Maturi's entire Brewster firing press conference was a joke. "Football is the engine" "We will stretch (financially) to get the right guy" "Hoping for a Tubby Smith type hire" even acknowledging that having 300 minor sports might not be the right model.

He then compounds this by making a statement like being "surprised Coach X was interested in the job" and the continuous "lots of interest" comments. Finally, how in the HELL does the University come up with a plan to announce the new coach via FB and Twitter if there is even a slight possiblity that they will have to go this far down the list?

The "U" aggravates a number of boosters and former players by keeping them out of the search (which I thought was the right move) because of the sensitivity of going after sitting head coaches...and they come up with this?

Last time Charlie Strong was a "finalist" and Lane Kiffin got an interview. With MORE time and (allegedly) more money to spend, the Gophers end up with a less impressive group of candidates to choose from?

Edit: If these rumors are a ploy to get the fanbase more excited when the actual coach is announced, then it's F'ing brilliant.

Wow, just wow.

Did you really, really believe a big name HC would come to Minnesota?

Its happened before. Glen Mason was a coup at the time, and so was Holtz. But, sadly no.

Absolutely. Why are you so down on Minnesota? Minneapolis is a top 15-20 media market, the school has virtually every major a recruit could be interested in, a brand new stadium, and good facilities. I don't understand this inferiority complex that some have in regards to the school. I guess we can argue over who would constitute a big name hire, but that's not the point of my post.

Considering a brand new stadium, an ability to pay top 20 compensation package with the Big 10 Revenue, yes I did think they could hire a quality head coach. If all of the lead candidates discussed over the past three weeks said no, then Maturi was not the right person to conduct this search and SELL the job. Unfortunately, it is too late now and we will be locked in to 4 more years of mediocrity with a half empty stadium.

Big name coaches will not settle for a Minnesota type program. Nor does Minnesota have the resources to get it done. Do you think Harbaugh, Patterson, Belotti, etc. would go to IU? Or Colorado? Miami? Maybe.

I did. I still do, but I don't think Maturi has the personality to sell the job the right way. Which is why I was hoping he'd get the ax instead of Brewster.

Jerry "Buzz" Kill and Paul Chryst "we suck" ?? We could have done a LOT better.

At worst we could have had Shannon and/or Fulmer. Either would have been preferable to Kill, IMO. If we chose Chryst over them, I have no words.

x2

there's such a scandinavian inferiority-complex in this state it's embarrassing.

minnesota should be able to attract a hungry, tier 1 coach looking to prove himself in an elite conference. our division is completely winnable.

if we end up with a kill-type hire it will reflect more on the ineptitude of the administration than the potential of the program.

I'm on board with EG, Howeda and Charles...support Kill or Chryst if hired as Coach of our Gophers. Save your criticism for Dithering Joel. The U of M deserves everything they have coming to them in vocal non-support of this hire by allowing the same a$$clown that hired Brewster to make this decision as well. I just refuse to believe that these two were the best of the talent pool we had to select from. Leach was the ONLY hire IMHO if you really wanted to infuse excitement and hope into our program and fan base and we didn't have the nuts to do it. Checkered past with Leach? Maybe...but that would also be an indictment on Maturi's potential inability to manage and control his employees. Now just continue to let our once proud Men's Hockey to wallow into the depths of Hell and your legacy will be complete, Joel.
