I don't know how it started but my first recollection of the "Who Hates Iowa" chant was in the late 90's in section 137 (or 139?) at the Dome. Some guys about 5-10 rows behind us always chanted that every game. Loved it.

My Iowa hating moment?

1. 2001 - Take my fiancee to Iowa City for her first road trip. As we're walking to the stadium a group of classy drunk Iowa fans started chanting "SLUT SLUT SLUT" and "B*TCH B*TCH B*TCH" as we walked by. She refuses to go back to Iowa City.

2. 2002 - As Iowa is beating us and capturing a share of the Big Ten title the Gophers get a first down late in garbage time. A little girl that I'd estimate to be 7 years old cheers. A drunk Iowa rube yells "SHUT THE F**K UP. LOOK AT THE SCOREBOARD!" When their fans rushed the field afterwards I witnessed 2 Iowa fans urinating in the stands of the Metrodome.

Remember how they were convinced Marqueis out of bounds when he ran the game winning TD because he held the ball out an it was on the other side of the pylon even though his body was inbounds.
