You think Sid might mention the possibility of Kill going to Illinois?

To quote Reddit, Illinois isn't a dumpster fire. Dumpster fires are Illinois.

You think Sid might mention the possibility of Kill going to Illinois?
Highly unlikely. He may mention his close personal friend, Red Grange, however.

I wonder if there is some info that makes Cubit culpable with the stuff that went on with their sleazy ex coach?

Who are the top "Illinois" guys?

Illinois rivals the U for an athletics department in utter disarray. Groce is next to get canned there.

BTW, this represents my 1,000th career GH post, a number I never thought I'd reach as a young Junior member. It's been a fun ride...thanks to my fellow Gopher Holers for the insight and entertainment.

I'll never understand this need for schools to give someone an extension to fire them a few months later. It's a joke...

Yep, in fact MN is much bigger dumpster fire. Since 1980, B10 football records: Illini 123 -160 -5 with 3 B10 titles and Minnesota 97 -190 -1 no titles.
And in basketball, it's not even close as well.

You're right when you bring the view out that far, of course. But I'm referring to the last 5-10 years, with Illinois having multiple chancellors, ADs, football and basketball coaches, who haven't done anything to improve their programs, and in both cases set them back significantly.

I believe today was the first official day on the job for this AD. Your point is valid, but this AD likely would not have given that extension.

You are both idiots. Our football program is on an upward trajectory, men's basketball could have promise, men's hockey is not up to normal levels. Other than that all of the other athletic programs are in good shape. It is not a dumpster fire. And if your criteria is going to preface the last 20 years of history, then it will take 20 years of winning conference titles in order for you to call them average... Just go find another school to rip on and stop claiming you are a fan of the U.

Al Golden. Do it.

Yet Men’s Basketball fans would have been up in arms if we did that to Pitino. In hindsight, it might have been the best thing to do.

Basketball is a dumpster fire. The Men have gone from winning an NCAA tournament game to playing in the NIT to wondering what post-season play even feels like.

Don't let the facts get in the way of a moronic opinion. We are the worst program in the B10 when combining men's BB and FB results the last 40 years. And it's not really close. 2 B10 BB titles since 1970. Even NW has 3 FB titles.

Denial is a defense mechanism almost all gopher fans use. AchyBreaky is simply refusing to acknowledge that the U is a 5-alarm dumpster fire. He is acting as if everything is okie-dokie whereas the rest of the world sees it for what it is.

In cases like his where complete denial has set in, the sufferers are mystified by the behavior of people around them and think those people are the ones with a problem. They oftentimes lash out calling them things like trolls even as the walls around them are caving in. Even if he figures it out, he'll still likely turn a blind eye to this uncomfortable situation and continue to pretend nothing is wrong.

I don't blame him or others like him as I once acted as if all was well. I guess after 40+years of being a fan, you eventually get worn down and reluctantly face reality. Give him some time, he'll probably come around. In the meantime, just go along with it as dumpster fires rarely cause collateral damage and if nothing else are entertaining to watch.

The bolded part is so funny I don't know how to respond. Losing at historic rates and losing 1/3 of your roster to suspension/removal. What promise!

Yes please. Hire a guy who has been away from College football for 21 years.

Lovie would be an A hire. No doubt about it. Don't fool yourself that it isn't.

He's a 58 year old career .500 coach who hasn't recruited in 21 years. Good luck to them if true.

Yeah, ex-NFL head coaches are a dime a dozen at the college ranks. I hope we never have to settle for one.

Great. Another program that we're gonna lose to in the future.

My sources say this is a done deal. Very impressive Illinois.

Potentially, but it depends which Lovie Smith Illinois is getting. Is it the younger, hungry Bears version who took them to the Super Bowl (boosted by really strong talent on defense), or the supposedly more satisfied Lovie from Tampa who lost...a lot? One constant throughout his NFL career was the revolving door at offensive coordinator and inability to have his offenses be an equal to his defenses. Time will tell, as it always does.

Yep...no way recruits would be interested at all in meeting with an ex-NFL coach...they would hate that. No telling how well he will adjust to the college game again if this is all true but it is a slam dunk hire for Illinois.
