They totally cover up any issues. Same for the Badger media. The college runs the town. This is one the biggest issues in college sports. Cover up after cover up! Can you imagine the S storm if this was in Minneapolis??? OMG

If Iowa football goes down, everybody suffers. The University, the area and the media themselves. There’s a lot riding on that program remaining competitive.

In reading some Iowa fan sites, I'm not sure their fans would agree with this assessment.

Right now, a whole lot of them are blaming their various beat writers. Some have gone as far as to suggest this is all some sort of plot to destroy the program, which is of course ludicrous.

Trust me, media members for the most part try to do their job as objectively as they can. Sometimes the news is good, sometimes the news is bad. In this case, it's bad. And Iowa fans are lashing out at the media and the players as a result.

It comes with the territory. But a journalist's first job is to report on whatever is relevant to their respective beat, whether it's positive or negative. The Iowa writers are doing just that.

One thing the University of Minnesota certainly does not enjoy is the protection provided to a lot of major college programs by the local media and authorities. We get to see it from time to time when stories surface of the way organizations have bent over backwards to protect the program at all costs in many of these towns.

Program issues are rarely reported so the fans are not used to anything negative. They don’t know how to handle it and their defense mechanism is to blame the messengers. It would still be blown up much larger in Minneapolis and not just because the population is higher.

I would argue often it is exactly the opposite.

Seems like plenty of local media actively looking to hate on the U and U sports ...

Remember that editor at the trib who went off about Jerry ... when they had jack squat on him.

Trust me in that I don’t think things should be covered up but in the world Of recruiting any advantage is huge!

That’s what he said...Minneapolis media are not covering anything up for the gophers.

My brother in law lives in the Iowa City area and he says that everyone thinks its BS...mostly because they do not want to lose recruits and no one cares about anything as much as they care about Hawkeye Football. Runs everything down there.

This local is pretty damn easy on coaches in this town who not only do not win for years but who have brought lousy characters here. I do think their are other college locals where there is still a old boys club especially if you win. Back in the day we did have a local who tore down the program. Still, pretty softball now as we have a basketball coach that is 48-82 and no one has called for his head or blasted him for several truly bad characters he brought here.

Sure there is a ton of truth to that.

I’m not talking about going easy on the coaches. I’m talking about things associated with the university to be more specific. The whole Bo Ryan fiasco with his mistress, etc would have been on the front page of the Strib for days. But it was buried in the Madison papers, same with the Montee Ball story. Coverage is not equitable

I am curious to see how many, if any recruits they lose. Has anyone been following this?

You are describing every day at CNN. If a story doesn’t fit your narrative, you simply don’t cover it. Iowa, WI are at the top of their pecking order in their respective cities, while the gophers get much more critical coverage at home.

Since I'm late to the dance, are there any relevant facts that someone could share regarding something nefarious occurring in Iowa city that the media isn't reporting.

How long until this ends up being moved to the off topic board(s)?

The sexual assaults etc. by players on the team are associated with the University and were handled pretty quietly. The media here is 10 times larger than in Madison or Iowa City. We COVERED the slimeball Teague garbage for how many days on the front page, one ? Cephus was covered several times on the front page.

Iowa will cover this up. Nothing will change. I have relatives down there...the word is that the players made all this up. Ferentz is the King and this will not change that.

I do think the locals in Iowa City have a higher % of people that would rather not know. Not sure why since he has 2 big 10 titles, zero playoff appearances. 97-75 CONFERENCE RECORD which is like winning 9 of every 16. I do get that it a pretty tough place to win and he did manage two 8-0 conference seasons. He has done a ton of wonderful things for the community and i suppose they feel they could do a great deal worse.

I can't believe that I'm defending Ferentz and Iowa, but are you seriously complaining about his record? He has five top ten national finishes. After the first two seasons of taking over a mess, he's finished below .500 in conference twice in 19 years. You're not sure why they're pleased with him as coach?

Iowa City media? There isn't much of an Iowa City media.

The only newspaper, the Press Citizen, is a shell of a newspaper. They mostly just publish leftovers from the Des Moines Register. Which is also a shell of a newspaper, and they both mostly publish leftovers from USA Today and Gannett.

People in Iowa City are talking about it. Like everything lately, most people's opinions align politically. The left thinks it matters, the right thinks it is BS.

I stated things he did very well and things not that great while stating that it is a very hard job and that perhaps they felt they could not do better. He won a higher % of conference games than Alvarez but Barry inherited a worse program, won the conference 3 times, won 3 Rose Bowls and had 3 top 6 poll finishes in only 15 years. Would anyone here be pleased if PJ equaled Ferentz ?

I live down here in Iowa City (for another three weeks). Honestly people seem a lot more focused on the protests down here. Kinnick and the hospital got tagged with a bunch of grafitti over the weekend and protesters shut down I-80, so that is what any talk is about. I haven't talked to anybody who knew about or brought up the scandal but it is still early.

Have you seen these guys!?!?!

(In reality I assume the Iowa media cover up theories are just as much BS as the 'Barry controls the Wisconsin media' BS).

The endemic paranoia in some MN fans about the media and the world at large regarding how the football team is regarded is either unseemly or laughable.
For the record the Milwaukee paper covers WI sports as much as the Madison paper does. I read them on line and "scandals" and controversies are covered.

You are Gopher fan, right? Just curious as I see your moniker is Urbandale. Any hoots...I will also say that Ferentz has done a super great job down there. Very commendable and lots of respect for him until now. If he wants to defend the strength coach and his son and if he knew about any of this beforehand ...this makes him accountable. Just sayin'.
