I'm not pulling for Tubby to be canonized...

Just to clear the air, yes, I am an alum. Also, I fully understand that I am rooting only for laundry and I think that I'm just being honest. A basketball coach's responsibility is to win games. Let the NCAA determine who's put on the court. It's great that we have such a respectable man as the head of our basketball program, but I'd take a sleeze if it meant more victories. Now don't get me wrong, I think Tubby may be the best man for the job but that is because of his name recognition and basketball knowledge. Him being a guy with high morals means about as much to me as his eye color.

Oh yeah...I also think Rick Mons brings up an interesting argument about being fans of pro vs collegiate sports. I think his argument used to carry a lot of merit, but is now quite naive (I mean that in the nicest way possible...not trying to start a fight). College basketball is big business that hides itself within a university. I agree with the importance of all of his bullet point but, at some point, you have to decide if you're going to be Northwestern or join the rest of the major college programs. Trust me, I don't want felons out there running around with the "M" on their chest but benching too many kids for attitude problems and allegations will come back to hurt the overall perception of the basketball program.

You have a point on some level I guess. I've considered, what would I do if the U said, 'the hell with it, let's win at all costs' and hired say, Sleazeball John Calipari? You'd obviously have no problem with it, and I guess that's a valid opinion. I'd have a huge problem with it. So much so, I don't think I could root for the Gophers so long as he was the coach, even though I have since I was 8 years old.

One can argue that Clem was no better, and maybe he wasn't. But at least we didn't condone what he was doing and when made aware of it, swiftly escorted him out of town and accepted the punishment.

Your point about pro sports is somewhat valid, but I don't think fans completely cease to care about how players conduct themselves off the field. Obviously, the academic issues go away, and some of the issues such as what Bostic is alleged to have done, are pretty minor and I don't really care if Percy Harvin has done the same thing, unless he's dumb enough to get caught. But did I care about the Love Boat Incident? Yes, it was ebarassing to the entire state. And would I care if Brett Favre got arrested for shoplifting and assualting a guard at the Mall of America? Yes.

The Vikings in fact have always had thier off-field issues and it does marr thier sucess to some degree. Meanwhile, you almost never hear about any member of the Twins organization getting in any trouble whatsoever. So while they may be cheap, I respect the way they run thier organization a lot more then what has gone on at Winter Park over the years. One thing you have to give Childress credit for is that such incidents have markedly decreased on his watch.

Thanks for being civil, Howeda7. My favorite Golden Gopher basketball memory (I'm 29, so don't jump on me for things that happened before 1990 or so) is the '97 team that went to the Final Four. Apparently that team wasn't doing their own homework...so what. I only care because we got caught and you can't take away those memories. I don't often sit back in my chair and get nostalgic about what a great guy/student Brent Lawson was (I'm sure he was)...or what a clean program Monson ran. I want big 10 titles and NCAA runs. I see everyone's point about not rewarding kids that break the rules, and maybe I'll change my viewpoint if/when I have kids of my own but I just don't see the point in following sports for any other reason than to beat the opponent. Calipairi may be a sleaze-ball, but the main reason people hate him is that he wins. His sleaziness just becomes an easy target for the losers. It was the comment by the A&M coach that really stuck with me. His 'respect' for Tubby Smith was a little backhanded if you ask me. It was almost like he was saying Tubby was out of touch with the reality of today's game, and he wished he would be able to do something like that. It's almost like the 'respect' that exists for Princeton's ball-movement style offense. It's easy to respect a loser (not calling Tubby a loser) and it's easy to hate a winner. In the end, I'd rather be able to gloat to our rivals and have them make excuses why they can't compete with us than to have them really have respect for us as they enjoy their run to superiority.

Sounds like you've got a good new sales pitch for Tubby to use when talking to the family of a recruit!! I have low morals and will let your son get away with almost anything. He'll be on the court at all times for my team and won't be held accountable for any of his actions. I'm a sleeze for a coach and will even give you a little money on the side if you want, just as long as we win games. Your son may not have a future whatsoever beyond his time here playing basketball, but who cares? Heck, skip a few classes every week, I won't care!!

RW+RW=Our W's...I think you're taking it a little far. I agree with your moniker, though.

You're right. That would be too honest of a statement for a sleezeball coach; you have to hide things better and then leave town once it looks like you might get caught.

The 1997 team is my favorite Gopher BB memory too, and the scandal can't erase it, you're right. But it does diminish it. And it would have been almost impossible to enjoy that season if I'd known that it was happening. Am I saying cheat but don't get caught? No. I'm saying that running a program that you know is bending every rule and probably cheating ruins the whole thing. Maybe it wouldn't to you, but it does to me and most people. I don't hate Calipari because he wins, I hate him because he's a sleazeball. I don't hate Billy Donvan just because he won. But he's never been even remotely accused of anything, except by Roy Williams and he was investigated and cleared. That's just one example.

This post also pretty much sums up my feelings on the issue. Would I like to win? Heck ya. Anybody and everybody would like to win. But is winning all that matters to me? Absolutely not, which is why I shudder at statements like those previously made by GopherHomer. I can understand his/her viewpoint as to winning being what coaches are brought in for. However, it is precisely this mindset that has led to the currently unsavory nature of NCAA Division 1 athletics. And as most college coaches will tell you, winning and maturing into a full adult are exclusive of one another. On the other hand, losses happen both in athletics and in life as well, so that's also part of becoming an adult. It goes both ways.

Again, it's entirely possible that GopherHomer just wants to see a team that he/she roots for do well. But there are many who would pervert that intent to the expense of all else, which is what we currently see (and for that matter have already seen) over and over again.

Maybe it was also a subtle statement to any worried mothers out there that his program puts integrity first.....

If it was and it works I say "well done, Tubby!" I just think the whole 'mom' angle gets blown out of proportion some times. When I was eighteen, I sure wasn't going to listen to my parents about which school to go to. In fact my teenage rebellion probably would have automatically nixed any suggestion they had.

Thanks, but I can't really take the credit. I believe I first heard Jerry Seinfeld use it in a bit years ago. But it seemed appropriate.

It was Seinfeld. He was talking about baseball.

Wow....

I'm sure Tubby is so concerned about worried mothers that he is going to lose games and significantly hurt our postseason chances
