Indiana fires Kevin Wilson

Word has it he is kinda a jerk.

That's not to say being a jerk is a bad thing as a HC, but that's been something I've heard before.

Anyway, it is rare for a school to pull the "with cause" kinda clauses that prevent a buyout. They might, but even in cases where you see scandals where a school might do that, they don't.

Mike Leach was fired with cause and Texas Tech didn't pay a dime to him. Long time in court, but they stuck to their guns.

That was different though.

The state of Texas can just nope out of a contract all it wants and that is what they did. Leach tried to sue and lost.

I forgot they call themselves a republic & always talk about seceding.

Too bad it looks like he could be scum. He might have been a good OC for us. Not sold on ours.

He came from Oklahoma I think. If he was going to take a coordinator job, he could probably do better than Minnesota.

Wonder if we'll get another fat little girlfriend press conference out of this one.

They Texas still have residents that think can still secede because it was in the state Constitution when they entered the United States as a State.
They forget that they gave that right up when they joined the Confederate States and that in fact nullified that legal secession part of their State Constitution.

I haven't studied this stuff in a really long time, but that's not how I remembered it.

I thought the idea that Texas could secede was an urban myth spread by people out of thin air (*cough* Rick Perry *cough*). Once you joined the Union it is perpetual. I suppose it could be mutually agreed upon with Constitutional Amendment. But when Texas entered the union, they did not have the authority to secede, regardless of what was in their state constitution (Supremacy Clause).

Furthermore the Confederate states ATTEMPTED secession was only a revolt. It was null and void. It had no legal impact on anything.

I do think Texas has the right to divide into 5 smaller states though.

I recall a radio interview shortly after he was hired where he came off like a complete Richard. From that early point forward, he always seemed like a nasty ornery jerk in the admittedly limited media exposure I had of him.

Deadspin is also reporting the player mistreatment angle and they were mentioning that he has a cheap buyout despite having a recent extension. My question is: If this is for player mistreatment, would Indiana even have to pay a buyout??

I remember that too. Can't remember why I was actually listening to KFAN that weekend afternoon, but he really went after Jack Trudeau (if we're thinking of the same interview).

As others have said, really inventive offensive coach, but about six shades of crazy. He probably ends up as a coordinator at a top school.

Just to give some perspective about Kevin Wilson.

Kevin Wilson was hired the same year as Jerry Kill

Kevin Wilson took over for a coach who had been there 4 seasons (Bill Lynch). Bill Lynch's record was 19-30 (6-26 B10 record).
Jerry Kill took over for a coach who had been there 4 seasons (Tim Brewster). Tim Brewster's record was 15-30 (6-21 B10 record). Fired during the season.

Essentially - - Our programs were in a pretty similar position prior to these respective hires. I realize that our program had more recent success under Mason, but if you were watching the program at the end of the Brewster years, those Mason teams were long-forgotten. We weren't just bad, we were awful.

Kevin Wilson's record - 26-47 (12-37 B10 record). They made two bowl games. Zero seasons .500 better in B10.
MN record since: 39-37 (20-29 B10 record). Played in 5 bowl games. 3 seasons .500 or better in B10.

Most people on here, rightfully, thought that it would have been idiotic to fire Wilson if it were entirely football related. He wasn't, it sounds like it's the off-the-field stuff.

Indiana will never be any good in football.

Please stick to the narrative that Kill/Claeys and staff are MAC level coaches.

I didn't realize that Tom Allen was MarQueis Gray's high school coach.

He quit but

According to this, he quit, over differences of philosophy. Not fired over treatment of players.
http://www.espn.com/college-footbal...-hoosiers-football-coach-kevin-wilson-resigns
SIGN HIM! Offensive Coordinator/Assistant Head Coach.

The differences weren't his...the differences were the AD's differences in how he handled people. Wilson gave up $12 million on his contract to "resign". He got $500,000 in a settlement. So, obviously Wilson agreed Indiana had cause to fire him, otherwise he wouldn't be giving up $12 million and resigning.

It sounds like, the AD didn't like like Wilson's treatment of people, he received assurances of change, but had wisely kept him on a short leash with a minimal buyout. Wilson reverted to form and the AD fired him.

Interesting comparison/perspective of the 2 programs. Especially after reading all the posts from folks over the past month who want Claeys fired.

Wilson's philosophy was to rush players back from concussions, and IU's wasn't. :)

I'd take him as an Offensive Coordinator if why he was fired wasn't something horrible. Although I doubt they would make that move after a 1 year coordinator just got us to score more points than any other B1G west team this season...
