Bre Cera will transfer from the Hawkeyes:


Iowa women's basketball was already in a bit of an odd spot with two open scholarships for next season. Now, that number has jumped to three.

The Hawkeyes have granted rising sophomore guard Bre Cera a transfer release, the team announced Tuesday. Cera, from Mukwonago, Wis., played in 31 games this year and started 18, but her minutes dwindled as the season wore on. She averaged two points and 2.1 rebounds per game.

"We appreciate the contributions Bre has made to our team on and off the court as a Hawkeye," head coach Lisa Bluder said in a release. "We wish her the best as she pursues a career closer to home."

Playing time would've been hard to come by next year for Cera. Kathleen Doyle, Tania Davis and Makenzie Meyer are all locks for big-time minutes in the backcourt. Alexis Sevillian is no longer a redshirt. And coaches expect a lot from their lone incoming freshman, Davenport North wing Jinaya Houston.

Per NCAA rules, Cera will have to sit out one season at her new school.

Christina Buttenham's time as a Hawkeye isn't over. Unfortunately, the same can't be said for her time as a Hawkeye basketball player.

The Big Ten Conference granted Buttenham a medical noncounter waiver for the 2017-18 season, Iowa announced Thursday. Translation: The rising senior will still receive athletic financial aid while she finishes her degree, but her basketball career is over. She will remain a part of Iowa's team from the sidelines.

Buttenham suffered a concussion during practice in early February and played just 23 minutes in Iowa's final 11 games.

"Injuries are an uncontrollable and unfortunate part of the game of basketball, but with the national discussions and information that we now have about concussions, we feel that Christina’s long-term well-being is more important than a few more months on the basketball court," Iowa's Lisa Bluder said in a news release. "We are glad that Christina will remain a part of our program from the sidelines as she completes her degree."

Iowa pre-season observations from Hawk Central: The most important is that Tania Davis should be ready for the season opener.

With this year’s Iowa women’s basketball team, it’s hard to predict much of anything.

Its offseason was … tumultuous, let’s say. Bre Cera transferred to Milwaukee. Christina Buttenham’s career was shortened by concussions. Jinaya Houston left the program two months before her college career began.

But Megan Gustafson and her Associated Press All-American potential returned. So did Kathleen Doyle, Tania Davis and a roster that, despite losing three pieces, somehow retained depth.



Tania Davis ahead of schedule

Iowa worried it wouldn't have Davis until Christmas or Big Ten play after she tore her right ACL last February. But there she was, playing with a right knee brace on Tuesday afternoon.

Davis is active for about 75 percent of practice, Bluder said in the team’s media guide. She said Davis should be ready to go for Iowa’s opener Nov. 10 against Quinnipiac.

For the second time in less than two weeks, the Iowa Hawkeyes have been dealt a devastating blow.

Makenzie Meyer suffered a broken bone in her left (non-shooting) hand toward the end of women’s basketball practice Wednesday, The Gazette has learned.

A sophomore from Mason City, Meyer is out “indefinitely,” according to a source close to the program. She could be back within two weeks, or it could be longer.
