Illinois fans blaming refs for ML foul on Austin!

The irony is that if the game situation were reversed and the gophers were on defense you would be arguing that it was a terrible call.
Lol, yeah, maybe, maybe. Nice being on this side, no doubt. The game was played Saturday, today is Monday and I STILL am having trouble accepting that the Gophers won like they did. Could not believe when he drove the lane! Is there some turning point in a season? Was this the Gophers turning point? That play?

I would actually be pissed at our player for even being in the position to foul the guy but that's just me.

I think he was in position to rebound a 3-point miss.

All I'm saying is that almost every foul call is a judgement call by the ref. In this case the contact was minimal, less than in most plays, and appeared to be initiated by the offensive player. The ref would have been justified in not calling it. The people on the board who think it was a foul (it's an understandable position) are describing the play as if Leonard greatly impacted the shot. He didn't. Sometimes they are called. In most cases, they aren't.

Agree. Not the worst call ever and it wouldn't have been a crime if no-call was made. The more interesting aspect for me is how two players could be soooooo monumentally stupid on the same play. Hollins got really lucky Leonard made such a knuckleheaded decision to defend the play. Hollins broke a basketball 101 rule: When down by three and under ten seconds left in the game you always take a three...unless there is a moron under the basket ready to "possibly" foul you. I still can't figure out what Leonard was thinking? Game over if he just gets out of the way.

Hollins of course breaks another basketball 101 rule at the end of overtime but saved himself with the made free-throws. Tubby really needs to explain these things to him-I can't imagine getting that lucky again.

And Leonard had 4 fouls, which in and of itself should have made him dive out of the way of any Gopher with the ball.

Seriously, if you were making a Hollywood movie about basketball and you wanted a dramatic ending, you wouldn't choose what happened at the end of this game because it's TOO boneheaded.

Ah yes. I forgot about that. He could've pulled back and easily ran another 5 seconds off the clock before getting fouled.

What a mix of joy and astonishment this game was.

You're absolutely right, every foul is a judgment call. Every ref crew calls fouls differently. Some refs let you play, some refs call ticky tac garbage. All you can ask is that a crew is consistent so as the game goes on, you know what they are going to call a foul, and what they won't call a foul. As much as I hated the calls they gave Brandon Paul driving to the basket (including the egregious continuation And-1 call), refs were calling that contact on drives as a foul. Watch the ESPN highlight clip posted earlier, there are two And-1's in there that the refs just gave to Paul. So if the refs have clearly been calling that a foul all game, regardless of whether YOU think it was a foul, it doesn't matter, the refs would call that every single time, whether it was the first 5 seconds, or last 5. Illini fans might have an argument if the refs had consistently been letting that contact go all game until that call, but they obviously weren't, so yes, it was a good call for this crew in this particular game.

Illinois fans complain about the call that was made at the Barn. Minnesota fans complained about the call that was NOT made at Illinois. Sounds like a tit-for-tat to me.

If only Austin had a dad who knew something about basketball. Then Tubby wouldn't have to.

Bigs drop their arms and it's called quite often. Not an awful call. Just the timing of it makes it weird, which is stupid if you think about it

Foul or no foul, the ref on the baseline was having none of it. Indicative of how subjective those calls really are. But...I like it!!

Dumb play by Hollins. Dumber by Leonard. Lucky for Gophers. Wasn't a foul, but why even get close to the shooter??? Just stupid play by Illini.

Was half-expecting a shot across your bow from jamalo for that comment, Doc.

I don't think that jamalo has posted on this thread. Are you talking about me?
No, jamalo freaked on Dr. Don for saying he scouts cheerleaders and now calls him Pervy Uncle Don.

It's not this thread, jammer....It is a variety of comments on other threads that he has tried to shoot me in the balls.

Don't worry zambam...in regards to jamalo and his personal attacks on me, I have been called a lot worse things by a lot better people.

This thread gave me a good chuckle. You know how you can tell it was a foul? The guy in stripes blew his whistle.

The insanely bad decision to drive in for a lay-up and the dicey call are part of THE LEGEND OF GOLDEN GOPHER BASKETBALL. Embrace it.
