If this program was in any better shape....

A better Gopher team beat a worse North Dakota State team on a blocked field goal in Mason's last year. I'm with you on the other ones, but I think getting bowl-eligible would have been a challenge for Mason or anyone else in 2007. But again, you can't prove the negative.

NDSU should not be a problem for any Big Ten team no matter where they are rated in their division. I remember a 1 or 2 ranked Illinois State came in when Mason was coaching here and got rolled by about 50 points. I'm not trying to be a big Mason apologist here. I'm just saying Brewster had some help when he came that he completely squandered. Brewster also had a new football stadium and all the excitement that brought in his first season.

Michigan St. A bad team? Best D in the Big Ten and 6th in the Nation.. Congrats in started a stupid thread!

You're totally missing my point. If NDSU successfully kicks a field goal late in the game against us in 2006, they beat us 12-10 instead of losing 10-9. They were better the following season and we weren't as good. Mason probably wouldn't have gotten a win in that game.

I agree with your basic point that a Big 10 team shouldn't lose to an FCS team.

Some of you will stomp your feet and pout at hearing this again, but this team is young. You hate to hear it and you think it's a chickenbleep excuse, but it's a stone cold fact. Take a look at the roster. If you can find me at least 20 Jr.s/Sr.s that you would consider "solid" contributors, I'd love to see your list and rationale.

OK, you have a point there. I think we agree Mason still gets more than 1 or 2 wins in 2007. That's what got me ballistic in my reply to the other post. One thing you can say for the Glen Mason era was his ability to generate wins against lesser non-conference opponents.

One has very little to do with the other. Just because Brewster failed doesn't mean Kill will. Just because you flip a coin and it lands on heads, does not mean it will every time after that.

I don't see any problem with fans being excited about the future. Isn't that what being a fan is all about? I'd rather be hopeful for the future than pessimistic but that's just me.

There's nothing wrong with grounded optimism and just because Brewster failed doesn't mean Kill will, but I've seen some things in the second half of the season that makes me wonder about some of the decisions Kill has made. Like Brewster, he burned a ton of red-shirts that he didn't necessarily have to burn, it appears, for the goal of getting into a low-level bowl. I believe Kill is a better coach than Brewster and his chances of success are better, but that doesn't mean his decisions are the right ones. But again, he's in the driver's seat and seeing I'm a fan, I have to accept that.

MSU is a good team that the Gophers did not match-up well with. Going to a bowl game in year 2 of a new coaching staff is above average for this program. The overriding concern, again, is Kill's health.

Now Michigan St is a good team after they destroyed Minnesota physically. Funny how that works after all sumner and fall this board was all about how Minnesota only lost to MSU last year by 7 and MSU isn't that good this year. All the post about how Minnesota "should" win this game and they matchup weill against the Spartans.

Now everything is totally different.

....it would turn down a bowl game

I remember when Lou Holtz did that at ND and thought "as a coach, you could not possibly be a bigger ego-maniacal prick than to take that away from the seniors, many of whom never got a chance to actually see the field in a bowl game, and will never play another down after they graduate, and lord that over them as a "punishment" for not holding up to your expectations".

worst.post.ever.

....it would turn down a bowl game and focus on next season after such an inept performance against a bad Michigan State team...AT HOME. Instead, the Gophers are going to waste their time preparing for a worthless bowl game and continue to embarass themselves. Downright aweful game today.

Here's my response to this

Do you have examples of the two you quoted saying those things? You do know it could be different people saying those things, right?

I was going to ask if any team ever had turned down a bowl game out of pride, but unfortunately, according to Unregistered User, a team has done that, which, as he said, is a lame thing to do to the seniors, and just kind of dumb because there really isn't a negative to going to the bowl game. Ohio State and Florida, teams that have played for national titles in the last 10 years, still took their 6 or 7 win teams to the Gator Bowl last year, and those programs are on a completely different level than ours. Have you ever seen anyone knock a team for not turning down a bowl bid, much less a team that is frequently finishes toward the bottom of its conference?

Michigan State lost 5 conference games by a total of 13 points. Our closest conference loss was by 8, all of our other conference losses were by more than two touchdowns. Michigan State was ranked top 10 going into the season. We haven't been ranked since 2008. I thought this was a pretty good opportunity for a win, a better one than I thought it was at the beginning of the season, but Michigan State is a better team than we are and a 16 point loss isn't surprising or anything to get really worked up about in my opinion. Their three cross-division games were against Indiana, Wisconsin, and Ohio State, and they beat Wisconsin at Camp Randall. We played Illinois, Wisconsin, and Purdue. They were one game behind us going into this game, with a harder conference schedule, and a non-conference schedule with two ranked teams on it. The win/loss records do not tell the full story, Michigan State is a better team than Minnesota right now.

I'm a little surprised at how down some people are on Gopher football right now, apparently 6 wins in season 2 just isn't enough. It isn't great, but it's certainly not terrible for a program like ours. I guess maybe I'm just too hyped on the basketball team right now after our wins against Stanford and Memphis, and so this loss to Michigan State just isn't bothering me that much.
