Interesting Map - College Football Fans By Zip Code

Yeah I agree. I have no idea what their formula for determining this is but I have to imagine it is incredibly flawed.

It's absurd. Were I live, apparently the Texas Longhorns is the most popular team? Not close. It would be Gophers, NDSU then probably Nebraska.

I work with teens and you'd be surprised. The teens appear to love the Ducks' fashion. I see WAY more Oregon apparel than Gopher. (I also see a lot more Wisconsin & Boise State apparel than Gophs.) The map is probably formulated via sales of some sorts.

There are a lot of questionable results all over the map. But it isn't exactly breaking news that a ton of Wisky grads/fans live in MN.

Looking forward to the college basketball map, where most of SEC country will be blank - "data not available."

Data based on Facebook 'likes'. Super-duper scientific.

How it was done:

Like the other sets of maps, these were created using estimates of team support based on each team’s share of Facebook “likes” in a ZIP code. We then applied an algorithm to deal with statistical noise and fill in gaps where data was missing. Facebook “likes” are an imperfect measure, but as we’ve noted before, Facebook likes show broadly similar patterns to polls.

So this whole thing, especially with how it was calculated given the demographics of a ton of our state, this is absolute garbage

Of course it fails to take into account about a zillion factors...so the standard deviation is plus or minus 24%, therefore leaving 90% of the county data being completely useless.

Roseau county = Texas Longhorns 9.5%, Gophers 8.7%, and Badgers 8.5%???

Uh, no. I deal with a lot of people in this county, and the only college colors flying about are Gophers, NDSU, and UND. Heck, there's a far better chance I'll see a UMD Bulldog sweater than the Longhorn or Badger sweaters combined.

One flaw: Most facebook users are younger than 40. Most diehard gopher fans are looking south at 50

With all the buzz about kids migrating to Instagram and Snapchat, I was interested in this claim.

46.7% of Facebook users are 35 or older and that figure will likely be above 50% soon based on trends:

For comparison, in the US 52.9% of people are 35 or older.

I lived in Kittson County and yeah it's solely due to kids "liking" the fan pages on facebook skewing the numbers. I see far more of the 3 listed above and don't think I've ever seen a Badger jersey/sweatshirt up there.

well yeah that's due to kids now wanting something where their grandma isn't commenting on all their pics/statuses. But then the issue is that most people over age 35 aren't rampant "likers" and simply use it to post pics of their kids and stay in touch (obviously there are exceptions) so the numbers still stay skewed towards the younger group that was a more active partaker of various modalities of Facebook usage

The first link's data comes from facebook. They may just be saying they are appealing to older people unscrupulously because that same part of the population has more money.

You know, on my yahoo profile, my teams are "Gophers, Huskers, and Badgers." I picked them because one was my favorite team, one was a program I have respected for a long time, and the last one, well that was one I wanted to see game results for - because of how happy I get when they lose. But by the College Football Fan Map, I'd be an equal 33% a fan of all three. ...This might just blow your mind, NY Times, but people favorite/like things on the interwebz for dynamic and not static reasons.

Having said that, I still think the map provides a glimpse of fan support. Even if the data is skewed and incomplete, it's still an interesting, if not humbling glimpse.

I call total BS!
Gopher football has less than 37,000 likes on FB. No one said this is scientific, but that's why we come out looking bad.

Gopher hockey has more than 70,000 likes. UND hockey has less than 13,000. That map would end up looking stupid, too. Parts of these maps are interesting to look at, but as a whole they are not worthy of more than a few minutes of attention.

i dont care how it is determine, bad info in is always bad info out

in the area south of the TC that i live in it is by far Gopher country followed by Bucking Fadgers then Hogeyes.

the map is cool but misrepresents true facts

That map has the Gophers a distant second to Wisconsin in the entire Twin Cities metropolitan area. It's a very strange map, at least our part of it. For most of the country, the maps look plausible; the top teams are the local teams. If you look at the map of Texas, for example, you see that while Texas is dominant in most parts of the state, the other Texas FBS schools have their islands of popularity.

In the states there is no FBS school, the map gets weird, probably because the map ignores the popularity of the local team. The University of Montana just might have a little bit of popularity in the state of Montana, but the map doesn't reflect this.

In most states, the popularity numbers of the alleged three most popular teams adds up to a pretty high number, usually well over 70%. When you look at Minnesota, the alleged three most popular teams only add up to around 30% or less.

This doesn't pass the T-shirt test: This map has the Gophers a distant second to Wisconsin in the Twin Cities, but the ratio of Minnesota T-shirts to Wisconsin T-shirts is very high. It's pretty much true over the entire state, you see a lot of Minnesota shirts, and I don't recall ever seeing an Oregon shirt. This map shows Duke hotspots in North Dakota and Montana, and I really don't think that there are a lot of Duke football fans there. The data for Minnesota seems to be incorrect, this what I must say is:

In my view FB likes isn't so much a measure of alignment of the population as it is a proxy for intensity of affinity. Frankly it matches my experience.

If only more Gopher fans were like the people who frequent this board...I'm hanging onto the 'sleeping giant' belief - that things will get really fun around here when the Gophers win the conference again.

No, the map simply doesn't represent your anecdotal evidence. The map, based on the explanation of how it was derived, is reporting only on facts without subjectivity.

I have noticed BADger fans tend to be louder and more obnoxious then most Gopher fans especially when surrounded by Gopher fans.

The way I personally look at it is, if there's a poll that I didn't take part in, it's 100% bullsh*t, weather it'd be politics, sports etc.
In my county, and every county i've ever been in, it's Gophers, then follows with Nebraska, Ohio State, Iowa then Wisconsin.
The only people I know anywhere in MN that are Badger fans first, are those who've moved here from Wisconsin.
