How much of an advantage does he have being an alum, Timberwolves coach, Minnesota connections etc. I still have to believe that a current college head coach is the way to go.

He's got to have some sort of relationship with the Big 3 in 2014. He has gone to their games numerous times.

Question 1 in job interview: "how confident are you in reeling in the big 3?"

Answer: "There's a chance."

"You're hired."

Besides getting a guy like Smart or Stevens (which was not realistic), no doubt Flip has the best chance at getting the big 3. Hell, even Alvin Ellis tweeted positively about Flip.

Get 'er done Teague!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I don't see any advantage in hiring Flip. He won't land any of those kids and he has zero recruiting connections. Disaster in the making.

Are you asking if Flip would be considered for the position if he was Mike Fratello? (NBA coach with some success but not here and didn't go to college here)

He wouldn't even be considered. Larry Brown, an NBA coach who has done way more than Flip and done a lot in college basketball got a job at SMU.

That's not a rip on Flip, it's just a fact.

However, it's ignoring Flip's biggest selling points, his connections to local boosters and people assume his connections to local recruits.

Stop making sense.

Biggest drawback to a Flipper hire. Bob's stroke....Grief induced suicide...Self-injurious behavior...

Hang in there Bob. We all love you. :)

Look at my post, I said Flip had those attributes going for him. I came to the realization that Flip would be our coach a few days ago, it's fine. Like I said, I hope I'm wrong.

The fact is that there are ton of misconceptions about the guy on this board, so I'm wondering how much of the NBA many of his supporters actually watch.

But I'm fine if Flip gets hired, I'll cheer for him. I promise I won't start 1 Fire Flip thread in his first 2.5 years (he'll get a fair chance). I WANT to root for the guy, he seems nice and he's a fellow Gopher.

We old guys that were in the student section when Flip was here want one more shot to recapture that old Barn glory. Give this to us and we promise we'll shut up during future coaching searches.

Get out your check books and we'll call it a deal. /youngalum

Can you elaborate on what you or other "expert" Wolves fans think Flip did wrong here? I'm a big Wolves fan and I thought, for the most part, that Flip got the most out of the rosters he was given. The one year he was given a roster that could contend he took it to the Western Conference finals and probably would've won the NBA finals if Sam Cassell didn't get hurt.

Flip has an advantage in that he is a good basketball coach.

Starting with the Musselmen and then Flip, Mychal, Osborne, Ray, Kev. Yes, future NBA coaching and players. Glory days indeed. I can not imagine the Barn any other way. With all my heart I believe Flip gets it done.

The young guys just don't know.

I agree.

That's why I was happy to see Garnett go to Boston, even though it was bad for us. Garnett was never given any real help (except once with Cassell and Spreewell).

Marbury going completely crazy and Brandon's bad ankles didnt help the Wolves cause in those days. Lets also remember Flip went on to coach the Pistons to 3 straight Eastern Conference Finals.

Flip would be a good hire but it will be interesting who he puts on his coaching staff. I dont see many coaches I like better than Flip but he has not been a recruiter and that is a big question. Then again if he takes the job and lands two of the big three and Illkanian all will be right with the world.

You only quote things that other people have said. I never called anyone an "expert".

People didn't like his offense, largely because it was jump shot based. Keep in mind that NBA fans talk about the game a little differently (it's a different game), they talk more in terms of the Advanced Stats, and Flip's offense was based on the long 2. Advanced Stats geeks HATE the long 2 point jump shot. They think he helped to squander the Garnett years by being obsessed with building a team around this concept. Also, most people consider Flip to be part of the braintrust, doubt that Taylor and McHale did anything with the Smith fiasco without Flip being involved (that's just conjecture, but the perception is that Flip was part of that).

They thought he should have been able to do more in KG's prime. He didn't. KG took a lot of that heat (not rising to the occasion), until he won an NBA Championship his first year in Boston.

Most NBA fans aren't patting Flip on the back for his job in Detroit. It's considered to be about like Mike Brown's job with the Lakers (they won a lot, but c'mon).

Hating the long 2 is understandable, it's the least efficient shot in basketball. My argument is his offense was like that because he didn't have much of a choice. The majority of his time here he was given a roster of Kevin Garnett and jumpshooters. After Marbury left, he had players like Terrell Brandon, Wally, Peeler, etc. Those guys weren't known for taking the ball to the basket and creating their own shot. They were jumpshooters.

KG deserved some of the heat while he was here. KG was a once in a lifetime defender and a great all around offensive player, but we all know he lacked a closer's mentality at the end of games. He won a championship in Boston because he was surrounded by Pierce and Allen. KG needed a specific type of teammate to go far in the playoffs. I don't fault Flip for not being able to me more successful when he was given a team of KG and average players.

In Detroit, he basically did everything BUT win the title, and those Pistons teams didn't really have a star. I'm not saying his time in the NBA was perfect, but I think he did a good job. Interesting to hear what other Wolves fans thought.

Question 1 in job interview: "how confident are you in reeling in the big 3?"

Answer: "There's a chance."

"You're hired."

Question 2 -- Have you ever seen a zone defense?
A. Of course.

Question 3 -- Do you have any out of bounds plays?
A. A whole bunch, they involve moving and setting screens to get open.

You're hired. Double bonus.

I almost cried reading that response Bob. Ok, I'm lying, I DID CRY!!! I was so pleased to read and find that you have started to come around.

Ok Bob, and ALL OTHER Flip detractors.

Lets say that Flip had more success in the NBA than he's had?! Then what? Would he then be thinking about a college coaching job?! LOL, no, he'd be coaching in the NBA still.

Instead of focusing on supposed negatives, which Bob thinks ARE negatives, and I believe are only perceived to be negatives, lets focus on the postives.

How many schools have a realistic shot at getting a coach who has over a dozen years of NBA coaching experience, and who was TWICE, with TWO DIFFERENT TEAMS, made the Coach of the All-Star team and who has TWO CBA Titles with different teams.

Colleges don't consider coaches with resumes like Flips, because guys with resumes like Flips normally would NEVER consider taking a college bb coaching job.
