Looks like IU doesn't want Purdue's coaching hire to steal the excitement in the state.

Go Gophers!!

I'm not that surprised, but slightly. On one hand, he has them in a bowl, on the other hand, he's been there awhile and has seemingly maxxed out at 6-6. Frankly I was surprised they brought him back this year.

Lots of teams looking for coaches.

Edit: NVM, looks like it could be scandal related.

Unless he's implicated in some sort of scandal or something (as already referenced) - just really, really stupid. They're a never-was in football and he finally had them back to respectability and competing in virtually every game.

This is a terrible move. The offense was good immediately, and it seemed like the defense was getting better over the last year or two. I know the rise has been slow, but a rise it has been.

Rumors of player mistreatment.

Who do you choose? Purdue or Indiana?

Purdue has had a better history and is in the West division. Seems like a simple choice.

There was a bleacher report article this year submitted by an anonymous ex-Purdue player (I know, I know) basically slamming the administration for (if I remember correctly) ineptness and running the football program into the ground.

I wonder how much of that is a) true and b) known in coaching circles (I.e. Is there a "stay away" attitude when it comes to that opening.) or does every big shot coach's ego prevent him from caring about those types of things.

Agree that Purdue looks good on paper.

This has to be big. Making it to a bowl game 2 years in a row is probably the best they can hope for.

You'd think to fire the guy they would have gone through an investigation and such first.... not good for that coach if they did all that.

Yea, this has to be for a major scandal/off field BS. No chance Wilson would be fired on merit.

That's too bad. Had he hung on for just two more years, he'd have been able to coach a game in Minnesota.

Did you see his sideline reaction to our 4th quarter fumble recovery in '14?

Dude was on the edge of sanity.

'13. But yea, I listened to his post-game interview after they beat Sparty this season and...agreed. Seems close to coming unhinged constantly.

Phenomenal offensive coach, and phenomenally offensive coach. The whole package.

Seems like a situation similar to Tim Beckman from the early rumors.

I recall a radio interview shortly after he was hired where he came off like a complete Richard. From that early point forward, he always seemed like a nasty ornery jerk in the admittedly limited media exposure I had of him.

Deadspin is also reporting the player mistreatment angle and they were mentioning that he has a cheap buyout despite having a recent extension. My question is: If this is for player mistreatment, would Indiana even have to pay a buyout??

Word has it he is kinda a jerk.

That's not to say being a jerk is a bad thing as a HC, but that's been something I've heard before.

Anyway, it is rare for a school to pull the "with cause" kinda clauses that prevent a buyout. They might, but even in cases where you see scandals where a school might do that, they don't.

Probably not.

However, that would be decided by the courts and Indiana would have to decide whether it was worth their time financially (litigation could cost more than the buyout) and worth it for them to have this in the press for longer.

My guess is that they would pay the buyout (or come to some agreement on the buyout) so that both parties could move on.

That was a crazy and fortunate for Gophers ending. I probably would have lost it if I was him too.

Have we ever hired another B1G HC from another team?

He's referring to the fact that we haven't had a home game against Indiana since 2008, meaning the Hoosiers have never played at TCF, and will be finally playing a game in Minneapolis again a decade later in 2018.

OH

Thanks.

It's perfectly logical that you play a team in conference at home once a decade.
