Illinois will wear these sweet throwback uniforms vs. Michigan Saturday. The 1920s-themed uniforms commemorates 100th anniversary of Red Grange’s 6-TD

Maybe the ugliest uniforms I've ever seen, this beats those horrific Wisconsin Adidas ones from 2019 or so.

Throw backs are cool, but that’s a little too far back for my taste.

A couple weeks after Red Grange torched Michigan, Minnesota shockingly upset Illinois in the dedication game for Memorial Stadium. Illinois would not play at Memorial Stadium again until 1941.
Read in one of my UM/Big 10 Football history books that the cost of train rides was really a fiscal challenge. I know this affected scheduling games with O-H-I-O State and probably was an issue for the Iliini. Wouldn't be surprised though if the upset played a bigger role in the gap.

I love throwback jerseys. I'd be happy if we'd have a maroon jersey, a gold jersey, and then a throwback uniform for homecoming. Anything to keep the gray practice jerseys that they called "anthracite" from ever coming back.
I wear those anthracite way too often in NCAA revamped 😅

1924 was a big year for Red Grange - a unanimous All-American and legendary for the big win over Michigan, 39-14, when he seemingly scored every time he touched the ball. Less well known is that he played at Minnesota that year in the game officially inaugurating our Memorial Stadium. Illinois lost 20-7. My dad was a ten-year-old newspaper hustler before the game, snuck in and saw Grange stopped. It was the only loss for Illinois that season.

Your dad was Sid?

Grange got his revenge many years later when he gave a rousing pep talk to the Illinois 1957 team when they played undefeated and #4 Gophers early in the season. The loss turned into a spiral for the Gophers, whose losing season was followed by two of Warmath's worst, 1958 and '59, which nearly cost him his job. But the 1960 national championship and Rose Bowl saved the day for him.
